a) japan would have become a depopulated wasteland. The US expected so many casualities in a mainland Japan invasion that they still use the purple hearts made back then.
Instead Japan realized that arming women and children with sticks and crappy rifles wont do shit if the enemy can obliterate you with hellfire withouth any losses to himself.
b) Europe would have become a depopulated Wasteland too. The reason the cold war never went hot was that both sides knew they would get nuked, high politicans, oligarchs and military leaders just as much as everyone else. So, they didnt go to war.
