ITT: reading, reviewing, wasting time on stupid shit, SSnE realises he can't keep up the Austraeoh game for much longer, writing an AU story that isn't garbage from the get-go, sex as an expression of love rather than fodder for one-shot clopfics, it's alright to write hardcore explicit fetish stories with minors as long as they aren't fully human, site bugs, torturing human beings for the sake of pony stories, the intricacies of Equestria's monetary system, inside jokes so obscure that nobody gets them, people unironically defending Bleedin, Voiceguy gets one year closer to his demise, remember that liking things is wrong, there's no getting off knighty's FiMFiction ride, writing papers about a fictional universe, revelling in our autism, and what's the deal with Anthro stories?

Feeling hollow after having a wet dream with your fanfic waifu? Looking for a fic to distract you from the misaligned pic antext in the OP? Well, we've compiled the best of the worst in order to bring you our absolute average!

>It was an extravagant day in Ponyville. No pony would ever hear the dust roll to the side. Nor the sound of a wheel spinning like some kind of locomotive creature. Pinkie Pie was currently sitting in the dirt near Sugar Cube Corner because she was waiting for Mr. Cake to open up. It seemed he forgot to let her in and she had to wait all night for him.

>"Oh my pink posterior, why did Mr. Cake let me sleep outside in the dirt", cried Pinkie Pie in a angry state. Then, from afar, something glorious was rolling through. It was DAT BOI, and he was rolling on his unicycle like a boss. Pinkie Pie shuddered at the very sight of DAT BOI's very existence. It was impossible to avoid, to the point where she started screaming. Suddenly, wheels grew out of her hind hooves and outstretched into the ground, perfectly balanced. Pinkie Pie's skull and limbs were morphing into that of a frogs, and she could only scream in the agonizing pain from the transformation. Then, she started rolling with DAT BOI, to which she owed to her new existence.

>"OH SHIT WADDUP" said Pinkie Pie as she road with her new two-part posse.

You can buy a surplus 4 year old desktop and monitor from a college for like 50 bucks these days. You could always go to a library to write. So long as you aren't looking at horse porn, I doubt anyone would be able to tell horsefiction writing from essay writing.

The only current symbol is a EoH style pin, and since Phoenix was kind of extremely secret and not a publicly known organization, I doubt its agents would just walk around wearing a horseshoe.

Unless I make an arc for some kind of old agents trying to bring back the original Phoenix, using the escaped Ponka as an information source about Twilight and such.
>>
>>27432669
The idea behind Phoenix was agents operating in duos of unicorns and earth ponies. The unicorn used, well, magic, and the earth ponies provided more brute force to back up their partners. Since combat magic to the level they used before is pretty exhausting in the fic, and unicorns are portrayed as having weaker constitution that earth ponies, the latter still have a role in the fight.

>007 gadgets

The fic is in a 1915-20 era, no way those are getting in.

Okay so first your description is full of red flags (and since it's rated mature/sex, less people will even see it).

What do people see when they look at your story on the front page?
- "Orifice: The Musical", a title that tells you nothing of what the story is about, except that it could be clop
- 7 tags including Dark, that is not okay. Is it a dark, comedic musical with sex that is also a random aventure and a mystery? What does that even mean?
- "A unnofficial story inspired by Penis: The Musical by WrathofGod519". This is not going to encourage me to read that story, if anything it tells me that unless I've read the "penis musical" thing first, this story is not for me.

Overall, I would not click on this. It sounds terrible.

Fucktons.
>>
>>27436440
Probably something related to thaumaturgy.
Thaumic units? I'unno.
>>
>>27436440
No. Magic is rather poorly understood, especially in comparison to what you find in physics.

Magic in FiM is pretty obscure and hard to grasp, in a lot of ways. Sure, one third of the population are capable of what seems to mostly amount to telekinesis, but the further you get away from that the less secure things get. There's magic that you study at universities, but there's also magic in emotions, in friendship, in natural spirits, in concepts, in words and in fate. It can affect everything from moving stuff, transmutation, to altering time. It's far from rare to see some new kind of magic, or some new aspect of known magic. Even Twilight, who is a scholar and a prodigy, often seems stumped by magic she hasn't seen or doesn't immediately understand. It doesn't feel right to me to treat it like it's fully understood and can be understood by concepts like the Joule. If you want a system, make it interpretation.

They'll certainly have terms for various things in the magical arts, but comparing it to what we find in our physics doesn't seem fruitful.
Which is fine by me. The idea of magic being a physics/math-"equivalent" has generally to me seemed like it has been missing the point of why a story would have magic in the first place. Maybe something trying to interpret magic through something akin to classical formal logics would be fun, but I just have a soft spot for that. It's definitely among the ideas I have for a fic I will never write.
>>
>>27437309
Maybe as something on the same level as quantum physics? The ponies have several theories about them, but have yet any way to prove them, similar to how Greeks, Dalton and finally Rutherford saw atoms, but only Rutherford could prove some of the precise contexts. Like;

Starswirl: Total magical energy = biggest mass in kilograms you can lift with a basic telekinesis spell.

Twilight/Starlight: Magical energy = Mo (Moonlight's constant) x m (body mass of the unicorn)/ 1/20th of his age, but no way to get into details factoring in extremely old magic masters or the foalhood magic burst.

Some random guy 500 years later: Magic is extremely fluctuating depending on the different type of ponies, constitution, interests, mental problems, health problems, etc. Different unicorns have different specializations, and will have the most magic in those sectors. Foalhood magical burst is caused by the brain building itself and not knowing how to limit its magic output, hence ridiculously powerful magic for their age.

This overload can lead to rapid exhaustion, which explains why foals sleep around 20 hours up until their brain sets priorities, which is around 14 months.

(Attached is 25GB worth of graphs to calculate magical capacity)
>>
>>27436440
Unics

It functions as both a contraction of unicorn and it's a portmanteau of unicorn and unit.

The contraction of unics is UNX or unx, and 1 unic would be 1 standard Unicorn on the Unics scale. A pony rated at 1 unic is able to levitate and manipulate standard objects that earth ponies can use with hoof. A pony able to lift more than one object at a time, or large, heavy objects objects, or one that is able to operate complex multiple-component objects or devices, for example, would score higher on the unic scale as the magical power required for such feats is naturally higher.

Rarity for example is rated at 2.1 unics; she can create complex weaves and manipulate multiple objects at a time in order to create her fashionable garbs, and has demonstrated the ability to lift heavy rocks, but her magical power is still very limited. Twilight would be rated at around 34 unics, if the scale went that high.
>>
>>27437478
I was thinking as an unit for magic based machines to use, as, like >>27437309 said, using a common energy unity for ponies' magical potential would be like considering IQ the universal measure for intelligence, discarding any other type of skills.
>>

OK so then unics can function like watt hours.

So in this instance, 1 unic is the amount of magical energy required to levitate a kilogram weight, for one hour.
>>
>>27437582
Magical machines, not ponies.

I think I'll stick to watts or something like that.
>>
I'd read a fic where Starswirl tries to come up with a logical system for measuring magical output.

>>

Did you even read the post?

A watt is a derived unit of energy, specifically used for measuring electricital outpout or consumption.

A unic then is a derived measurement of magical output or consumption.
>>
>>27437650
>So in this instance, 1 unic is the amount of magical energy required to levitate a kilogram weight, for one hour.

Which is done by a pony, not a machine.
>>
>>27437659
So just use the unic to apply to machines instead of ponies, fuck.

It's like calories vs watts vs joules vs barrels vs TNT etc. They are all units of energy meant to express different things in context. Pony magical output could be called the lev unit. Go creatively wild, you fucking faggot.

Zebraforce

It sounds counterintuitive, but makes perfect sense. Zebras have almost no magic, so unicorns can measure their strength in whole numbers (e.g. "119 Zebraforce") rather than decimals (e.g. "0.595 Unic").

I thought it was going to be for political correctness.

>They can't even into magic
>But else it's racism!
>Why the fuck are you even...
>Fucking get banished to Tartarus, racist princess scum! Destroy the monarchy!
>>
Thinking about political correctness and that thing with Starlight's friend, I had an idea for a fic.

A male, bright colored skillful unicorn tries to get into CSGU. Unfortunately, all unskilled female zebras and donkeys are being favorized over him. Can he get in school?
>>

>>

>>
>>27437907

It's a pretty stupid idea, no lie.

If you want to do something that's "stupid comedy" but could still be fit into an Equestria-centered story, maybe make him a Blueblood-level asshole-idiot who thinks that everyone is "oppressing" him because of his noble unicorn heritage. "Oh, you simple mudponies can't possibly understand the burden of being genetically enlightened," etc.

Then just let everypony react appropriately while he keeps digging himself deeper in. Boom, comedy.

I've been fooling around with a unit called a Swirl that would be a measure of magic. Since in my equations the amount of magic in a spell would be a function of both energy expended and entropy altered/information transmitted, I'd define the Swirl to be something like the magic needed to apply 1N of force to a cube of dimensions 0.1mx0.1mx0.1m located 1m away.

Whether or not this makes sense thematically in-universe is another question, of course, but do whatever you want to make your fic work.

Has any of you written a whole fic based on a song? Is that a thing?
>>
>>27446479
No, just that we listen to those while writing.
>>
>>27446479
I know Regidar did that. Couldn't say if he still does.

I've always wanted to write a whole story based on Rubber Soul.
>>
>>27446479
Sure, it's a thing. Personally, if I saw a story based off a song, or an album, I'm normally turned away unless that song or album has some significance to me. And that might not even be a good thing. If I see someone writing a story based off an album like Hunky Dory, Pink Moon, or something that I have a more sentimental attachment to, like Big Generator, I'm probably going to read it to see how the story gets it all wrong. An exaggeration, but you get my point. It's a bit like if someone wrote a crossover with another franchise or series that you care a lot about. You're either going to be very pleased, or easily let down.

The best ideas is probably just to treat it like any other kind of inspiration, and either just use it as a staging point for a freer story or to just take the ideas you find provoked by the song and use them in something where it seems to fit. But I dunno, do whatever.

I have or had notes that mention:
The Idol by Procol Harum.
Several songs from The Poison Boyfriend album by Momus.
Janelle Monáe's Metropolis series, though that's sort of cheating.
Some filk.
Some songs by Listener.
And more.

I mean, I'm probably not ever going to write any of these. But it means that at some point, probably while listening to the songs I got an idea for a story, a character or a plotpoint. And maybe I'm going to use some of that later, in some way.

>>27446537
Why not? Do it.

Has anyone read Regidar's Merriweather Post Pavilion fic? Is it any good?

Might be better to treat the album as a entity in itself rather than as a collection of songs. When you'd write a story inspired by a movie, you focus on the themes, ideas and emotion the motion give you, not on interpreting every scene.
But I guess it depends on how close you want to stay to the source. And I do get why you wouldn't want to leave anything out.

Not that I have a lot to say about the matter, you're way more productive than me in terms of horsewords. My opinions sadly aren't as qualified as I'd like them to be.

>>27447928
That would probably be for the better. I get that you want to make sure that we know he's big, but we don't need it forced upon us.
Also, and this might be a personal thing, but when you mention a specific height in some measurement, and keep bringing it up, it gets even weirder. When you just say that's he's "tall" or "huge" all the time, I just get the odd instance that he's of immense statute. But when you specify and repeat an amount, it seems like it's important that exactly that size. Does that make sense?

Might read a chapter or two and do some notes tomorrow.
>>
>>27448022

I've read it too, but it seems he isn't that balanced, especially with his original author's note about his work being a "parable of truth". It seems he was just showing the good sides of not aborting, not taking in account the fact that the mare was raped and didn't even want to keep the baby
>>

Yeah, and those things, ironically, always seem to ignore the kid's position.
Even if the kid is never told about being a rapechild, the fact will always hang over his and the mother's head-- being rapted is a traumatic experience, and it'd take the woman years to not see the rape every time she sees her own child.

How much do you want to bet that you post more words on 4chan everyday?
>>
>>27452668
Yeah, 2000 a day is beyond nanowrimo tier (1667/day)
>>
>>27452668
You're not gonna become a bodybuilder overnight. The kind of people who write thousand of words per day do so out of long-form habits.

The key is to be consistent and diligent. Say you manage to write two hundred words one day, the following day force yourself to write at least another two hundred, even if it's painful. The following day do the same and keep going until you're used to do that , and then aim for more. four hundred, five hundred. keep going for as long as it takes until you progressively can become more constant in your writing.
>>
>>27452681
I don't. I mostly lurk. I've been wanting to write a green for a couple of weeks now(as well as finish the long overdo chapter) but just can't manage to write it. I have it all in my head but I just cant get it into words.

>I have it all in my head but I just cant get it into words.
I know the struggle.
The only advice I can give you is to pour out everything you have into the page, just write out whatever comes to your mind, however it comes.
It's easier to edit/rewrite what's already there than to stare at a blank page.
>>
>>27452742
Just sit down, close your browser, get rid of distractions, put on some >>27446449 or whatever, and spend an hour on it. The idea is you're going to devote an hour to it, and not let yourself stray for that time. It's not about word counts, just put the time in and write.
>>

JUST
DO IT
>>27453106
>It's nt wordcounts
One can do a lot of nothing in an hour. A whole hour, for example.
Time is important, yes, but wordcounts should have a higher priority.

Reminder that twilight would want you to read classical literature and studies to improve your mind rather than just brain rotting fan fiction.
>>
>>27456392

Twilight reads Daring Do unironically, and they're written at a level that Dash- a girl who clearly hasn't read any non-homework fiction in at least a decade- can pick it up and enjoy it with no problems. So no, I don't think she has any problem with you reading pop writing instead of "classical literature."
>>
>>27456533
Nope, she read them to support her friend. Do you really think a actual genius would read shit like that? Even then the writing must be compelling, its basically a biographical novel which she reads a lot of, explaining why she would read it even through it masquerades as a pop book.

One more quick point, fanfiction would be no where never the level of quality of a experienced author writing about her life.

My point being, a certain purple pony thinks you are a faggot.

>Nope, she read them to support her friend.

DYEWTS?

>its basically a biographical novel which she reads a lot of, explaining why she would read it even through it masquerades as a pop book

You realize you're describing stuff like Smile and Diary of a Wimpy Kid as much as Daring Do, right? Unless you consider stuff like that "compelling" by definition, I see no reason to assume that Do isn't written at the same level as any typical children's/young adult series

>fanfiction would be no where never the level of quality of a experienced author writing about her life

I don't know whether you have a depressingly low opinion of fanfiction, a charmingly naive view of the quality of published fiction, or both.

>a certain purple pony thinks you are a faggot

Yeah, probably... but I'm sure she can come up with plenty of things more faggy about me than my taste in writing
>>
>>27456648
Twiley reads anything she likes and she likes Daring Do. She isn't 100% nerd like Moon Dancer
>>

>DYEWTS?
Yah

>no reason to assume that Do isn't written at the same level as any typical children's/young adult series
Twilight reads it, again she is a very experienced reader so it is safe to assume the book is written far better than your average fan fiction

>I don't know whether you have a depressingly low opinion of fanfiction, a charmingly naive view of the quality of published fiction, or both.
I have a very low option of both, but if I had to read either a random book or a random fan fiction I'd certainly pick a random book.

>Yeah, probably... but I'm sure she can come up with plenty of things more faggy about me than my taste in writing
I am certain of it

Okay, someone explain this to me. What the hell is a "frontal moon?" Is it just... being naked, from the front?
>>
>>27457632
The joke is "Full Frontal" not "Frontal Moon"
As in "full frontal nudity".

Anyway, it's anthro so just ignore it.
>>
>>27456648
>Nope, she read them to support her friend.

From the wikia:

Rainbow Dash: What's this? 'Daring Do and the Quest for the Sapphire Stone'.
Twilight Sparkle: This is the first story in the series. I own all of them. [squee]
Rainbow Dash: No thanks. I so don't read. I'm a world-class athlete. Reading's for eggheads like you, Twilight.

Canonically, Twilight was already a fan of the Daring Do series well before Dash had her accident.

Fuck your standards, I do what I want.

This is my 4th grade highschool writing exam all over again. Culture and entertainment was the subject. At least my old classmates had the ability to grasp that both could be mixed together and both were not exclusive of the other.

The Celestia Code is now available as a Hardcover book on Lulu (http://www.lulu.com/shop/iisaw/the-celestia-code/hardcover/product-22714358.html).

I didn't realize that there were websites where you could put a fanfic up and people could order a copy at any time, unlike those one-time print runs that I see every so often (Past Sins, Pirene, FO:E). Are there any other fics available like this? Now that I finally have money I might go back and buy some.

Hey, that's a pretty neat site then. I've never heard of it before
>>
>>27462271
Yeah, I suppose it's like when /mlp/ put up those Daring Do books they wrote. It'd be nice to see more fanfics available since I need to decorate my room and posters/prints are too mainstream for my autism.
