I think it's more about a rate of rubs as a function of time, or d(rubs)/dt. Think about caffeine. No one has ever dies of an accumulation of total caffeine ever consumed, but it is possible to overdose and die if you get too much caffeine at once.
If d(rubs)/dt is greater than or equal to d(boops)/dt, it can lead to depression, and suicide. This kills the pony. The only proper way to ensure proper rubbing behavior is to implement a PID controller to determine when and how many rubs to give per hour.
