Oh yeah, the animation is clearly lacking in comparison to S5, but even in S2 you can already see some improvements.
Remember when we were blown away by the animation in The Failure Song in S3E1? Or even the depth of field effect in Putting Your Hoof Down. Good stuff.

Allow me to update you on the lingo
Liking anything past S2, sometimes past MMC, including EqG: Hasdrone
Preferring S1 or S2 more than later seasons, or somewhat disliking anything past S2, sometimes past MMC: Faustfag
By not liking S1's animation you are now labelled as a hasdrone because you're clearly implying you like the animation in later seasons more.

Season 1 doesn't have bad animation at all. More of its costs up front went into making assets for the show, but the ones they made were competent and they did a lot of little things to remind you that the horses were horses. The backgrounds were also way less saturated - and while colorful may be pretty, in terms of general composition the later seasons' habit with over-saturation is usually discouraged.
As far as the general technical components the show's usually been pretty solid. It's just the writing and tone that's changed a lot.
