When a pony does die around them, they assume the pony is asleep until they start to rot.

You can do it with anything that isn't oxygen, but if you use the wrong one, your death will be extremely agonizing. I think nitrogen won't make you suffer.
Another option is the classic carbon monoxide. They've started putting oxygen in gas so the classic car method isn't such a good idea. You could try lighting a charcoal grill in a small enclosed space and OD'ing on sleeping pills.
