Emerald decides to test out the corn, but not eat the whole thing. Emerald takes a few small nibbles off the the black vegetable.

It tastes a lot like the grass he ate before, like cardboard mixed with ashes, though he can detect a small amount of sweetness from the corn.

What does Emerald do?
>>

Emerald decides to gather up some of the food anyway. He may have to make due with it for a while. He looks towards the farm house, and spotting an aged, woven basket, picks it up and puts a few of each of the vegetables into it.

Emerald then takes it back to the outpost and puts the vegetables on a table. He wonders if maybe he could try to start a fire and cook them. He read a Colt Scout handbook once, and he thinks he remembers how to make a firestarter. There certainly is enough old wood around here to make a blaze. He'll think about it a bit more though.

Emerald walks over to the lookout and enjoys the view again, and takes a look at the sun to guess how much time he has left. It's getting pretty close to sunset, but the colt would guess he has an hour or two.

What does Emerald do?
>>
>>27073585
Apparently an "upside down" fire is supposed to be smokeless? I'm also worried about the light a fire would generate. And at night that'd pretty much stick out like a sore thumb if you were close enough. Maybe i'm just being too paranoid.

>>
>>27073716
Honestly a fire during the day may be worse.
A pillar of smoke in the sky is pretty noticeable.
At least at night we may be able to use the cover of darkness to sneak away if something does get attracted.
Ideally we don't start a fire in the first place though.

Emerald walks to the nearby structure that looks to be a church. The steeple is so high that it is as tall as the broken tower in the middle of the town. Surprisingly, it also look quite a bit better taken care of than anything else among the clearing. There are no missing shingles here, and the windows are clean and the shrubery... Relatively tamed.

There is a double door in the front of the building.

What does Emerald do?
>>
>>27074036
Knock
>>
>>27074036

>>
>>27074036
The church being so well taken care of is a big red flag in my book. Enter carefully, quietly.
>>
>>27074004

Half of the reason I suggested the fire was cause we wanna get help if anyone is even nearby enough to see it.

But if we aren't looking to potentially get someones help,(if there is anyone even nearby) then we shouldn't stick around here longer than the rest of the night.
>>
>>27074054
not yet let's scope the place out by peaking in the window.
>>
>>27074036
let's patrol the grounds around the building first. What's back behind it? >>27074036
>>
>>27074058
Maybe there is a necormancer here or something? That building is very very eerily untouched.

Unless those creatures really do hate things like churches, but I doubt that's the case, personally.

>>27074056
>>27074065
Let's do this too.
>>
>>27074064
Fair point.
>>
>>27074036
Are we here to talk about our lord and savior? If not, then leave. We don't wanna be seen as heretics around these parts.
>>
>>27074036

Clean? In good shape. That might mean there's someone living there. Be cautious they could be dangerous. Let's try to peak in the window or check around the building first before we enter.
>>
>>27074079
My thoughts exactly. Someone has to be taking care of it, and in a forest full of undead? It's either someone who knows how to ward them off, which would make sense given it's a church, or someone controlling them.
>>
>>27074101
If someone is warding it off, it's gotta be one from the Order of the Arrow. They're the only guys that would fit this situation.
>>
>>27074148
That actually sounds like it could be pretty plausible. Especially since they've taken up refuge in a church.
>>
>>27074198
And from the fact that they specialize in fighting off anything involving dark arts.
>>
>>27074148
>>27074198
>>27074212

True but do we even know if they operate in this region?
>>
>>27074212
But on the flipside it could still be a necromancer. That feels like it's less likely than the Order of the Arrow member now. Just cause I can't imagine a necromancer wanting to stay in a church. But it's still possible.

Or the necromancer could be residing in the building just cause it's the building in the best shape here. But who knows.

>>27074222
I imagine they might be like a missionary or something if it is a member.
>>
>>27074222
>>27074240
From our recent experiences with them. They probably travel scattered all over the place in groups of 2. It wouldn't be surprising if we caught two of them camping here figuring out how to stop the undead problem and the necromancer, if there even is one.
>>
>>27074255
Maybe they don't normally don't travel in twos and what's her face was just training. Or maybe they do normally travel in twos, I don't recall if that was actually stated or not.
>>
>>27074324
I think they do, but it's like a master and an apprentice kinda thing. But this place probably has enough evil around it that it would attract them to come.
>>
>>27074343
When I say "they" I mean any Order of the Arrow members. And I wasn't sure if it was standard procedure for all members to do so.

Emerald walks around the entirety of the building. It looks good all the way around, and near the back he sees a door in the back, as well as what appears to be a trapdoor going into a basement.

Emerald heads back around to the front and peers through the windows. He can't really see anything but pews, but he thinks he sees some sort of odd statue. Unfortunately he can't get a good look at it.

Emerald looks all around him to make sure he isn't being followed, and also looks inside to see if anyone is there. Not spying anything, he listens hard at the door. There don't seem to be any noises either. He opens the door slowly and peers inside. It's rows and rows of pews, and near the back of the room is an altar with candles on it. Some sort of horse skull headed metal thing mounted on a stick sits behind the altar, and there also appear to be two tapestries with some sort of object with an eye under it.

There are exits near the tapestry in the back, as well as a single exit on each side of the room nearest to Emerald.

What does Emerald do?

(Last for the night!)

Emerald slowly approaches the altar, checking the pews as he goes. He sees nothing worth taking, but he does notice how clean the place is, at least compared to the other places in this village.

There are clear layers of dust in some places, but in others it looks like someone... Or something has been sitting on them.

Emerald makes it to the altar and examines the statue again. It's quite creepy.

He looks at the symbol on the tapestry again.

>Int Check
>Rolled 1, passed

He can't quite put his hoof on it, but he recognizes the symbol as someone of great infamy from the long past. He thinks it was an invader of some kind.

Emerald looks around the altar, but other than the candles and the tapestry there doesn't seem to be anything here.

Here’s something I wrote up inspired by this image.Decided to do the warrior one first. I had a bit of writer's block so I tried a different approach to it.

Colt Quest’s Ending: The Emerald warrior.
By Psker

Emerald sat in front of the campfire and stared into the flames. It had been 11 years now since he finally escaped from his vile step-parents and begun his quest. 11 years of running, of fighting, and of planning.

He thought back to when he first met Joyride. She was a very strange, perverted immortal mare. But she took care of him and taught him so much. Using his’s knowledge goat magic he ’pushed’ a stack of sticks into the fire without moving a single muscle. He briefly wondered how she was doing these days. It had been 7 years since he last saw her after all.

"I have to go and learn from others." He remembered telling her, shortly after banishing that demon in the abandoned fort they found. She gave her traditional grin and wished him luck and told him of who to speak with to learn how to fight. He still wondered how much of that grin was simply a mask to what she felt underneath. At least he hope she understood what he had to do, what he must do to finally have peace.

He recalled from others of whom he learned from since leaving Joyride. Renbow the pegasus archer, Tristar the earth pony mercenary, Olamilekan the zebra Alchemist, are some that stood out. They taught him a lot as well. They taught him how to survive in the wilds, how to cook and plan, and how to kill. That last one was the hardest to learn, but one that was necessary. He wouldn’t admit it to anyone, but the faces of those few he has killed still haunted him.

For several years he wandered, traveling from town to town doing various jobs and favors that applied to his skills. Sometimes traveling with those he befriended, other times alone. But In that time he plotted and planned.

Last year after his many travels he finally felt he was ready to confront his step-parents.
>>
>>27079643

When he visited Witherwater, and reunited with Hope, she was worried about what he planned on doing and urged him to think it over. She pointed out that there hardly have been any posters of Emerald or any wandering mercs looking for him in the past few years and that they are probably no longer looking for him. He told her that’s even better as they wouldn’t be expecting him to return ’home’.

He smiled to himself as he remembered how the rest of the evening went with her. Soon he wouldn’t have to wander any more and he can then finally settle down. To do what, he hadn’t decided yet. But as he stared into Hope’s eye when they were in bed he could tell that she was worried, perhaps worried that he would get hurt.

Rest assured he wasn’t facing his step-parents alone.

"Hey, I just finished checking out those walls. I should be able to sneak in easily enough." Ruby said, having stealthily entered the campsite without him noticing. Emerald smiled and gave her a nod. It was easy busting the mare out of jail with some well applied corrosive potions. She was fairly surprised on who it was that freed her, after all it had been a long time since they last saw each other.

"Do you think you’ll be able to get the gate down?" He asked getting up from the campfire.

"Yeah, it’s no problem. I’ve broken into bigger places than this. Will your step-parents have that treasure?"

"Yes they will." He said glancing towards the direction where his step-parents castle lay. Ruby may want the treasure, but deep down she’s really interested in learning the truth about her family. A truth that if Emerald suspected right was hidden within those walls.

"So are you ready?" She asked giving glance at her own weapons and tools. Emerald did the same. He will either avenge his stolen childhood or not, whatever happens tonight he won’t run away anymore.

Emerald pulled his sword out from it’s sheath.

"Yes. I am."

-End!

It was awful. The tone was flat, you didn't really bother to explain or describe anything. It was more like a summary than a story, which meant there was no engagement whatsoever. It also seemed to fundamentally misinterpret the characters without showing them at all.

Blame it on writer's block and change in writing style.

Emerald just "decided" to go get more training. That's not really the way that Emerald works. Joyride just accepts it with a smile. Joyride is internally clingy and jealous, refuses to let anyone go and gets really upset when she has to. Are we even reading the same CYOA here?

>Emerald just "decided" to go get more training. That's not really the way that Emerald works. Joyride just accepts it with a smile. Joyride is internally clingy and jealous, refuses to let anyone go and gets really upset when she has to.

Emerald wants revenge on his step-parents. There's probably only so much he can learn from her. Being an earth pony an all. In this story he did stay with her for two years. Joyride can be clingy but there's times she's just puts on a (fake) smile and say "good luck."

I did not intend for it to seem that she's a-okay with it, just reluctant acceptance of it. Remember this is all from Emerald's pov from 9 years before.

>You can blame me if you like.
Well yes. You wrote it. Where else would the blame lie for producing less than quality work? If Ficfic drew a shitty image and I cared I'd blame him for drawing a shitty image, no matter how drunk he was. Is this a victim complex or something?

As far as this story goes the biggest problem is that it's completely uninteresting. It's a situational snippet that tries to explain something that doesn't really need to be explained. And since that's all it does, there's nothing interesting about it. Explaining things that don't need to be explained is actually done several times in the story itself, extending paragraphs for no reason.

The characters could also be pretty easily switched out with anyone else for how close they follow the quest characters.

Overall meh/10, try again.

It wasn't bad or anything. I feel like for a shorter description it kinda lacked, flair. I don't know how to describe it but thanks for the little story.

Is there any favorite authors,(of fanfiction or otherwise, it doesn't matter) that you like to read? Do you try and borrow habits and word usage from them? I feel like a way that most people improve whether it's art or writing is from taking things from people they like and blobbing them together till you have your style.

>Well yes. You wrote it. Where else would the blame lie for producing less than quality work?

Fair enough, I'm just saying that it's mostly the fault of writer's block and being experimental with the approach. Obviously it didn't pay off.

I want to adventure too, but I also want to roleplay. If we were Emerald would we mindlessly wander into something clearly dangerous?
That being said, quick someone think of some way to justify wandering into something clearly dangerous.
>>
>>27081277
Well even though it might be a bit dangerous, taking a look around could give is a better understanding of who is here and how they are working.
>>
>>27075220
Here's what we do: we start a fire. Find one of the candles that'd start a fire if it were knocked over. Go light a small fire out away from the little village, light that candle, and put the fire out. Carry the candle back and make sure something catches, like a tapestry. Then run outside, close the door softly, and look in a window.

Whatever sentient is in the building will come to pout out the fire and blame it on their own carelessness. If the sentient looks evil we can avoid plan from there, if the sentient looks nice then we can come back in a few hours and strike up conversation.
>>
>>27081468
But what if we release an evil ancient by doing that?

I'm also kinda confused about the point of >Go light a small fire out away from the little village, light that candle, and put the fire out.

I do wonder how many of them there is too, if there isn't just one person,(pony, or whatever the case may be).
>>
>>27081277
He might, if he thought there could be something helpful. I also think it'd give him peace of mind to look around the village and find nothing immediately dangerous. Lastly, I like to think Emerald's ballsier than most people might think at first glance

>>27081468
I'm not sure about this idea, if only because we might burn down the whole village if nothing comes to put it out. That'll mean no shelter in the coming night. The fire'll also be a huge beacon to anything nearby.

>>27075220
>>27077408
Seconding we take a candle. It's not the most ideal fire carrier, but we could use it to carry a fire in case Emerald doesn't know how to make a proper fire bundle.
>>
>>27081525
Whatever happens happens

Because coltscout fires are easily deductible as a not-a-candle-someone-left-lit-by-accident fire. The set up is to make whoever finds it think it's an accident. It'd avoid a search if they're evil, and avoid putting them against us if they're good. And people usually assume the easiest explanation for events, then don't question their assumptions.

Fires usually make everyone come running, so we'd find out.
>>
>>27081586

I think this a rather elaborate plan for just trying to find out who's here. Can't we just look around for other clues?
>>
>>27081611
Sure, if you want to do it the normal boring way.
>>
>>27081586
>>27081611
Elaborate yes, but that's certainly not a bad thing. Elaborate plans are necessary sometimes.

But unless they are fairly close, wouldn't quite a bit of the building burn first before they would notice? Or even completely burn down before they would notice much less get there?

I do think it's an idea worth noting.
>>
>>27081644
The building isn't terribly big, a fair portion of the tapestry would probably burn but it's unlikely to catch on to the rest of the place quick enough to be a serious issue. Unless everyone in the building is asleep.
>>
>>27081644
>>27081715

Can't we wait to burn the place down until after we learn more?
>>
>>27081715
I now see that it has multiple levels. But I assumed that it was empty cause if there was anyone there at the moment, we should of heard some signs of life by now.

>>27081737
Yeah it probably would be a good idea to wait a bit for that, I was mostly just trying to figure out the details for it if we decide to do it.
>>
>>27081782
>But I assumed that it was empty cause if there was anyone there at the moment, we should of heard some signs of life by now.

if the dark wizard is a vampire or a lich they might live in the basement or elsewhere asleep until nightfall...
>>
>>27081805
If they're evil and asleep during the day then we'd just be making sure they died. We'd be saving the land.
>>
>>27081805
If that's actually the case, then you do have a point.

>>27081815

Emerald takes a look behind the tapestries. There doesn't seem to be any doors behind them, but there are doors NEAR the tapestries. He listens at one of them and doesn't hear anything, and cracking the door slightly open he sees what appears to be a rather well furnished office. All the walls are paneled with nice looking dark brown wood, and there is a rather regal looking brownish rug on the floor. Near the back there is a desk and some bookcases.

Emerald shuts that door for now. He then goes and grabs one of the candles off the altar.

>Will Check
>Rolled 6, Failed

For some reason, Emerald suddenly feels a strange urge to burn down the church. The colt wonders if maybe he should wait and explore the place a bit first though...

What does Emerald do?

What was the will roll for? Was it for resisting the urge to burn down the church? I'm confused.

We'll definitely wanna take a look in that office at some point. If that doesn't have any clues as to what happened then I don't know what will.

Emerald pockets the candle, and then goes to the other door by the tapestry. Cracking the door slightly he sees a hallway, but it curves and he can't see where it goes.

Emerald heads back to the office looking area and looks at the books on the shelf.

The writing is pony, but a very old version of it. Most of the books are ledgers, but a few look to be notes about the church-goers. Mostly talleys about indiscretions or blasphemous behavior. Emerald is a little disconcerted about one of the columns labeled "sacrifice donations."

Emerald also finds a large, intricate tome labeled "The Tidings of the Returned". He tries to open the book, but it appears to be locked with some sort of key mechanism. Emerald looks in and on the desk, but finds nothing.
