It's not confirmed if it will be a direct sequel, but it will be in the same universe. The difference is toby won't make a carbon copy game and release every 6 months for cash grab like FNAF does, you won't see the next one till later next year at the earliest most likely.

At this point the fandom is pretty much independent from the show, there is a reason why this board has been filled with fans of the fandom lately, there is a reason why even after so many bronies leaving the fandom itself doesn't seem to shrink, we are reaching a point where we don't need to show anymore, a point where people can survive entirely on fanworks rather than needing the show to produce content, and this board is no different, after so many years the majority of the fans grew tired of the show, but their interest in the world and its characters is not dead yet, so they stick around for fanfiction, i am not saying this is acceptable though, since show discussion is one of the pillars that holds this board together, and without it we would just be /vg/ with ponies where every thread is a small circlejerk, but this is all a natural transicion between "flavor of the month" and sonic levels

The more source material, better, as long as it is delivered in small portions to keep people interested without them burning all their autism on the first weeks, undertale is a good example of fad, there is just so much you can do with this game, but eventually the people making the content are going to grow tired of lack of new materials to work with, they will get bored and just leave, another game being released a year later wouldn't be as popular because those people would be already going apeshit over something else, however, if instead we got small blasts of content here and there, plus some "official" way of fanwork like mods or fanfiction, the fad would remain alive and well, this is the difference between minecraft and undertale, minecraft alone would never create the following it has today, but the mod community allowed creativity to grow and settle within the game, its the reason why its so fucking big today
