Some people hate it, some people love it, but most people seem to agree that the songs were pretty good.
So which was your favourite?

Gotta go with Pinkie here. It just feel's so natural for her character to break into song like that. Definitely the most in-character tune.

Honestly I thought it was one of her best song to date, the instrumentals were fantastic (still trying to figure what the style is called) and Libman's enthusiasm was at the most I'd ever heard, the part where she's standing on the pile of presents and sings the chorus solidified it as the best song for me.

>Taking a good song and remixing it into some shitty fucking techno beat
Why does everyone do this?
>>
>>27364167
I'll never understand why the majority of MLP remixes are metal, techno, or some variety of dubstep. It's the polar opposite of the show's tone and the two usually don't mix well at all. There are a ton of other musical styles they'd sound fine in.
>>
>>27364206
>be autistic teenager
>enjoy two different things
>"oh boy, what if there was a crossover? XD"
bla bla bla undertale, GF, touhou, MLP, SU etc etc, its not hard to see where this is going
>>
Luna's new singer VA is the fucking bomb. Great that they got rid of making her singing sound like Rarity.
>>
>>27364206
EDM is easy to make, so everyone does it. Also nerds like metal, so everyone does that too. And you can't tell me you've never jammed to any remixes of pone songs.
>>
>>27364231

Yeah im actually a giant Rarifag I love her singing voice but it was fucking jarring when Luna started singing in the S4 finale... and sounded exactly like Rarity.
>>
>>27364218
That's just a complaint about the concept of remixes, it doesn't explain why nearly all of them fall into the same 2-3 categories. You'd think there'd be enough fans of non-electronic music among MLP's audience that we'd hear more variety. I mean, if you like the show's musical numbers, why wouldn't you be looking for something with a sound closer to them?

>>27364238
I can't say I've gotten into any remixes of the show's songs. There are electronic fan songs I like here and there, but as the stuff from the show goes, I prefer the originals or instrumentals.
>>
>>27364135
jesus christ, fucking ruined.

EDM is DEAD, get the fuck over it
>>
>>27364272
> I mean, if you like the show's musical numbers, why wouldn't you be looking for something with a sound closer to them?
That's because doing a non-electronic song is infinitely harder than making a dance beat, and nobody bothers trying to go for show style because we already have show style songs...in the ACTUAL SHOW.

Also, I don't think the demand for different styles is as big as you make it out to be. EDM is pretty popular in this fandom...it'd say those who don't like it are in the minority.
>>
>>27364272
most of the fans are teens and adults on their 20s, of course they would be more into electronic and metal stuff, i mean when was the last time you saw an orchestral remix?
>>
>>27364327

Iv seen some pretty damn nice Rarity Investigates inspired Jazzy remixes.

>realize the song is even better than you rememberd
feels good man
>>
>>27364361
Funny, that's basically how I felt, I guess you really don't appreciate something until you see it twice.
>>
>>27364323
I can see there's a demand for EDM, the confusing part is how such a strong demand exists when the community producing it is based around something completely different.

>>27364327
Not long ago, actually.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FKA7QzIUns
You can sort of tell the instruments are synthesized, but at least it's focusing on the tone of the original song instead of trying to turn it into dance music.

Is it sad that I actually found the story-world background and pony design vastly more interesting than the pretty generic modern settings we've been getting in the show lately?
>>
>>27364652
To be fair there seems to have been a lot more effort put into the visuals in this episode than a lot of the other ones, but yeah, the victorian setting really does seem to lend itself well to the show.

They really should have aired it closer to winter, this would be a fantastic December episode

1. Say Goodbye to the Holidays
Glimmer has very beautiful voice for singing, maybe Im just too excited because I was amazed of how well she did on her first song
2. Pinkie's Present
So sweet, felt so in character
3. Luna's Future, which barely counts as a song
Im lightly rustled that it is leading, fucking princessfags filling this board
4. Hearth's Warming Eve Is Here Once Again
Worse than the original
5. AJ's song
Pure shit, should not sing again

Dont count AJ's song and the episode would be 10/10

Obviously there aren't many Dolly Parton fans in the audience.

Other music styles require actual knowledge on musical composition and talent, they also require one to own and know how to play an actual instrument since computer generated sounds are always inferior in some cases and completely horrid for the rest.
>>
>>27364088

The style would be swing, I'd probably classify it as holiday swing.
>>
>>27373456
To be fair, most of the instrumentation of the songs in the show are computer generated, particularly the drums, and they sound completely natural most of the time. There are ways to emulate real playing, not everything is just perfectly quantized to the beat and sent out the door.
>>
>>27364088
To add, Andrea doesn't sing for Pinkie, I think it's Shannon Chan-Kent or something. Agreed though, her performance was insanely infectious.

>>
>>27373603
Well, maybe, but still; without even comparing that most of the show's bg music not only is a complement and not the main focus of the work, you still need a well trained ear (from playing an instrument) to calibrate the synthetic sounds. And considering the show's own atmosphere most of the time, synthetic drums and strings aren't really that noticeable, they may even add up well to said atmosphere (drums particularly sound more like a xylophone, which is what they'd be probably using most of the time if music software wasn't a thing), unlike other genres of music like Opera or punk rock which would sound awful even with well calibrated computer sounds.

Rewatching the episode I just noticed that Pinkie's Presents is the "main" theme in the episode, playing, obviously, when the present spirit comes, playing as a BGM after the end of the story, when Starlight is going to the party and on the Outro.

They must've been really proud of that music in particular.

Gonna be honest, I didn't like this episode. The main moral was trying to say Christma- I mean, Hearthswarming was more than just the story of the windigoes, it was supposed to be about family and friends and love, etc.. Then the big twist at the end is if she cast the spell, the windigoes would come back.

None of the songs really struck me as great. I don't remember any of them other thank Ponk's, and really I only remember hers because of the pun (present). The animation wasn't that great either.

It seemed like they just wanted to do A Christmas Carol and shoehorned in everything.

Anybody want to give a highlight of why this was a good episode to them? I really want to like it, but just can't seem to.
>>
>>27373683
Well I don't know if you 'need' a well trained ear more-so than you need a good sense of how to make music sound good. Education doesn't necessarily correlate with that, nor does years of training on an actual instrument. Of course this can only be valuable, and for most people it may very well be a necessity, but I think you're painting a bit of a false dichotomy here.

I feel you though, especially considering the background instrumentation. I was referring to the actual songs, but your points are defiantly reasonable.
>>
>>27373915
Well, I guess most people who don't play instrument wont really notice if a recorded sound is artificial or authentic. But my point still stands; most people do dubstep and electro remixes because they are relatively much easier to do and don't require much knowledge to sound "good" (that is, compared to more dubstep).
It's like a bad YTP.
>>
>>27373799
>They must've been really proud of that music in particular

"Hearth's Warming Eve Is Here Once Again" honestly got me the most. I love choral stuff, and the whole intro was just super comfy.

Pinkie's, Luna's, and Glimmer's songs were all great too. Pinkie was very high on the liveliness and comfiness. I loved the way Luna's song ends with her voice melding with the wind; gave me chills. Glimmer was very "show toonnish" for my tastes, but it was very good.

I liked Appul, but it doesn't have the staying power of the others.

Probably the best one can hope for in a 22 min cartoon.

The songs were the best part of the episode, especially Luna's and Snowfall's/Starlight's. Starlight was a much better singer than I had anticipated and Luna's was chilling in a wonderful way.

But the message about the importance of love and companionship was somewhat lost on me when Twilight's story ended up really being about the calamity of the wendigos and how they needed to be kept at bay.
>>
>>27374208
Isn't love and companionship what keeps them away though? I guess i can see where you are coming from, but it makes enough sense to me.
>>
>>27374287
It seemed a bit too practical to have to do with emotional things. And it was a pretty big step in a different direction than the other two ghosts' line of thinking, which were entirely emotional.

>"You need love and friends to be happy! That's what it's all about."
>"Yeah, no. I don't care about that."
>"Then the world is going to freeze and everybody will die."
>"... Alright, I'll give it a shot."
