Time to watch another episode on our journey through the entirety of Friendship is Magic. Every Saturday and Sunday and a couple Fridays we are re-watching the series from its beginning, to remind ourselves of all the good times we had, up until the estimated time S6 will start.
Today's episode is Look Before You Sleep, one of the better acclaimed slice of life episodes out of the bunch. Written by Charlotte Fullerton, who then wrote Suited for Success, A Bird in the Hoof, May the Best Pet Win, Baby Cakes and Putting Your Hoof Down.

Cute episode, with nice and truthful moral. It's a little weird to see AJ and Rarara to argue so much at this point (I mean, after all these seasons, look how they interact in "Trade Ya!", fo example), and it's these nice episodes like that what helped to build such great friendship between mane 6.
While episodes with focus on "adventure" are helping with world-building, it's slice of life episodes mainly responsible for relashionships and character development. Probably, a nice balance of both is what I liked most about FiM as a whole. If anyone asked me about the appeal of this show, it's what my answer would be.

Yeah, it's great how they showed the ponies' friendships developing in season 1. It's not clear what all their relationships were before Twilight showed up besides Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, who we know were friends since childhood, and they probably all knew each other since Ponyville's a small town and they did all show up to Pinkie Pie's party, but it doesn't seem like they were a close-knit group until the Elements of Harmony thing. Rarity and Applejack certainly don't seem like they were friends before the series started, or even before this episode since we'd barely seen them interact before then.
It's also evident how early in the series this is by Twilight's enthusiasm for what she perceives as essential friendship activities coupled with a poor understanding of actual friendship (it seems to take her a while to figure out that Rarity and AJ aren't getting along). And as always, when faced with a situation she doesn't understand she falls back on books. Come to think of it, even her defeat of Nightmare Moon was mostly due to following information from books. But that's okay, bookhorse is adorable in this episode and doesn't even have that fuckboi Spike around to shit everything up.
The conflict between AJ and rarara in this episode is great of course, because it's not a matter of one of them wanting something perfectly reasonable and the other just being a bitch, it's a pretty subjective issue, although as a disgusting slob, I side more with Apple most of the time. And the way it's resolved, by showing that both of their points of view are valuable and complementary to each other really gets at one of the show's core themes about different types of people getting along.
Also I just realized the spooky story Twilight tells in this episode is the same one that terrifies Scootaloo in Sleepless in Ponyville, or at least similar.
So yeah, good episode.

Both AJ and Rarity have different voices. AJ's a bit higher pitch and it feels like Tabitha isn't pushing the accent as hard as she does lately. It's still clearly there when Rare goes full drama queen and such, but there are still bits where her speech is not accented as much. Play virtually any S5 episode with Rarity in it and almost every line is in that singsong tune and accent. Not that I exactly mind, but it's interesting to point out.

Looking back a lot has changed, everything feels more naive and innocent. Especially Twilight.
The animation itself is pretty interesting as it's not as polished, but it adds charm. I noticed Rarity's voice is different too, but it's not as jarring as AJ's voice (since I actually preferred her when she sounded higher, more feminine)

Twilight is perfect in LBYS. If anyone ever asked me why Twilight is called adorkable I would point him to this episode right away, because this is the damn definition of it.
That certain innocent and naïveté is what keeps me coming back to S1 over and over. I still watch and enjoy the new pony but you mostly won't get this feeling from them.

Also the plot makes no sense within the context.
It's about two different ponies having to become friends/work together in order to survive, but the action happens inside Twilight's library inside of Ponyville.
The plot would have made more sense if Rarity and Applejack got lost in the everfree forest and were forced to bond in order to survive. Which is kind of hinted at it by the tree fallong through the window of twilight's oak tree house.
Once again FIM's quality is hindered by the slice of life garbage.

Where are you getting that from? It's about two different ponies learning how to stand each other, cooperate and find a compromise. There's no hinting at survival, it's just that going outside means risking catching a cold/ruining their manes. Not everything has to be a life or death matter.
