Season 3 was the season were the team had to adjust after Faust's departure. Seasons 4 and 5 is where they had a solid direction for the show. This is why S3 is so weak in comparison to the other seasons: a lack of direction.

The descriptions for each part on my TV says "Starlight's first friendship lesson" and "The Crystal Empire faces eternal winter". Basically, the Goo Goo Godlike baby causes eternal winter in the Crystal Empire (and possibly other parts of Equestria) and it's up to Twi, Starlight, and possibly Cadence to save the day.
