The way I see it, they're mostly pony-like creatures.
They have four limbs, two eyes, mouths with lips, muzzles, tails, etc. They don't even seem to have a proper exoskeleton aside from the carapace on their backs.
The insect-ish features are largely superficial, the only really prominent ones being their wings and carapace. Maybe their eyes too, although they're just unclear and not clusters of little beads like on flies.
Rather than "insects" I'd just call them "monsters".
