You can also engine break with an automatic. If you do real mountain driving, you basically have to.
Some automatics also have a "manual" setting where you can specifically select which gear you want the transmission to be in more like an automatic. Pic related, the bit at the bottom to the right of D lets you select between 6 gears, though the vehicle itself does the switching, no need for a clutch. I drove a toyota tundra in the mountains of colorado, and it had 8 gears you could select between. Was nice to have good options for rolling down steep gravel roads at low speeds and a higher gear for interstate speeds. Just basically roll down the mountain without having to touch the brakes.Most lower end automatics only have L-2-3 selectable, and they kinda suck for going down hills at highway speeds

Pic related would probably use 1 for gravel roads, 2 for lower speed, and probably be fucked on a motorway.
