So, has anyone been following the SGaP hype? Any theories, or ideas on how to crack the mystery?

There's a new website up with SGaP related stuff on it, and several things asking for investigation.

It started with this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SGaP/comments/46uk55/tribute_to_everyone/
A post by a brand new user, with a Pone name, with hints which led to a server. (see comments)
The server itself:
http://23.95.95.9
Attempts to understand what was on there have continued to this day.

It continued a few days later with UnmakeableLove (one of his tumblrs) posting `waiting' on the blog, and adding a comment to the html (see pic).

This server (password locked now?) had a whole host of (new) files related to set theory, astronomy, and general SGaP stuff. Along with that, images which hinted towards a return of SGaP.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SGaP/comments/46uk55 gives a relatively good summary of the early findings. See:
https://www.reddit.com/r/SGaP/comments/4c5o2t/analysation_of_the_mystery_website/
for more later info.
The /r/sgap subreddit has more posts related to this, but this is all that I know about it.

From binary to decimal, assuming word sizes of 6 as seem to be implied by the slashes:

Preface: you're all entitled to your opinions.

Personally, even as someone who's been on this board since it's creation (because SGaP evangelicals on here will scream no true Scotsman if you dare criticize their god), I've always thought he was astronomically overrated. Not awful, but not even close to as brilliant as his fans on here make him out to be, who for some reason can't stop sucking his dick and practically worship him like he's the fucking second coming (and considering his extended leave from the fandom he more or less *is* Jesus to these people).

I dunno. To me, almost everything of his I've heard sounds like Aphex Twin with a bunch of glitched pony samples thrown in, and that the people who swear he's the greatest thing they've ever heard were first introduced to music through this fandom.

tldr: He's not terrible, but he's vastly overrated.

From someone who didnt know about this guy until this thread:

I made my research. He's totally way better than most of those "meme brony guys" and seems to actually understand music as it is.

Its overated? I guess. This is new to me and feels like the Nix meme.
(In any means i am NOT comparing those by "quality" or something, just a technical pointout).
So (from what i been listening to), his works have its ups and downs.
Not gonna start a musical discussion because:

Tl;dr 8/10 i like it. Hope he "gets back" or just come out of the shadows and creates any content.

Could some of you big SGaP fans maybe explain why you like him so much better than everyone else?

>>27001049
>>27001367
When I first heard about SGaP here after starting to browse /mlp/, I really didn't see what people liked so much about his music. I found it to be OK, but not amazing as others seemed to think.

I've since warmed up to his music and would definitely say it's pretty good especially from a "trying new/unusual concepts" standpoint, but I still don't see why some people like him so much more than everyone else. I personally would put him on a similar level as Carbon Maestro, TheDashDub, and Evening Star's more recent work (there's probably some good singers too, but I'm more into instrumental stuff and don't know who'd be a good fandom singer), which are pretty much the best fandom composers I know of. So I see him more like "one of the good ones" and not "the single best one". I'd sure like it if he comes back.
>>
Bumpo
>>
>hot opinions
Yeah SGaP is hot shit on here, can't deny that. Personally I'm a musical casual shitter, so I don't really see the hype around him. The music is nice and I enjoy listening to his works but I never understood the God-status he receives.
Nonetheless if this mystery turns out to be his return then I'll be happy with that. I just hope it's not some fake bullshit.
>>
>>27001444
>Could some of you big SGaP fans maybe explain why you like him so much better than everyone else?

Mostly because his music sounds very, very pretty. I ain't no professional musical critic, but every one of his tracks flows as nicely as any professionally mastered albums I've heard.

On top of that, the lyrics (as much as you can say there are lyrics in SGaP's work) combine very nicely with the pace and tone of the music, which contribute to an overall resounding theme. RD/RA, for example, is all about relationships (specifically Rararararara and Dash2fast) and how they're defined. "It wouldn't be any of us. Just that... That little space, in between." Relationships aren't all the individuals in them, they're the connections between them. The rest of the song details exactly what that means.

All of his works are like that. Especially space pony, my favourite album of his, which is about making it to a better place. This, combined with just how damn pretty his music is, makes him one of my favourite musicians.

His music IS experimental, though, and I can totally understand how some don't find his work particularly interesting.
>>
>>27001444
>So I see him more like "one of the good ones" and not "the single best one".
Okay so I was kind of rushing the post because it was at page 10 and didn't want to lose the thread, but to address this point here: I'd agree with this. Sturgeon's Law is VERY relevant to Brony Music. 90% of everything is crap, 90% of the rest is just okay. But I'd put the artists you mentioned, SGaP, and a few others, into the last 1% of "really fucking good."
Speaking of "really fucking good," ever heard Makkon or PonyVisation's stuff? Carbon Maestro's Pony Empire is relatively similar in tone to Makkon's one good album (the rest of his stuff is pretty shit), Antipodes. PonyVisation is much more consistent, following much more closely to TheDashDub. PonyVisation is all about lengthy piano improv; pretty much perfect relaxation music, since a few of his tracks last 15+ minutes.

Just a few more recs from the likes you listed.
>>
>>27003121
Another anon here, agreed. His music is definitely experimental, something new I've never heard, that's why I personally am so drawn to it.
I've also listened to some of Makkon's stuff, but I wasn't aware he had "albums". Is there a place to listen to these, since his YT is fairly barren?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPqdIEsMpgU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS7aKJXjgE4
There's Volumes 1 and 2 of his old Pone work. I call them his `albums,' because they're the good shit he made in 2 volumes.
>>
>>27003844
Oh, yeah, right, I've heard these, even back when it wasn't just "old music". Dunno how I missed them when looking through the channel. Thanks anyway.
>>
>>27003871
Yeah, no problem. I listened to Deae Lunae all those years back. God, that captivated me instantly. I miss 2010-11's scene. Even if Sturgeon is overwhelmingly right, the NEWNESS of all that creativity and crap was just the perfect storm, however cliche that phrase is now.

I remember first reading Antipodes, and then seeing the theme, and listening to each chunk as he released 6 songs in a row, and finally downloading the completed and remastered album... Man, it's been too long.
>>
>>27003904
Definitely. Back when I got on the ride in summer '11 after S1 ended I was inhaling anything from the fandom. Nowadays when I look back I sometimes can't believe to what garbage I sometimes listened to just because it was pony. Only a few gems are left that I still reminisce about and gladly listen to. Even if just to rekindle that nostalgia.
>>
>>27003121
Thanks. That's pretty much what I got from his stuff and also what I like, although I haven't payed that close attention to the lyrics yet.
His music is definitely very interesting and has a lot of thought put in it.
>>
>>27005817
For me the lyrics and the style of singing and his voice are kinda off putting, though I really enjoy the instrumentals.
>>
>>27005861
>the lyrics and the style of singing
I love those about him, personally. Comes across as very honest, unaltered, and gentle.
>>
>>27005861

I totally agree with you on the voice. Being an oldfag, i found their first works to be very good. But then he started singing and all the magic was lost on me.

I don't mean to say he can't write. His lyrics are well composed. He has this way to put multiple meanings in few phrases. But his voice makes it hard to feel them. In my opinion, he is a better composer than a singer.
>>
>>26999756
'The Standard Model' is my favorite.
>>
Can anyone recommend me some good fandom singers or in general good songs?

I know about ponyphonic, and I think Joaftheloaf and 4everfreebrony's stuff is pretty decent, at least I liked https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH0sApQgCsE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwTNH2gD3cI from the latter, but otherwise I barely know anyone. Aviators is a name hear sometimes, the few tracks I've heard seemed OK but were nothing amazing. Obviously there's BlackGryph0n + "friend" & family's stuff too, but while it's not bad, it's often too "generic pop song"-ish for my taste.

>>27003176
>Makkon
Yes, I know him. I didn't list more because I didn't want to overload the list with too many names. I also think Radiarc, MelodicPony, Artem Yegorov, and Orchestral Design to be pretty good.

>PonyVisation
Never heard of him before, piano improv sounds pretty great though. He sadly seems to have deleted all his stuff however, most links on Google lead to nothingness and despair. I did found his collab with PhillyPu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUgFONBSmr0) and liked it. Speaking of PhillyPu, obligatory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZZNDiU9ljw.

Have you heard SeventhElement's Ministry Mares album? I've never read Fallout: Equestria and doubt that I ever will, but this music is pretty amazing, especially if you also read some summaries on the FoE wiki to understand what it's trying to represent. His other stuff is not my style and probably crap, though, so be warned.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJzEnG_dV3s
You may want to skip the first track, it's a little boring.

>>27005861
>>27005888
>>27006161
Yeah, his voice is a bit unusual. I think I'm more or less neutral to it, however I haven't listened to most of his singing and I do have a bit of trouble understanding the lyrics, being a non-native speaker.

Also I've been listening to MelodicPony's stuff while writing this post and holy fuck I forgot how great this stuff is.

It's rare that I see my name come up in threads like these, but I appreciate it a lot

I wish I could recommend some good vocal tracks since I know they're out there, but I've spent most of my recent time working on helping orchestral musicians improve, so I don't have much knowledge outside of that.

I do have a question, though:
Is there any certain style or certain aspects of music that you guys look for?
Most of the feedback musicians get is "nice" or "good job"; there isn't much constructive criticism despite the fandom being in constant desperate need of it.
>>
>>27005861
>lyrics and the style of singing and his voice are kinda off putting
Damn, that's some of my favourite parts of his music, but I know it's entirely subjective. It's just so damn gentle and calming, especially in tracks like 40 Winks and star hopper. Still, I can understand your position.

>>27006274
>recommend
oh fuck, I need to dig back into my old memories. It's been forever since I actively kept up with the MLP music group at large, I just stick with the rumours of SGaP; all the others have pretty much left. I know SimGretina put out one album I liked:
http://simgretina.bandcamp.com/album/summer-in-ponyville
But other than that his work is far too WUBSTEPPYLULZ for me. I liked SenatorMyth's stuff, all 3 short albums of it:
http://senatormyth.bandcamp.com/music
None of it is lyrical, but his orchestral work is comfy af.
All the other ones you mentioned are all I know and followed back then. Also holy shit MelodicPony has gotten REALLY FUCKEN GOOD. I need to keep track of him again.

Shit, I just checked. You're right, PonyVisation took down EVERYTHING, including his bandcamp. Thank god I have everything of his in FLAC. I could upload it all for you guys, if you want; any recs for filesharing sites? I could get a MEGA account, I guess.

>>27006482
40 Winks is a fucken masterpiece of atmosphere

>>27006618

To answer your question: soundscape/atmosphere is the #1 thing I look for in music. I mean, my favourite genres are ambient, mello-plunderphonics, and folk, so I'm a little biased there. But if you look above at 40 Winks, a huge amount of effort was put into establishing a soundscape (especially in the beginning). The echoing 'asleep' and 'sheep' and all the other words bounce back and forth, left and right, especially when listening with nice headphones; it really establishes the music in its own space. There's places in the song where there's a bit of static to indicate calmness, especially notable at 2:30 to the end.
>>
>>27006855
funny you mention that; I'm actually working on a small Pinkamena EP that's 80% ambient stuff, taking inspiration from Silent Hill and whatnot

https://clyp.it/trvswhev

I really do wish others would work more on making their stuff sound distinct and polished, since even my friends have a bad habit of just neglecting something they could fix in less than a minute.

All that aside, I do hope SGaP comes back, since I was never really exposed to his stuff early on and it'd be cool to see him in action nowadays.

Sure, I can give you a few recommendations. Here's some good vocal stuff.

Woodlore

(Excellent folksy/country vocals and acoustic guitar twangin')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfIE_S0xp9U

Plum Creek Rhythm Section

(Poppy vocals, excellent, varied production that tends to fall on the uplifting rock edge)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWA6CiT7p_Q

Ponysphere

(Harder metal vocals with a slight European accent, heavy guitar instrumentals)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep6-XdS96R8

Silver Note

(Slightly soulful electronic musician, bright, emotional vocals)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKpWS18BY2Q

Nameless Warning

(More soulful vocals over jazzy, piano driven instrumentals. Sadly not really in the fandom anymore, but back in the day he did some great pone tracks)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGgEv814nRA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_Xd8M2pRAc

Gonna continue with nonvocal dudes in another post.

Here's some of the more instrumental-oriented cats I've been keeping my eye on lately.

Bassoonify

(Cool orchestral composer who's primary instrument is bassoon. He's done a few covers of show songs using the instrument, and they're quite good.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ulbj9YSSBc&nohtml5=False
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amyrNYdfnxM&nohtml5=False

NextLevelDerp

(If you like hardcore, speedcore, and general harsh EDM beats, this is your guy. His youtube description literally says "RIP Headphone users.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUuJD6QM3MQ&nohtml5=False
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpmi0DFaBOw&nohtml5=False

igna

(Creator of unique, squelchy, bass-heavy jams, this dude is probably one of the best EDM artists in the fandom. From bangin' dance remixes to mellow bass romps, he can do it all.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVHsMk1LoiY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGmd6DhFoJ0

Hay Tea

(Drum and Bass mafioso with a dabble of hip hop beats on the side)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nTwH-Pfn4E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__xQ5jPTmQ4

iblank2apples

(Pony-sample driven EDM tunes with excellent mixing and production)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6sru1npONU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AqngI_nKa8

NeverLastStanding

(This guy has the best remix of Pony I Want To Be in my opinion. He seems to have a knack for finding infectious dancey melodies)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbBflZH1xdg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P55dkKNtwqU

APPL3JVCK

(Ghetto trap beats with a pony twist. One of the best bassheads in the fandom)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So6_wZPpg4U
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsxULyTlLx8

Exiark

(Another EDM-heavy honcho. He's done some mixes that feature several different songs from the entirety of MLP blended into one.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00L5_Lcnqho
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfyA5Doo0LY

All in all, the fandom has continued to put out preddy gud stuff. You just gotta look.

Personally my favorite thing about his music is his lyrics. They're the perfect mix of poetic and intelligent. Just ambiguous enough to let your imagination roam as you listen to them and fill your mind with all kinds of imagery, while meaningful enough that you feel they're alluding to something deep and profound that the writer feels strongly about. They evoke this great whimsical, nostolgic feeling in me that forms a great emotional connection.

The instrumentals also tend to be very deep and complex. Lots of delicate subtle little aspects to them that I might not really pick up up on the first few listens but that completely change the subtext of the music once I do notice them. Overall I find his music very layered and profound and it provides a meaningful listening experience I appreciate on an entirely other level than just "this sounds good." His music means a lot to me.

I'd probably recommend Ved's music, too, if he did more pony stuff. I really enjoy some of his other music (City of Progress is great), but the 2.5 pony tracks he made aren't all that amazing.

Also I feel that he tends to be a bit too repetitive.

I'm afraid I can't really say a lot here, either. I enjoy listening to music, but I don't know a whole lot about it, so I don't really know what to say in terms of criticism, unless I listen to one track a whole load of times. And that's usually not exactly what I want to do.
As for what I look for, it's probably similar to what >>27006855 said, I like music that creates a nice atmosphere or just generally sounds like there was put some thought into it instead of just arranging some instruments. It's obviously heavily influenced by my taste and I can't really describe it in a more formal way, so I don't think it's very useful.

Was never huge into pony music, but I remember listening to Standard Model and enjoying it somewhat, specifically the one that repeats "Good Appearance" with that piano sample. I really wish I could have bought pic related as I met the guy selling them at Canterlot Gardens convention. Still pissed I passed on buying the original painting he did of a distance shot of Canterlot. He disappeared after that convention which really sucks because I likes his work and wanted to get something from him at some point. Man SGaP makes me nostalgic.

It's never too late to sit down and give it a shot.
Find a free DAW or torrent , look at a tutorial, and see what you can do.
Actually making something isn't too difficult, but making something and having the courage to share it is the tough part, since it's pretty necessary for improvement.
If it seems intimidating, that's because it is - arranging music can take a long time to learn, but it's worth it.

Not that anon, but you're right, it's never to late to start. Though I feel the pony music fad has pretty much run its course mainly because I never see people on /mlp/ talk about new musicians in the fandom. It's usually the same old people from 2013 and before and some of them aren't making music anymore. I mean, I get it, there's a shitload of garbage tracks out there, but certainly there has to be some talent aside from the same old names I've been seeing. Just in this thread I found a new name that I like so they're out there, but I feel like no one bothers to search for it,. and that's what kind of off-puts me, new talented artists trying to gain a following, but no one bothers to find them and instead sticks with what's familiar. I wrote one long orchestral piece 3 years ago, and people didn't notice it at all since I typically see the same "top" names in the orchestral genre of the pony fandom.

I don't know, I guess I'm just getting sick of spending weeks on a track and getting overshadowed by the same names I've been seeing since 2011.
>>
>>27017340
>I don't know, I guess I'm just getting sick of spending weeks on a track and getting overshadowed by the same names I've been seeing since 2011.

Everything you said is pretty much true. Nobody is really looking for new music. This is a fandom steeped in nostalgia, even hipsterish /mlp/. The same names always crop up...Glaze, Tombstone, Aviators, Mando, Archie, AlexS...if you aren't one of these guys you might as well not exist. Bronies have their playlists full of 2012-era music and don't bother looking for anything new. Why should they? They have their nostalgia tracks and that's all they need.

However, I don't think it's as bleak as you paint it. Yes, it sucks to have your music ignored, and it's going to happen. But I think if you simply continue to try, continue to release music, network and talk to other musicians, you'll be able to get somewhere.

It WILL take a fair bit of patience and perseverance. This isn't 2011. Hell, it's not even 2013. But the simple fact that you're track is even tangentially pony-related will still give you that boost that it always did. It might not be as big, but it's there. And I'm gonna be honest with you...you had better REALLY like making pony music, or else you probably won't get much fulfillment out of it. If you do it for fame and popularity, you might as well just do an Undertale parody instead.

You have to do it for love of pony, and for the fans who will find your music, no matter how few. I think people these days expect too much too quickly. You're not gonna be horse-famous hot shit after one track. Not even after five. But eventually, people will notice. Nobody starts off on top. But it can happen. Only on the Hub

God damn, this has to be the best horse music thread I've read in recent memory. Many thanks to everyone for the non-cringey music recommendations, it's so hard to find stuff that's not just mindless dubstep/house remix of a single fucking word from the show being repeated to death.
>>
>>27017435
Another anon here, guilty as charged. Back in the times of my pony high I looked for a lot of new cool artists, listened to basically anything that got on EqD and beyond, back in 2011. But it gets tiring over time and with some of the shit that gets put out it's better to just play it safe, subscribe to the bunch you like and sort of stop looking. Nowadays the most research I do are the monthly top tens. There's just not enough energy and will in me to go looking like back then.
It's also why I'm glad every now and then we have threads like this where anons recommend their fav artists that don't really get noticed.
But honestly, today getting a loyal fanbase of hundreds or thousands of listeners is much harder in the pony fandom, and it's much easier to get yourself out there riding the freshest meme. It was MLP back then, then FNAF, now Undertale though that well is also starting to run dry from what I've heard.
I'd dare say this fandom won't get another brand new artist that reaches the AlexS/TLT tier of millions of views ever again.
>>
Bump for good horse music
>>
>>27017340
>Wah! Wah! My music isn't good enough and people won't listen to it just because I say it's pony related.
You need to make good music for people to listen. You aren't entitled to listeners just because you slap a pony name on an instrumental track

.>>27017854
I have and continue to listen to every single song on EqD since early 2011. It's an easy way to find any artists claiming to be pony related. I even listen to all of the MotD posts just in case something good stands out
It used to be that 1-2 weeks after an episode with a song, there would be 10+ different remixes that were decently good out, but now there's maybe 1 or two that come out, 3 weeks after an episode. There just aren't as many
music artists making decent music any more and the ones that do are more of the slow-burn type that might make a few good songs per year.

>>27017435

Uh okay, thanks for taking that completely out of context. I never said I was entitled to anything. And "good music" is mostly subjective though I'd like to say that genre plays a huge role in popularity. More people are going to search for EDM than orchestral. Also I get critique and feedback on the music I write with my group of music friends when I ask for it so I'm pretty sure it's decent.

If you're in it for the views, it's all about marketing yourself as well as doing your best to find things you're interested in that coincide with the interests or possible interests of the masses you're aiming to appeal to, like doing something for a new character or whatever game is being talked about everywhere.
Again, if it's not your style or not something you genuinely want to do, don't go for it, but coming from a fellow orchestral guy, if you just make the stuff that you truly want to make and nobody's listening, don't take it so rough; try to find a middle ground and give 'em something that'll keep them coming back to your channel.

And this is coming from someone who's been working since '11, trying to compete with the big names.
I've been taking time as of late to find those up and coming artists and give them the best advice I can, but it's up to them to improve and really make a name for themselves.
>>
>>27022158
Yeah, I'm pretty garbage at marketing. I've been experimenting with new styles since my first fandom song with genres I'm also keen with. I've been writing for a very long time now, and it is certainly something I want to stick with despite popularity. I guess I just get a little salty when the overrated big names continue getting more popular and the underrated get lost in obscurity.

This is a long stretch, but are you radiarc?

>>
>>27023395

It's weird to find out that you're the one complaining about trying to compete, because I consider you a fairly successful fandom artist. Personally I'm not a fan of orchestral music but I know your name, I see your work around here and there, and I think it's generally well received; that sounds like success to me. I've always considered those "big names" previously mentioned to be way overrated and just a fad who happened to be in the right place in the right time, and that seems to have been pretty much confirmed by most of them dropping out of the fandom and moving on to more lucrative scenes. I've never been one to buy into that sort of shit; in my eyes your kind are the real fandom musicians.
>>
>>27023833
Don't all fandom musicians by definition have to be in the right place at the right time? like they have to be a music producer, online, and during the time that the fandom exists?

The problem I have with really getting into the instrumental stuff is that it really doesn't say "pony" to me. I like fandom music because a lot of it is a remix on the show itself or somehow directly referencing the characters therein.
The instrumental music could be about anything. Without vocals it's not really pony, and if it's not pony then I could listen to it from any artist, not just the fandom. Once you start comparing music to other music outside the fandom
you end up against a whole larger group of talented musicians trying to win over people's ears.

The electronic music gets a lot of shit in the fandom, but to me, it's far and away a genre with many high quality examples and strong ties to pony via voice samples and music remixes. Any non-remix, non-orchestral music requires someone
who can actually sing AND sound good. People like that are in short supply.
>>
>>27006161
I think his voice is alright, but my issue with him as a vocalist is that he never really mixed things up. It's always the exact same vocal style though all his songs, which tends to get grating after awhile.

>>26999756

>>
>>27024056

I think you can tell when a musician is actually inspired by the show and is making music that speaks to them like the show speaks to them, even if it doesn't have lyrics. It's the sentiment that's meaningful to me, not the explicit lyrics involved. Even if some of it might be a bit fudged.
