I've been wrapping my head around this episode but I think I finally realize why I have such and issue with it.
It's Fluttershy's brother and how he's handled.
He's this overconfident outgoing piece of shit that you're supposed to be annoyed by but at the same time we're supposed to believe that he's actually full of doubt and afraid of failure.
But we've seen him trying to get on with Dash and failing several times. Failing doesn't even seem to register with him. His character isn't one that exudes self doubt but rather someone who is afraid of commitment.
I'm not saying people who are as outgoing as he is can't be doubtful but I sure as hell wouldn't have made this character putting more effort into getting out of work if I wanted to show he was afraid of failure.
Also the ending annoyed me since I've had a similar experience. I've been told to "JUST TRY" in something I'm passionate about and I have finished and graduated only being stuck right back where I started and the ending of the episode plays it off as a joke.

Its bad enough that you skip how hard getting through college and keeping your passion in your heart with a "Oh he graduated in one day". But the ending showed that even with all his confidence AND after he tried his hardest he STILL needed help making it just like I do. But the episode just ends there.
I don't even know if this is valid critique or not and maybe I'm just nitpicking but this episode felt like it was supposed to hit home for me but instead it just missed, over simplified or even ignored the worst parts of being like Zephyr.
It was still a 8/10 episode.

Nah Zephyr as a character was fine. He's complex and has a lot more going for him than what's on the surface. I'd just buy more that with his mane styling passion that he'd rather not conform to others instead of just being outright scared of failing. He didn't seem to care about failing especially if it got him out of work.

And yeah, I feel like the "just do it" thing at the end was a bit weak. It could have been handled much worse but it was weak. Maybe it would have been better if he his resolution wasn't that he graduated and did it "all on his own" but that he came home with a failed wig but wasn't bothered by the failure and was determined to do better on the next one or asked for a redo or something and was confident he could fix it.
He said he was scared of failure, right? The ending should have been him no longer afraid of failure, not finding out he can't fail as long as he tries. Because sometimes we do just fail.
