The more common cutie marks can be interpreted to work for an array of talents. It's like having a cutie mark in medicine, but having a specialized skill for brain surgery or psychology. If you're especially skilled in your specialization, that will be your cutie mark, but if you're just generally skilled in thing and specialize later, you'll have the generic mark.
An hourglass would relate with time, which could be applied to scheduling/clerk jobs, watchmaking, etc. I don't remember if Minuette said what her job was in Amending Fences.
