Have you noticed the animator's have started to go to far with the facial expressions

Yeah.

>>26976900
Honestly, I think it goes really well with a light-hearted episode like yesterday's.
All of Glimmer's expressions last week felt out of place and weird, so it's worth being aware of, but I liked yesterday's.
>>
>>26977322
Not out of place, just very awkward, complete with her tone.

Glimmer herself is out of place

This is the problem, I think. They're trying too hard, these days.

When >>26977319 happened, it felt like a natural, comical expression of how absolutely pants-on-head batshit insane Twilight was being. Something like >>26976900, on the other hand, feels... I don't know how to describe it exactly. Too self-aware, maybe?

Like they just made the face because they knew "the bronies like it when we draw crazy faces".
>>
>>26977650
or maybe the animators wanted to have some fun?

The world may never know.

For now, lets just worry about the real issue that is, the fun animation will never compensate for bad writing, which MLP has suffered from as of late.
>>
>>26977650
Every season the animators are required to show some improvement with their designs. The faces are either part of that or they just want to have fun. Making new faces challenges the animators. Old animators like to try new things a day new animators have different styles. Its only a bad thing if you're afraid of change
>>

>as of late.

Define "as of late".

Honestly season 5 had some of the best written episodes in the series.

Shit. Can't argue with quints.

Needles, haystacks, all that. Fewer and farther between, and most of the people responsible for said episodes are leaving or have already left.

Sibsy isn't here anymore, that why
>>
>>26977808

Its way too early in the season to judge at this point.

The premiere was a mixed bag, Starlight and Spike's bit was really good while the bit with the baby was pretty forgettable and the second episode wasn't awesome; but it had a lot of fun moments.

So far the quality is good enough that it doesn't feel like its gone to shit; but only time will tell.
>>
>>26977744
The only season that didn't have multiple "bad" episodes was season 1 because it played the safest route. That isn't to say the series has been loaded with bad episodes after season 1, but rather that it's been fairly commonplace for a season to have a few here and there. Unless you're just one of those faggots that paints season 2 as the pinnacle of quality, in which case I've already stated the only literally perfect season and it's not the second one.
>>
>>26977881

>>
>>26976900
Honestly, I take it as a good sign. The animators have been trying new things with every season and this shows they haven't given up yet. Plus it shows that they're willing to go slightly off model for the sake of expressiveness, which has worked out well for a lot of cartoons in the past. It does stick out a bit right now, but give them time and they'll get the hang of it.

>fewer and farther in between
DYERTS? This has always been the case even in S1 & 2. Good episodes buried underneath a sea of mediocre or bad episodes. Go count up what you'd consider 'well written' episodes in 1 and 2 and what were 'eh' or 'shit'.

If anything S5 was a lot better than S4 in regards to consistency. S4 had some truly shit episodes, some of the worst in the series. While S5 had Princess Spike none of the other episodes were egregiously bad (and even Princess Spike has the redeeming quality of giving us Fargo pone) and the writers actually responded to the backlash and have strove to make Spike less cucked in S6 so far.

The only reason it may seem worse is because S4 had higher highs. It had Maud Pie and Pinkie Pride along with some other really dank episodes. Meanwhile S5 wasn't bad, but there were less mindblowing episodes coming out.
>>
>>26976900
They know we're making memes
>>
>>26977808

You're right about the best writers leaving, but "fewer and farther between" is absolutely false. The post S5 episode ranking threads had S5 neck and neck with S2 for best season overall. S2 pulled out in the end, but not by much.
>>
>>26979709
I could go back to S1 or 2 right now and wouldn't even need one hand to tally up the episodes I found shitty. In fact, I have done that. Frequently.

The storytelling in S3 and beyond often makes me wish this fucking show had never sucked me out of the pit of despair I was in, because all it ended up doing was throwing me back into it, even deeper than before. Nowadays it doesn't even take me one hand to tally up the GOOD episodes in any given season aside from the aforementioned first two. Rare gems here and there, but the magic, the spark that pulled me in and made me happy for the first time in a long fucking while?

It's dead. And the ride never ends.
>>
>>26977472
Yes, I am sure the animators care greatly about a tiny part of the fandom being supplied with meme faces
>>
>>26976900
I actually think it's a major improvement.
>>
>>26976900
>>26977300
>>26979077
Wow for real?
>>
>>26979828
And you could say that it was because the people who would have dissenting opinions left for the most part except for people like >>26980025

Making an argument of quality based on a show's rating is made moot when it was done at different times without a consistent, or even an equally sized audience.

Instead, one would need full on analysis using animation, storytelling and musical concepts to evaluate whether a show has diminished in quality or not, and not a whole lot of us have the experience outside of 'uh I watch a lot of kids cartoons' which is an even bigger warning sign that we'd probably miss the forest for the trees even if we did set out to analyze shit.

Everything is subjective opinion otherwise. Do you have a better idea of quantifying quality? I'd like to hear it.
>>
>>26977650
No, it felt like a forced, unfunny Ren and Stimpy expression of how absolutely pants-on-head retarded the directing for the show has gotten.

But 99% of this fanbase refuses and denies anything about the show turning into an autistic mess right after season 1 ended. It helps them to ease the pain knowing they had at least 50 good episodes before Canterlot Wedding aired.

Quints confirm
Season 5 is best season
Oldfags are fags
>>
>>26981350
No one says otherwise, to be honest. Everyone agreed S5 was better than the last 2 seasons. It just started to take a direction in some episodes that wasn't beneficial for the show, and ended up on S6. This has the potential to be worse than S4

>>26981363

If I objectively rank episodes, all seasons have a mix of good or bad episodes. The thing is, even the good episodes no longer feel fresh. Each character has been explored, so now they are randomly pairing characters, but there is little more to "discover" about the Mane Six or Equestria.

The fandom is also getting stale. The initial ironic hipster vibe has worn off. We're past the best of the fan-animation, they'll never be another "Double Rainboom" or "Snowdrop". What's left is the Waifu side of the fandom.

These problems are not unique to MLP. Adventure Time and it's fandom also went stale.

But there's nothing else to move onto. MLP had all the ingredients to spark a fandom: it was fresh, it had a escapism fantasy world to explore in fan-fiction and imagine your OC living in, it had a selection of unique waifus, and the style of was relatively easy for fans to draw and animate. /co/ currently has nothing with these ingredients... Zootopia lacks the variety of waifus, it's world isn't escapism-enough, and it lacks a simple 2D drawing style for fan-art and comics. Inside Out gained traction on the basis of two good waifus, but the world is limited and not inviting to OCs. FNAF was a fad without enough official material to keep it's fandom going.
>>
>>26981585
Amending Fences felt pretty fresh but other than that yeah pretty much

For what purpose
>>
>>26981585
Idk about you man, but from day 1 I've been into this for the show, my interest in it, and maybe being able to talk about it with other fans

I do not give a flying fuck about "fandom" aspects, or any sense of "irony'. I've never read a single piece of fanfiction in my years in this fandom, I appreciate artwork but that's about it.

Now, I understand the idea of it not being as "fresh" in a sense, because yeah anything on earth is only new once. MLP is no longer new to me, I don't have the same wonder and curiosity about it's universe I had at the start but I still enjoy it every bit as much and it's still my favorite show, and I'd like to think if the day does somehow that I actually DON'T like it anymore I would just move onto something I do enjoy.

Why don't you get a life before trolling boards for a show you're a not even a fan of you autistic fuckin' virg.

There is literally nothing, NOTHING, sadder then having such an empty life that you do nothing but watch and post about a show you dislike every day. Get a fucking productive hobby queer.
>>
>>26977777
Season 5 was clearly the best season.
If not for that and Season 4, I would have just called MLP an alright casual cartoon instead of falling in love with it.
Season 6 is alright so far, not the best premiere, but it had nice world building, and the last episode was just funtacular.
Now we only need to see Ponyville again.
>>
>>26979709
This Pinkie here is so sexy, I could forgive everything bad in S6 just for that shot.

Not him, and I don't care much about the background of the series, but damn, is it an enjoyable and amazing series, this past year more so than ever.
I really feel like they can even make up for MA Larson or Amy Keating Rogers with new writers, as long as they make episodes like Fox brothers did.
