You're very clearly aware that the issue is with the owners of the dogs and not with the dogs themselves, at least on some level. The same asshole could do the exact same thing with a German Shepard or a Boxer or million other different breeds, mixes, and variations of mutts.
Yes, compared to a lot of dogs Pitbulls tend to be a bit stronger and a bit tougher, that's why people use them as guard dogs and that's why people sometimes make them fight. That being said they aren't any meaner or more aggressive than any other dog is, they just do more damage when shitheads train them to be violent.
From my own, admittedly anecdotal, evidence I've never met a pitbull that wasn't an absolute sweetheart that didn't melt the moment I put my hands on them and started rubbing.
Personally, I assume that every animal I meet is potentially dangerous until I can prove otherwise. In that regard different breeds and sub-classifications are irrelevant.

You are correct, but there's a cultural thing with them as well. The guy who is trying to show what a badass he is chooses a pitbull. The drug dealer who doesn't want anyone fucking with him chooses a pitty. The guy who doesn't trust his neighbors won't break into his house and steal his shit gets a pitbull. It's a status breed among low lives and criminals.
I'll agree most of the pitties I've met have been absolute sweethearts. But more than any other breed their owners tend to be sketch.
