Honestly I had an idea for an episode that basically goes like this:

>Succession crisis in the kingdom, no heir to the throne because the king's son was lost, leadership of bands disunited

>Spike arrives, treated like shit for being around ponies
>Some dragons stop and listen to him, begin to like it
>Take him to king, who looks familiar
>Eventually Celestia comes on scene and reveals how her scouts found a dragon egg

It would be too similar to the Griffins now. Also spike does not have a cutie mark so he can not get called to go places by the map, which is weird because he has his own throne.
Perhaps a combination of both ideas would turn out pretty good. He shows up in the dragon lands and is treated like shit and is shown no respect despite all of his best efforts.
He would then finally leave having felt like he didn't actually accomplish anything which would confuse him until much later when his efforts actually bear fruit. I think it would just be interesting to see a story that doesn't resolve itself right away.

I still kind of like the idea that ponies kept trying to say stuff but dragons wouldn't give them the time of day to even say anything because it typically never means good news when ponies show up.
And then of course the one time Celestia basically had an "in" to a large group of dragons where they could learn the truth? I was trying to set it up as something that would give Spike a future. By helping to lead a rebellion to remove the king, he'd have to take his place as the king right away. He wouldn't learn anymore lessons and he would be away from his pony friends.
Nope, what I think would happen is that he ends up convincing the king dragon, regardless of whether or not he's actually related by blood to Spike, to change his ways. Because of his inspiration of his kind and the role he took in bringing about peace, he would be crowned prince and be the heir to the throne.
Of course, that would be a long time away, and he has a lot of life to live and a lot of experiences to make before that. Dragonkind will already have been better with the new kind king on the throne, who welcomed friendship into his rule of previously disunited and bickering tribes.
