Shining should give a blowjob to Blueblood to apologize
>>
>>26790880
ShiningArmorIsAGoddamnMoron/10

In all seriousness, it was about what I expected. Having Shining play the idiot was unfortunate, and as usual the turnaround happened considerably later in the story leaving almost no time for the wrap-up. I consider those more faults of the limited space FF issues have, though.

What turned out especially well, though, is that Blueblood's tactics make actual sense. There was no deus ex magica or spontaneous bit of knowledge he happened to hold that the audience would have no way of knowing. The tricks he used on the Yaks feel like things he would be using every day in his doings in Canterlot. They well-reflected his personality - I mean, one of the tricks is pretty much 'make fun of those plebians who aren't up to our standards' - and didn't seem at all out of place. Blueblood may be a selfish prick, but he's not a stupid selfish prick - and that difference means a lot.

It's also interesting to consider the implications of GM Berrow book lore showing up in comics.
>>

I want to see the ponies visit Monocolt from Celestia's book. No Second Prances has a chance of it, but I'll take a comic appearance if it's not in the show.

8/10. Blueblood felt sanitized and I think the story was a little too kind to him/harsh on SA but it still is the only acceptable comic in a long time.

Yeah, his character was really well done in this issue. He may be a cunt, but he still knows how to use that very same behavior for his advantage.

Well, they already have GM Berrow on board for memetastic shitisodes
>>
As awful as I expectd, Blueblood literally had no character and they still managed to do something contrived and fuck it all up. The best thing I can say about this as usual is that atleast it's not canon.
>>
>>26791223

Let me guess, you come from here

https://derpiboo.ru/1111752
>>
>>26791237

I simply posted my thoughts in the two sites I frequent at the same time. Why do you find that worthy of pointing out?
>>
They basically replaced Blueblood with Twilight. Him getting along with the yaks so easily was dumb, and the way he got along with them didn't even make much sense.
>>
Not surprised something by Whitley is another 4/10. Shining Armor is even more boring here than in the show for fucks sake.
>>
>>26791302
Well, here you are on 4chan, so what do you know about being popular
>>
>>26791302

Worse than that, they imply Blueblood is friends with Pinkie Pie. There is no way he would be able to stand or function around here.
>>
>>26791303
Takes talent. He basically had to have him do nothing in order for his completely OOC depiction of Blueblood to work. Blueblood was basically a Marty Stu here.

There was no conflict not easily de-fused by him easily, and very little conflict between him and SA that wasn't just BB being smug. Hence it's very boring.

Would have been better if they had to work together to figure out diplomacy and deal with each other's quirks rather than have Blueblood be perfect at the start and have Shining Armor basically do nothing.
>>
>>26791341

I wouldn't even say "would have been better", I'd say would have been decent period, because anything is better than this.
>>
>>26791348
Again, the problem comes with Blueblood suddenly being totally fine. I feel like if the show handled this plot, a lot of it would be Shining Armor trying to damage control both himself AND Blueblood for constantly unintentionally or intentionally offending the yaks, and Shining Armor fights with him. And then Blueblood does something that's a part of his typical smug/uppity self that the yaks like, and Shining Armor realizes what's going on and gets him to act like that more.

I just feel like it would result in both of them learning a better lesson than this.
>>
>>26791375

Unlikely, the current show would just mess it up in the same way of the comics, terrible writers nowadays, the retarded way they handled Glimmer's redemption proves it. But yes your idea does sound much better, Whitley is still awful.
>>
>>26791395
Still rather surprising that a guy who got so triggered that the teenage dragons (presented as a gag, a bunch of flat archetypes meant to give the story some conflict) were used to represent one race but didn't feel the need to do that with yaks, also used the same.

Him solving diplomatic issues with speciesist jokes also was rather odd.
>>
>>26790830
It takes skill to shatter paper.
>>
>>26791414

Nothing surprising about lack of consistency from a bad writer, they can't keep a train of thought running without derailing it.
>>
>>26790880
8.5/10
Maybe a little predictable, but this was actually an enjoyable appearance for both Blueblood and the Yaks. I smiled through the whole issue

Fleecs does need to stop putting his dumb OCs in every comic he draws.
>>
>>26791427
I think it's more his really dumb headcanons about Dragon Quest that influenced him to write that, but it's still astounding that after doing all of that he feels like he can present a character doing something racist based on stereotypes as a positive thing.
>>
>>26791414

Dragons are nigger like his daugther, yaks are sandniggers
>>
>>26791375

I'll have to disagree here, this comic's focus is to teach Shining Armor a lesson and Celestia clearly paired him with Blueblood on purpose so that he would be less hesitant on learning stuff about a royal life, that is why the story has Blueblood talking to him twice about being royalty/lineage.

They could've interacted more yes, but Blueblood being displayed as good with his royal duties even though he is a pony of noble upbringing is meant precisely to show Shining Armor that all kind of ponies can bring something valuable to the table.

The way Whitley did it isn't perfect, but it's on the right track for the message he wanted. Displaying Blueblood as mostly positive was needed for that, specially since FF comics have so few pages compared to the serials or episodes of the show have in airtime.
>>
I want to fuck Prince Blueblood really hard up his anus hole.
>>
>>26790873
9/10. This is the FF issue I'm looking forward to read. It CONCENTRATES on those two characters.
It's also surprising to see, that Blueblood is not an asshole. He just loves to be vain when it's possible, not all the time.
>>
>>26790873
This was actually...fun? And good?
Like, an actually fun and good IDW MLP comic issue? What year is it, 2013?

8.5/10.
>>
I still can't get over Twilight and Spike. I mean this is 10/10 material and they blew it hard.
>>
>>26790953
This.
>>
>>26791693
Even Ted Anderson basically said that the story doesn't matter. Seriously. He thinks it's the best he's ever done but admits you don't have to see it as important or canon.

He's delusional if he thinks he's a good writer. He needs to stick to his day job of being a tape jockey at a public middle school in Minnesota, not writing comics.

Sanitized from what? The only time we've seen him is when he was blowing off an admitted golddigger.
>>
>>26790873

Actually one of the best comics IDW has done lately. No shilling. Honest 8/10.
>>
>>26790964

Stuff from the GM Berrow books has shown up in the actual show, so why not?
>>
>>26790880
9/10, best comic in a long time
>>
>>26791791
I don't know, he's just working too well as a diplomat and has none of his trademark smugness when interacting with them. I would have thought it would have been a bigger struggle for him. Guess not because he's apparently a master diplomat.
>>
>>26791302

Makes sense to me. Most ponies are all about assimilating, while Blueblood isn't. He was different, he acted differently (but generously), and subtly indicated points where the yaks were gleefully giving him concessions because he was letting them feel superior.

Blueblood may be a snob, but he's apparently A+ at making other races feel like they're tops even if he doesn't feel that way personally.
>>
>>26791887
Does this surprise you?

Used cars salesmen are sleazy but they don't act like that to customers.
>>
>>26791871

chapter with celebrities aren't canon
>>
>>26791899
See I feel like we missed a major point. It's hard to go from The Best Night Ever to this. Maybe if he acted like he did in that episode at the start and BECAME that over the course of the diplomatic attempts it would be better.

As it stands we see no reason why he suddenly is like this other than that he suddenly is the go-to diplomat for Celestia.
>>
>>26790908

>Christian Rice (Writer) • Agnes Garbowska (Artist)

Great, another yawnfest comic
>>
>>26791915
best night ever is only seen through the context of his interactions with rarity, who he had good reason to blow off like he did.
>>
>>26791375

Honestly, we have one point where Blueblood is a total ass to show his character in the show. The whole thing with the Gala and Rarity. Every other point in the show he's shown up has been a non-speaking part- which if you can give a reasonable reason why he's an ass to Rarity (I mean, seriously, she's gold-digging hardcore) the rest is wide open.

>>26791414

My neighbor when I was a kid was a Spanish diplomat (I lived near Wash DC), and they'd have big-ass BBQs where they'd invite the cul-de-sac and guests from other embassies.

The shit you'd hear from the non-local adults after a few beers was basically /pol/ level shitting on anyone they both could agree on saying were shit-tier national neighbors or collectively far enough away from both to get away with it.

Off the official records, that's exactly what they do when schmoozing around.
>>
>>26791929
I love Garbowska's Spike, because his cuteness gives me a heart attack.
>>
>>26791933
Yes but I'm just saying it's disorienting. This isn't the Blueblood we saw in the episode. It's fine if he's something different at the end of this comic, but the story is stronger if you actually show development for him.

Just my feeling, but it was rather boring to see a fully "reformed" Blueblood just show up and deal with SA.

>>26791944
It's just odd coming from Mr. #dragonlivesmatter.
>>
>>26791956
Is he really reformed? He's still fairly self absorbed, it just doesn't impact his work.

Are you really surprised that a politician might behave one way publicly and another behind closed doors? Besides, Bluebloods flaws don't even make him a bad person, just mildly annoying.
>>
>>26791956

I wouldn't call him fully reformed. He fucks around with the Empire's throne room, has exactly the right attitude to tick common-stallion Shining off the whole way, and worst/best of all, he's actually good at what he came to do, all while letting SA look like a bumpkin.

That he's good at what he does puts Best Night Ever into Blueblood subtly and repeatedly hosing Rarity (who, being an EoH can't be directly blown off without causing an incident) until she flips her shit in mid-Gala, leaving him safely free of an overobsessive fanmare and still smelling like a rose in Canterlot society.

Fancy as Rarity is, she's really not ever going to be "old rich", she'll at best be "new rich" even though she'll have her fame and fortune as a successful artist-businessmare. After all, when you can manage your fashion line into having shops in the capital and the biggest city in Equestria, you're upper class, just not *ahem* rare and gentrified.
>>
>>26790900
Nice.
>>
>>26792009

Pretty much my thoughts, he did his job but he's still a rather deliberate asshole. He flat out says he's faking to care about the yaks in his "guide" page.

>a comic is actually good enough to get mixed to okay reception instead of universally negative
How long has it been since we've had a comic that was okay enough for that? At least 6 or so months I think.
>>
>>26792108

I think half of it is that Blueblood and Shining Armor are characters that barely do anything in the show, so there's nothing to contradict here.
>>

>>
>>26791871
Fair point, though I think it's one thing to see an offhand reference from one of the books making it into the show and quite another to see alicorn backstory crossing over. Mind you, it's also crossing over to the "we can contradict it in the show if we choose to" comics, so the impact also isn't as high.

9/10, minus one point for a bit of rehashing the Party poop episode. But overall the message was good. You can have 2 people from different caste(poor/rich or worker class/nobility) and it doesn't mean that one is worse than the other. Everyone is good at something.

Whitley already referenced Journal of Two Sisters, he apparently also read Berrow books. Reference to them doesn't mean they are canon or that Hasbro forces them. It was just out of his good will that they were referenced since he reads them to his daughter.

It's funny because I was very lenient with what Celestia did in Reflections and found a way to rationalize her choices. But this issue broke the ponies back. It was simply retarded and made me head-canon Larson and Faust's idea for Spike's upbringing even harder.
>>
>>26793488
That idea being?
>>
>>26793531
Spike grew up in the palace and was tended to by palace staff. He and Twilight did not grow up together.

One day, presumably after Twilight finished her formal school studies, Celestia decided to reunite the two, sensing that they belonged together in some way (remember she has that limited premonitions). At the start of the show, their relationship is that of cordial working buddies, not close friends. They then become best friends as the series progresses.
>>
It is a pretty fucking messed up world we live in where a story about Twilight and Spike ends up shit while a Shitley story about Shining Armor and Blueblood ends up good.

Better start gunning for the flying pigs that exist now.

Characters don't matter, it's the writer that determines if their good or not.

Batman or Spiderman aren't inherently entertaining characters. That's why if you read comics you follow the writer/artist, not the titles.

>>26793819

But the writer is a bad writer in this case too, which makes the fact he did decently all the more baffling.

Your misremembering that Whitley has had plenty of good issues in the past.

His only major sins have been the dragon issue and the Sombra arc, one due to social justice and the other because he made the fanboy mistake of thinking just because a villain has a tragic backstory it means he has to be redeemed so we can root for him.

Shit, that was actually kinda fun. You'd think they'd ruin a one-off character from the series but they managed it pretty well.

I still kinda noticed that they retreaded alot on the Yak episode if not in words, in the episode's lesson.

Also it was pretty funny. Art was alright though it might be because Mr. Manjaws didn't look silly because the main characters were dudes.

Blueblood's going to make Equestria great again.
>>
>>26794455
If Rarity and Fancypants had a daughter...
>>
>>26793836
Both Whitley and Anderson have done some bad issues in the past. Sometimes it's the setting, sometimes it's the character pairings but when they have pretty nice issues as well.

The latter is just a horrible human being on his own.
>>
>>26794463

I think the major difference is that Party Pooped was about not trying to catter to somebody but to show them your good aspects.

This was more about "you can learn different things from different people if you look beyond", they made it pretty obvious with repeating that Shining Armor was at his core working class and Blueblood was at his core a royal.

Surprisingly good lesson, in fact I'd say Iike it better than Party Pooped's. It feels more in line with a series about personal relationships.
>>
>>26794486
Oh, both are disgusting human beings. Only the former can actually manage to write decently on occasion. I think Blueblood/SA is an exception to the rule and even then not really.
>>
>>26794500
I think it's two different lessons that are both pretty important. Learning to not patronize people but rather show them the best of what you can do, not what you think they want, is important.

Honestly I think Party Pooped did it better. I don't know why everyone just suddenly buys Blueblood working so well with the yaks when he's not even doing anything that Shining Armor couldn't do.

In fact, he's actually doing the EXACT thing that Pinkie/Twilight realized that they had to do in Party Pooped: not patronize them and show them the best of pony culture. Maybe that's why it's odd to me. The only difference is the casual racism mixed in.
>>
>>26794500
and the way the comic handled Blueblood. It's like making a genuinely nice asshole readable. At least he isn't the butt of the joke in this issue. That would've made it worse.
>>
>>26794531

Not really, the focus of the story is never on what Blueblood does, but on the fact that he does. Even though Shining Armor repeatedly assumed he couldn't due to his own bias and attachment to his own upbringing at the end he saw that somebody he deemed snobby or uptight was exactly what was needed.

It's not a story about how to make yaks happy, it's a story about different classes. You are much more likely to meet somebody from a different upbringing than you are at trying to make contact with a different tribe, I think it's a more down to earth story, in fact I'd say I'm sure it is since it's one I've experienced personally.

TL;DR The yak diplomacy is just the backbone, the excuse for Shining Armor and Blueblood to even be out together in first place, in Party Pooped it's the backbone for Pinkie to feel inadequate, but the focus is pretty different I'd say.
>>
>>26794603
> the excuse for Shining Armor and Blueblood to even be out together in first place

In that case, we don't see very much development between them.

If you're going to bring personal experiences into it, I identify with the one about patronizing people but could see this one. I don't know. It's a story that's really good on the surface but not if you dig into it.

I think in Party Pooped it's both to develop Pinkie AND to teach the lesson about patronizing. It's just kinda odd to see Blueblood basically do what Twilight and Pinkie did at the end of Party Pooped the second he takes charge.
>>
>>26792862
You arn't serious right? That shits a complement. As in "damn bro, good job on getting that fine ass bitch".
>>
>>26794626

That is wrong, we do see clear development for Shining Armor who starts it dismissing Celestia's plan as foolish and Blueblood as useless and ends it admiting that his bias lead nowhere. Blueblood doesn't, but he's not the main character of it, he is the contrast and the example, he's not the "Pinkie" of the story, he is the contrast to Shining Armor's belief.

Unrelated to my point but honestly Pinkie's development in party pooped is kinda eh for me since we already had a story about her losing her mojo, it's just this time they used it for "dont patronize" instead of "don't get sad weird al stole your thunder", but the emotional cycle and stakes is the same. It's not new grounds for her.

And Blueblood didn't really do what Pinkie and Twilight did honestly. He bought the yaks with presents by researching their companionships, he brought griffon food to have a third party they could both antagonize, he sweet-talked them into believing him kind until he could put their prince on the spot and take the advantage of the situation to snag out of him a trade deal.

Pinkie and Twilight showed the yaks pony culture to amuse them during a visit, Blueblood emotionally manipulated them and crafted situations for conversation to gain political higher ground.

>Compliment one's booty

Nigga, you've been reading ntr on /tv/ for too long.
>>
>>26794698
I'm glad someone else got this out of the comic, I realised pretty early on (the page where BB is offering SA to ride in the litter, and the guards are super cool about it, and when he makes sure that his guards will have good accommodations during their stay) that this would be a lesson about how you may not like some people who come from a different background and maybe rub you the wrong way, but that doesn't mean they are bad or that they can't teach you a thing or two. Also as usual, assumptions are wrong m'kay.
>>
>>26794698
and we doubted Princess Celestia giving half the job of being a diplomat to Blueblood.
>>
>>26794698
The contrast to Shining Armor's belief is given such a contrived setup for him to be successful, though. It's not even hard for him.

I guess I just wanted a different lesson to be told.
