I was seriously worried about that episode based on the teaser, but it wasn't an extra dumb retread of "Applebuck Season". IMO it's one of the least crappy AJ-centered episodes.

Applejack's Day Off.
The episode had potential; but it was all squandered. Applejack being unable to relax and stop working, Twilight and Spike struggling with Applejack's silly chores, and Rainbow Dash being embarrassed to be seen at the spa were all amusing concepts; but they were barely used while in the middle of the episode they spent five minutes on Applejack following some pipes and fixing them which is probably the most boring sequence I've ever seen on MLP and it killed the pacing of the whole episode.
Overall though I've been pleased with the season. We've had more good episodes then bad ones and one truly great episode (Saddle Row).

Yeah, I think the problem was that the dude writing it didn't really know what to do with Apple horse and he was tasked with writing an Apple horse episode.
So you've got a funny bit at the start with rarity and some funny concepts with Twilight and Rainbow; but then the episode forces itself to focus on Applejack because its supposed to be her episode and all the writer could think for her to do was fix some damned pipes and he dragged that out into five minutes of nothing.
If he'd focused on Applejack inventing one chore after another to avoid actually relaxing then it could have been funny; but instead he just stretched one out ad naseum.
Like I said, a lot of wasted opportunity.
At least one good thing came out of the episode, and that's Handy Applejack.

When I see the lack of humor and the terrible pacing of it, I think Neil Dusedau.
This look like a production chain failure.
Kind of like if Neil Dusedau started the writing, then got fired or quit his job.
And the two other writers (the Fox brothers) were trying to salvage it at the last minute.
3 God damn writers! 3!
And the episode is full of some of the worst forced dialogues I've ever eared (often well bellow fanfiction writing), and it felt terribly empty.

Dude does not have a winning record.
Interestingly he co wrote Princess Spike same as he did Applejack's day off, another episode that had its moments; but squandered its potential.
While the only episode he wrote solo "What About Discord" is probably the most conceptually flawed and unsalvageable episode of My Little Pony.

What about Discord is absolutely terrible.
Making an episode about a joke that nobody could understand is a terrible idea if nothing is there to make legitimate humor out of it.
The only thing this episode is succeeding, is making the viewer as uncomfortable and confused as Twilight.
I've never been so bored watching an MLP episode.
And as usual, it contrast greatly with the other episodes in style, and substance.

If she was being forced on us as being part of the mane six (7) I'd agree with you; but they haven't done that.
She's more like Spike, a foil for Twilight to play off of and without the writers doing something radical like taking away Twilight's magic they need a foil to play Twilight off of at this point since she's already overcome most of her own character faults.
For an example Look at Amending Fences last season, best Twilight episode I've seen since they gave her wings and they accomplished it by giving her Moondancer as a foil.

I loved her as a villain, and although her redemption was unsurprisingly shoddy like all MLP redemptions, I found her new character to be just as interesting. I'm glad that they didn't just do a Sunset V2 by having her mope about how evil she was and being a social pariah. I will agree that sometimes they did have a bit of that guilt complex shoved in, but the internal conflicts and lessons Starlight has faced have been different to Sunset.
However, while I understand that she is partially meant to be a student gimmick for Twilight, I do hope that we get some GlimGlam episodes without Twilight.

Having a friend for once, valuing that and realizing that if he wants to keep his friend he might need to tone down the chaos a little. I'd also point out that he's still not particularly reformed considering his attempt to take over Equestria with Tirek (another learning experience for him) and his actions at the Grand Galloping Galla with Tree Hugger and the Smooze.

Well for one since she was screwing around with time Twilight, Spike and her are the only ones with any memory of what she did. Same goes for her cult village since only the Mane 6 witnessed that and Twilight convinced them to forgive her.
So any bad reputation she might have in Ponyville is entirely from secondhand accounts and she has the fucking Princess of Friendship vouching for her. It doesn't seem like a stretch to me.

Well Trixie went nuts and took over Ponyville, so she's in no place to judge and can actually relate which is part of why they became friends.
As for Sunburst, they were childhood friends so he's inclined to forgive her and since she also told him that part of the reason she went nuts is because she lost him as a friend he probably felt a little guilty and was thus more inclined to forgive her.

Acording to numbers on derpibooru this is actually true. If you're searching for explicit pictures then flutterdash is the least lewd ship of all the mane6 on mane6 ships that involve Fluttershy or Rainbow Dash. It's really close though, it just gets by with less than half a percent difference. The lewdest ship goes to Fluttershy and Applejack.
That being said if you like explicit there's still a lot out there. I actually prefer the cuter stuff myself anyways. I think it really fits them well, being more close and intimate rather than just hardcore sex.
