I prefer Lopoddity's OCs to be honest. Yeah, some of the pairings that spawn the next generation OCs don't entirely make sense to me, but she does a damn good job of getting me invested in and making me care about them.
Meanwhile Kilala's OCs... look nice. There's a story with them, but we don't see much of it. I haven't become as invested in her characters as I have Lop's.

I think it might be because I discovered Lop first, honestly.
So when I discovered Kilala, I ended up making comparisons, and that probably didn't help me when I tried getting invested with Kilala's characters. I mean, I like her characters, but I like Lop's more, is all.
I will say one thing, though;retroactively making Prima Donna a trans-filly seems kind of... weird, I guess. Good for Sweetie Belle for being a loving, supportive parent, but eh... was there really a point to it, when there's magic available that just changes a pony's gender no problem?

I think it's one of those "She still young, so no magical starry mane yet" sort of things. That, and she is stated to not really care about her princessly duties at that point, since she basically has none to speak of.
So she's not so hung up on her looks, and the scraggly "new" look is the result.But yeah... she could use some blue in her design again; with nothing but shades of gray for everywhere save the eyes, her design's gotten a lot more boring.

Honestly, while I prefer the designs of Lopoddity's NextGen OCs, in terms of relationships, background, and whatnot, I prefer Ki's characters. Both sets of NextGen's have terrible pasts, or issues they try and work though, but with Kilala's OCs, that's the thing; there's a payoff, a resolution. Issues are worked through, and if they're not truly solved, they're addressed and worked on.
With Lopoddity's characters, there's too much pathos; the issues are presented, but there's no end to the problem in sight for them. They might live happy lives eventually, but those issues will continue to be a defining factor for them, and will continue to rule them.
Every time I see pictures depicting Pandora struggling with her feelings of inadequacy, or whatever issues she seems to be wrestling with at the moment, because of the SHEER VOLUME of those moments for her, that are depicted or implied, I can't help but think "FUCKING TALK IT OUT WITH YOUR MOTHER YOU DAMN NOODLE CAT".

It also falls flat because, as "progressive" as they made Bel Canto/Prima Donna, because of who the characters are, and the world they live in, they have EASY ACCESS to the magic, or someone who knows the magic to change one's Gender, temporarily or otherwise.
Hell, it was how Rarity and AJ's lesbian lovespawn was conceived; they went to Discord, and he Zaps Rarity so she's a stallion for the night of conception and BOOM, you got Magnolia May.
So when it is THAT EASY to change a character's gender, temporarily or otherwise, there's nothing progressive about it.
