I think Dash comes off as one of the arrogant, alpha, or macho types that are the natural antagonist or the natural point of aspiration of your average horsefucker.
Even if they're well-adjusted, nobody likes a braggart. People who like Dash are capable of looking through her antics and saying, 'at heart, here is a good person'. People who don't are those who see it as a brick wall of being a cunt who gave them a hard time in high-school; hence the top cunt nomer.
DashFAGS are people who tend to aspire to be like Dash, or lust after her. Given that a vast majority of the fandom are mostly introverted, the voracious bravery and confidence to 'do what I want' is very, very attractive to us, particularly if you're a guy. Guys generally want to gravitate to aspirations of physical fitness, and girls typically do not, so there's the 'exotic' factor in there, too. She also shares interests with Dashfags.
However, as you grow older, you acquire more confidence (you're more certain of who you are), and you don't feel the need to showboat, or admire such showboating. Cognitive dissonance would maintain that, as we see showboating of someone who's insecure and 'young and stupid', we would not wish to aspire to be someone or be with someone who showboats.
Hence, it makes complete sense that Dashfags are typified as immature (mentally), loud, and arrogant, and they have strong convictions over their waifu. They also see Rarafags as natural antagonists; primarily because Rarity probably represents the opposite end of the spectrum for girls - dainty, 'beautiful', socially minded - the kind of girls who might criticise insecurities, laugh at bravery, or snub a dashfag's advances.

Interesting, I was the same and found her reminiscent of a cute tomboyish field hockey player beloved by all, and lusted after by an almost equal number. Then again, I always thought that a good number of Dash's moments of 'arrogance' come off as very, very deadpan self-deprecating jokes, probably because this girl made a lot of jokes like that using similar wording, and was like Dash in a lot of other ways, which made me basically use her personality to fill in any gaps in Dash's characterization.

Right, but let me hone you back in on my second point, which is that maturity varies so much in that age group in particular.
Eighteen is different to nineteen is different to twenty and so forth. So if we got an average of Dashfags being eighteen and nineteen, it tells us something different to Rarity fags being twenty-one and twenty-two. My hypothesis is that Rainbow Dash fans are among the youngest we have, on average.
Regarding maturity being a relevant point; I think by 23 most people are about 70% of the person they end up being. At 18, I'd say it's less than 20. I'm sure I could run an overall % difference from my aforementioned survey for girls aged 18 and 21, but I don't have the data any more, and it wouldn't tell us much anyway.
What else should be asked to give a greater idea of what strain of people fit into which horse? I think real age might help.
