That would have taken some actual creative effort from the staff. Why create new characters when you can recycle new ones? The entire point of EqG was to have human versions of FiM characters. They wanted to capitalize on the already established popularity of the Mane 6.

No, they shouldn't. EQG is great as it is. The only thing it really needed and still needs is more time per story.
Part of me has to agree with >>26969886 in that I think having a large cast of original characters might be hard for the staff to pull off (though I don't think it's creativity that's shallow but rather stifled by turnaround times, executive decision, and demand for marketability) but at the same time I think with a completely different cast of human characters, some of the novelty might have been lost (since Twilight's experience is supposed to be "same but different" from her perspective).
Equestria Girls could have been better in a lot of ways. I didn't really find myself truly taken by it until Friendship Games.

Friendship Games didn't even show Equestria except for a few glimpses due to the portals Scilight created. I think they're trying to completely separate the Equestria Girls and FiM universes. Maybe EqG 4 won't even have any references to ponies at all.
