He never came back did he.

Rest in piece 3DAnon, Ships, everyone. We loved you, and we await your return.
Dedicated to all those brave artfags who dared to bring MLP into the third dimension. And to those who silently carry the torch. The ones who looked at SFM and demanded better. Rest is Pieces friends.

>I'm ever dead
>The ride ever ends

Actually, I do have a big project underway. I'm working on a fancy promo for the /mlp/ 4cc team.
I got a workflow for pulling assets out of PES, so I can animate things in blender that can't be captured in game and all that. For example, here are some /mlp/ players: puu sh/nGwds.mp4

I expect this will take a long while, but I want it for summer. As well, I'll be helping Ved for the summer intro, which we aim to make the best yet as it is the 5th anniversary.

RIP my dear 3D-MLP

or not. I worked on my old ponymodels recently and want to take this chance to share it with you:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/obbhf31m4r3xz0a/PonyCreator.rar

There are a lot of changes; different materials, new shape keys, slightly different modifiers and i added hair physics and a script for all.

The idea here is to create your own Pony with a choice of 5 different hair types, horn and wings.

If you're bored give it a shot and tell me what you think.
>>26763180
I especially would like to get feedback from you 3dAnon
>>

>>26764726
Goddamn it I love you guys.
>>
>>26764726
I love the range of facial expression and the eye rig. Feels great to work with. As well, the wings are done quite well, with a good transition from folded to open. The only things I really notices were the hair lagging behind the model due to cyclic dependencies somewhere, and the middle joint in the rear legs tends to look a little strange when the legs are moved too much. This feels a good bit more polished then your previous rigs, so these are really shaping up well.

Thanks! The foot is pretty angled at the time of impact, about 50 degrees. Not quite a toe punt, but it does look that way from this angle. I agree it is not too smooth, mainly the feet need a little roll and such while weight is shifting around I think. I might fix those issues later, but then again this was more of a rigging test I suppose.

I did see that there's a bit of an angle, but that rather makes it even worse at that position. Ideally the full side of the shoe/foot should be used to get the best ball control. If it's supposed to be a particularly hard/fast shot, using the entire top of the foot (where the horn is on the shoe) would be a likely choice. A proper toe punt would also work for that since there's a lot of power, but the ball is very hard to control then.

I assumed it was just a test, but if you're going to put all this effort into this project, then proper footwork would be good to have. It's football after all. :^)

Thanks in advance for all the awesome stuff and hard work in any case, looking forward to Summer.

I CTRL-F'ed /mlp/ with "3d" every 3 - 4 days since the general died. I tried reviving it once or twice but it didn't stick around for 100 posts. I'm not dead at all, and would gladly finish some animations I've been doing, although my plan was to move on to Maya and other shit and actually create a career for myself in animation. Once I git gud, obviously. What motivates me to make pone is the 3D-General that also creates content, but since it's been dead for about half a year now I haven't really been able to muster the will to open my files and do stuff. I'd love to do shit in Photoshop again, or make animemes for reposting, but once again my motivation for pone comes directly from you guys. I've opened my software every once in a while to do small shit and keep myself fresh, so if this stays alive I might be able to crank some shit out upon request like I once did. What made the general survive before was 3Danon's big projects, so we probably need something like that again because I assume this is how most people get motivated too.

Also, it feels strange to see others post my stuff.
Maybe next I'll finish this piece of shit.

Eh, the content in this thread just takes too long to produce anon.

Even when we tried having only weekly threads we could barely get about 150 posts that were actually related to 3D content. The barrier to entry for 3D art is really high.

That's not to say that we wont keep posting every now and then.

I only made the OP as dramatic as it is because I was just expecting it to be a dumping place for old stuff. I know that we're right smack dab in the middle of the spring semester, and that's the busiest time of year for most of us.

>pic related
is the shit I've been working on for the better part of five hours. Shit takes time man.

I know that normally we only get well bumped threads once someone like 3Danon or Ships has actually finished a project, and needs the render team to come together.

Is 3D animation easier than 2D?
>>
>>26779801
no, you have to deal way more shit
>>
>>26779805
Are the skills interchangeable or it's a completely different process?
How is the learning curve? and do you need talent for it?
>>
>>26779801
Fuck no. Even with interpolation to help with making smooth movements, 2D is still a bit simpler. 3D has too much shit going on.
>>26779824

Honestly, for a 2D video to be made it could only require maybe 2 people. One guy who can do sound stuff and video editing, and the animator who draws everything. He can do storyboards, tweening, all that shit because if he can draw worth a damn it's all in the same medium. 3D on the other hand requires someone who is experienced in creating models, environments, proper lighting, materials, rigging, and then animation (probably majority of the work), sound, and then editing and an extensive rendering process. 2D also doesn't have to worry about what's going on behind the character, while 3D needs to take into account an extra dimension of motion at all times since they don't have the convenience of drawing the side currently facing the camera. All of this is not to say 2D is easy, but I personally think 3D requires a bit more to properly do.

But the principles of 3D animation and 2D animation are exactly the same. 2D is more of 'ye ol art' form of thing, but 3D is more technical in how you control your character and your scene. The learning curve is steep, and you don't really need to be someone born into it to do it. Having a background in animation helps, but all of the principles of animation are learnable from pleb to pro. It'll take a while to learn, but it's worth it.
>>
>>26779824
A lot of 2d animators went to 3d in the late 90's. As long as you have artisic ability, knowledge of animation principles, a good learning resource and patience, you'll be able to obtain your goal. It's not an easy road, but it's certainly feasible
>>
>>26779824
Its completely different, there are stuff you need to worry about besides just making it to 3d.
A basic form of animation you have a model, a scene, and movement.

In 3d, there are more extra steps. After, you made the model you have to rigg it. For the scene you must set the gravity or simulate physics and for moment you cant cheapen/hide frames everything has to be set in a certain fame.

These are just some examples.

You need more discipline. Doing shit that you don't want to do to or when you don't feel like doing it is a sign of getting gud.

If you get inspired by others giving you attention then you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

If that's your attitude, just leave.
>>
>>26779936
>giving attention
no, senpai, it's not about wanting attention. I do need more discipline to be able to finish things without others, but I didn't think "I-I can be the cool guy on an anime image board, notice me!". I did pone because it was fun to make and I liked contributing to this thread because it's better than the 140 greentext bumpfests, so it was essentially a bit of light in this cesspool of shit called /mlp/. This also helps me understand Blender better while I use other programs for other things and allows me to challenge myself when people make requests. There are plenty other things people can do if they simple want (You)s, you know.

>>

>If you get inspired by others giving you attention then you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

What exactly do you mean by this? If there's no fanbase for a certain kind of content, why would an artist create those things when they can create other stuff that would get them noticed more? This is in the grand scheme of things. I'm not sure how many artists will spend weeks or months painting murals that people find uninteresting because that stuff doesn't pay the bills and only adds more stress onto the artist. That's not to say people can't do things because they love doing them, but I believe there's more to being an artist than the fun of it, especially when they live in places where money is required to do anything, which in turn requires their art to be noticed, which also means they need to make stuff that people would like to see, completing the circle. None of that would be possible if artists didn't want attention to their work.

>>
>>26780350
Are you going to give an actual reply to the rest of my post? Doing costly creations with no need of attention doesn't support a living, even if you love doing it. Attention to art is a necessity. While it shouldn't be the driving force, it is needed to survive as an artist. What counter is there to this?
>>
>>26780323
Thanks
>>26780327
No, don't worry. I just prefer sfm [[IMO]] because it feels easy to use (which probably is) and it has a nice art palette, the style of which it is created can be either funny or serious, same could be said for any other but the main reason i like sfm it's just less work. No need to construct scenery, no need to build models (I admire the people who do that though, A+ for hard work and effort.) or do any numerous photoshops and imports/exports.

I'm not a pro, i just think it's more fun to use SFM.
This is all with in my opinion of course.

Zozzle, I'm hueing at Brasil's own macaroni.
>>
>>26780391
Sure.

I find your statement is to be incredibly naïve - you're essentially saying "If there's no fanbase, why create a certain product?". Why'd Van Gogh bother creating The Starry Night if it had no target audience? Your argument completely snuffs creativity and ultimately defeats the purpose of art itself. Why create anything new if we just play it safe pander to people's tastes?

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt by assuming you're only referring to technical art here, and not traditional arts as "What is the point of art?" is a whole other philosophy question. In short, works of arts aren't simply made to obtain attention - they're about sharing your passion, culture, ideas and dreams with the world. You're not doing it for the people, you're doing it for yourself, and when your passion is conveyed in your works, it will shine and people will understand and respect it. That's is what art is.

>Doing costly creations with no need of attention doesn't support a living. I'm not sure how many artists will spend weeks or months painting murals that people find uninteresting because that stuff doesn't pay the bills

There is a difference between art as a hobby and a full-time job as an artist. Everyone need a source of income, but that doesn't mean that original works are irrelevant. In terms of 3D - a creative industry - do you really expect to make a living by making fanart based on intellectual properties you don't even own? If a potential employer views your portfolio they'll be way more impressed by the creations that show your original concepts and ideas.

>>26779936 is right. If you have no drive for your passion beyond a circlejerk general, then what's the point of perusing it? Passion is not some scarf you take out the wardrobe to occasionally wave at people; it should be part of you. What use are skills if you can only be arsed to summon them to impress others?

Your worth as an artist is not determined by the number of (You)'s you get.

>>

It really is a shame that so few fan artists or game developers share their source files. I've ranted about this all before, but there is simple no excuse, let alone good reason, to not do so.

For all practical purposes, the SFM ponies have become the standard for almost all 3d ponies, so there is almost every character out there already made or readily created. I suppose they aren't well suited to non-SFM, and are of dubious quality compared to other models.

I suppose the answer to your question is that we didn't have all that many people who could actually model well enough to make something that large and consistent with enough quality to beat what already exists.

Not hard at all. Either git gud and learn what cracks are, or learn what open source is.

When you render in a render engine like Cycles it does passes on the model through light sampling - basically, how much light the camera gets reflected from the light source, or something like that. The more samples = the less noise = a much longer rendertime.

Looks closely on the image and you will see speckles that make it non-uniform, that's the noise I'm referring to.

You know she's going down soon. Shit's getting uglier and uglier for PT with each passing day.

I just can't comprehend why they're didn't accept those phone calls as decisive evidence yet.

how can they blush even if there is fur on their cheeks?

Clearly the hairs on ponies are actually strands of tiny LCD screens that can change color.

I'm starting to dislike the wonkyness of this rig to be quite honest, family. I can't even make the newest dank without: 1, the eyebrows not allowing the eyes to close fully and 2, the thumbs.

>those individual hair strands
Maybe this isn't as impressive as it looks, but if it is, I must ask what time frame did you make this in, because its simply amazing.

I've worked for about 20 hours by this point, though that includes finding reference images and other distractions. A lot of the hairs are placed by the computer, but I still control about 8000 hairs that define behavior of the generated hairs.
