I'd say anything that gets more girls interested in pen and paper games is a good thing.

What's your ideal pony roleplaying game? I'd want a book similar to SCAG but for Equestria.

I'd say anything that gets girls interested in anything in the western world is a bad thing. The last thing hobbies need is more roasties.

now look at it
you see how shit it got? that's because it got popular enough with the common man that the powers of Politically Correct came out of the woodwork and fucked shit up
do you want that to happen to our PnP games too?
do you want "progress" to ruin something that's survived just fine without being Politically Correct?

>>

what are the implications of this?

Do you just blame women for that or...?
>>
>>26804176
Nah, that was just something I hate in particular right now because of how much I enjoyed Pro Skater 4, also I'm not a woman hater, I'm a "Politically Correct" hater. look at the crazy shit that games got away with in the past that wasn't just violence. Can you imagine if Conker's Bad Fur day were to be released in today's world? everyone would call it trash because of the giant poop boss and it wouldn't have done nearly as well, nowadays "Political Correctness" has gotten rid of pretty much all the crazy shit EXCEPT the boring ass gratuitous violence with le ebin graphics.
I just want to go back to the simpler days, ya' know?
>>
>>26804176
The problem isn't interested women, its once those actual hobbits come, then other women see women are there and they want to steal the male attention from those women. The attention thieving women bring with them bullshit like political correctness.

Because each of the three races can easily represent the holy trinity of RPG classes:
-Earth Pony= Fighter
-Unicorn= Mage
-Pegasus= Thief
>>
>>26803947
Im pretty sure the intent is completely supposed to be babys first rpg. Which is exactly what people are wanting. A gateway rpg to get into the more advanced stuff when the little kids that play this with their dads/creepy uncles grow up.

So I would actually be more disappointed if this was designed for the bronys rather than the target audience of the show.

There's a chance that any ponies featured in the RPG books might make it into the show. With the talent in the studio, there has bound to be maybe a fa/tg/uy or ca/tg/irl or 2 among them.

Not him, and I actually think this one looks good, but I kinda see where he's coming from. This game is being designed to accommodate the target demo, sort of like a "D&D Jr.", so someone who likes their pnp games to be a bit more complex would likely to be underwhelmed by this.
>>
>>26803647
I'm honestly surprised they're not just having Wizards of the Coast do it in-house.
>>
I'd stream this.
>>
... now all those OC's will come with stats
this is one step closer to becoming their ponysona irl
>>
>>26814407
I was thinking about that and I think they did it specifically to broaden their audience. I could see them fearing that as soon as someone sees the wotc logo on the book they will discard it due to the stigma (however little there is anymore) levied against magic and d&d.

And it could also be the competing product issue. As soon as wotc bought TSR, they canned any other (superior) non-d20 rpg at the time because they didnt want to have 2 competing products produced by the same company.

So if hasbro wanted equestria for 5e then wotc would have taken care of it, but since they didnt want to do dnd for this, they would have a different company take care of it.
>>
Of course it could also be that allessio calvatore, being the apparent brony he is, reached out to hasbro and pitched them the idea. It is likely he had the main mechanic and idea of the game system, and even the character sheets, mocked up before he even went to hasbro.

>>
So are these things like Warhammer 40chromosomes or stuff of that variety? I've never roleplayed before primarily because I have no friends.
>>
>>26816520
It's interactive storytelling. One person, the gamemaster as it is often called (also known as refreree or storyteller) sets the stage and plays the role of everyone else in the setting.

Then the players each have a character that they have named and designed on their own, following some limitations and rules. Those players role-play (or just narrate what their character is doing) as they interact with the world around them and the story and plot the gamemaster is setting out for them.

The game system itself uses dice to determine random outcomes and the players have different skills that can alter those dice rolls (a stronger character - aka buff earth pony farm hand) will have a much easier time breaking down a door than a booksmart unicorn and the dice will reflect that.

The goal of the game is not 'winning' in traditional sense, but for the gamemaster to weave a cool story for the players to interact in. The players also change the outcome of things based on their decisions and actions. Think of an RPG vidya like mass effect or dragon age (or whatever the kids are playing these days) but without a set script to govern what is happening and your only limit is your imagination.

Likely bronies will have online roleplay groups that will advertise here, like for roll20.net and what not.
>>
>>26814407
Maybe they wanted it to be good.
>>
>>26804412

The player's characters are members of SMILE, devoted to tracking down and pacifying dangerous monsters.

Gives you an excuse to send them all over Equestria, using lots of different mythological creatures, and you can have fun with secret agent jokes.
>>
>>26820981
Honestly, that's okay. I do believe that they should make some rules for alicorns, but also that it should be a near-univerally upheld house rule that alicorns are exclusively NPCs (e.g. Celestia, Luna, Cadance, Twilight, Fausticorn, and the hellspawn- I mean "Flurry Heart"), never player characters.
>>
>>26822364
I can see a player using an alicorn. That of course only for a few seconds before I'd have Discord take his powers away from him permanently for shits and giggles.

Alternatively, implement rules that force Alicorns to level more slowly and start at a lower level than the other PCs, which might balance things out.

1) A giant sapphire dragon is snoring magic dust all across Equestria. It is up to the mane6 to defeat her and rescue Princess Celestia from her crystal prison.
The mane6 must survive on a giant icy mountain and then go deep inside the caverns full of ghosts, illusions and crystal creatures.
>>
>>26823237
See, that's why we're practicing.
When you're planning the story for a roleplaying game, you're making it for your players and their characters.
The mane 6 and every other pony is being put aside, making cameos or act as helpers or quest givers.
The main cast are the PC's, created and played by your friends and family.
You as the Game Master guide them through the story, have them face obstacles and take on the roles of every other character they meet.
>>

>>26822815

>>26823043
I dount it, again the things is being designed by a 3rd party. The guy doing it seems to be a fan of the show and not a brony, which is important. A fan of the show would try to keep things in line with the tone of the show, and he's designing it with his young daughter in mind. A brony would try to 'push the boundary' like some edgy motherfucker and try to pass stuff off through hasbro, which they would most likely not sign off on.

>>26823120
That's exactly right. I am going to have to get used to that.

>>26823237
You're missing the point of an RPG bro. You aren't taking control of the mane6. You are playing your own original characters.

>>26823623
I think you don't get it. This is a pen-and-paper rpg, it's all about what the gamemaster is controlling. Whether or not the mane6 are romanceable is entirely up to the guy running the game. This isn't a vidya.
>>
>>26823623
... are you thinking this is a computer game?

Look, it's simple. Are you running the game? If so, do you want them to be romancable. If not, then no they're not romancable.
>>
>>26823623
>not knowing how RPGs work
If a character is included in the game, the GM should be prepared for that character to be romanced
>>
Fuck, if i were running a game I would take it as far from the mane6 and ponyville as I possibly could. There are other places in equestria, other players that need friendship. The mane6 can't be everywhere at once.
>>
>>26823718
Yeah, there's enough other places and groups that you can have fun.

Wonderbolts, SMILE, explorers, settlers, soldiers. Plenty of options, even ignoring alternate timelines.

>exploding hoof mechanic
HAHAHAHA that's gold.

For those of you not in the know, he is punning the 'exploding dice' mechanic common in a lot of pnp RPGs and tabletop wargames.

The way it works is when you roll the maximum on a dice, you roll again and add the result, or something similar.

So for example, say i roll and 8 sided die (d8) and roll an 8, i roll again and get a 6, meaning my total roll is 14, meaning I just rolled a 14 on an 8 sided dice. It can get pretty exciting often times in a lot of games and it's a cool mechanic.

With this game he explained that you roll the next dice up and add the results. So back to the d8 example, i roll an 8, so i get to roll a d10 (10 sided dice), and get a 9, meaning I just rolled 17 with my skill check.
>>
>>26823969
Nerds play this stuff, not geeks. Know the difference.
>>
Why OCs though? Aren't there pre-made character sheets of the canon characters?
>>
>>26824399
That doesn't appear to be the intent of this. Make your own pony characters and play them in this world. It's the spirit of roleplaying games.

I'm sure they may have stats for the mane6 and other characters, but that's for the gamemaster to use as the players interact with them.
>>
>>26824399
Maybe? Or I guess you can rp as Applejack if you want to and the GM allows it.
But usually in pnp rpgs you make up your own characters.
>>
>>26824399
Well, you can run a game with canon characters; whether the mane six, backgrounders, or toy only characters, or whatever.

But part of the fun of RPGing is to tell your own stories, about different characters.

>>
I'm a total virgin to pnp games, but I want to learn how they work, and want to create a story for one, where do I start?
>>
>>26829620
Okay, this depends on a couple of things.

What sort of game do you want? Fantasy, sci-fi, modern day?
Any particular themes? Heroic, espionage, horror?

Do you want something with a lot of hard and detailed rules, or something less defined and more flexible?

Dice or no dice?
>>
>>26824360
I don't think that's his explanation. I think it's that, if you rolled the maximum on your dice, you can roll the next dice and chose which number you want to use instead. So, say, you used d8 and got 8, you can then roll d10. On your d10 you get 5 so you use your first roll, obviously. Unless I'm completely mistaken.
>>
>>26829861
That's how I understood it as well.

>>26829620
Hm, well they all work differently, but just imagine that whichever kind of story you're writing, it's up to your players how it unfolds.
>>
>>26829620
The easy part will be to learn the mechanics. Find the system you want to use, read the core mechanic bit, make a couple of characters to get a feel for it, and generally play around with it. If you are going to be the GM (the one who is telling the story and running the game), then also look into the mechanics or doing random things like climbing, hang gliding, whatever you can think of.

Creating and telling the story is a bit more artistic than scientific. Best piece of advise I can give you on that one is "Don't plan too much, all you need is the framework for the idea. The players will fill in the rest." Oh, and be ready to improvise. Players have a habit of thinking of something you won't. Roll with it and see where it goes. Some of my favorite stories started like that.

It's a pen and paper game. How are you going to force people to pay for something that can easily be houseruled in?

If you want to play an alicorn, just play an alicorn. There will be thousands of people writing additional rules for this shit. You can houserule batponies, dragons and diamond dogs in too, if you want. D&D is all about imagination. If you let yourself be limited by the rulebook, you probably wouldn't have fun playing anyway.
>>
>>26830202
tone?

Do you even know what a tabletop game is?
>>
>>26830217
What does houseruled mean? I'm still learning.
>>
>>26830823
Making up your own rules or tweaking offical rules to fit your personal playstyle.
>>
>>26830823

House rules = altering existing rules to fit group preferences (e.g. everyone forced to play an earth pony in a campaign)

Homebrew = adding in content not part of the original ruleset to expand the game (new items, monsters, races, classes, etc)
>>
>>26830823
House Rules are rules developed for specific locals. i.e. the place where you're playing. They're not universal, and are not official.

For example, when playing monopoly, when you pay a tax, you return the money to the bank.
However, a common house ruling is that the money instead goes into the centre of the board, and that the next person to land on Free Parking can then take it.

... because people think making monopoly even longer is apparently fun?

So, if you wanted to play a griffon, but there aren't any official rules, you can create some house rules for playing one (Presumably based on the rules for pegasi)

>>26830872
Homebrew falls under house rules.
>>
