I've been thinking of running an MLP tabletop RPG. Any suggestions for fun systems? I'm sick to death of 3.x, including Pathfinder, and I'm looking for something that's compatible with the feel of the show. So, some magic, nothing grimdark, nothing excessively crunchy.

Any ideas since I don't want to get GR15b& on /tg?
>>
>>25791868
You could spend some time adjust Burning Wheel, though the system is quite a bit different than any d20 game. There is a simplified version call Mouse Guard that I personally love, but it has no magic. It wouldn't be overheard to mod it for ponies, though.
>>
>>25791868
Why not just run freeform rp? Gauge the likelihood of success of every action a character wants in percent then roll it on D100 or D20. Steal stats from your favourite system to guage strength dex, charisma ect if you want, but there is literally no point in buying and learning a new ruleset if your just going to cut it up to make it mlp comparable.

Burning Wheel sounds simple and speedy-playing. Do I have that right? I'm a player in a 3.5 campaign that's slow as molasses right now because the DM can't into combat without needing twelve boring-ass charts for every roll.

Some time ago a bunch of friends of mine had a savage worlds mlp game. I was busy most of the time so couldn't go, but it seemed to fit their needs.

I didn't even knew there are other systems besides Pathfinder. I can only wish you good luck on your quest and post ponies having P&P fun.

That said, there is some rare FEMTO:RPG threads sometimes, I don't now much about it though besides that it's a thing...I think.
>>
>>25791920
would also be happy to play in/help run/DM this if its online, have 6 years D&D experience and have played and DM'd many other systems, but D&D is my main as its generic and i can pick and choose rules that work as i am an obsessive rules chopper and streamliner so we can focus on characters not mechanics
>>
>>25791945
Never actually fucked with FEMTO RPG. That's like a super-simple system designed for being used in any setting, right?

>>25791920
This isn't a bad idea, but I suspect many players like the idea of halfway standardized power and difficulty. I'm more of a Story First kinda GM myself, so a lightweight system would be better for me than no system at all.

>>25791980
Mechanics are only good if they make the story and characters more fun, so I like your style.
>>
>>25792036
>so I like your style.
Thanks, a lot of people seem to agree, i run an RP night at my University, it was an elected position about who would take over from the last person as the person who organized it so must work for some folks haha

>>25791930

WHFRP is a d100 based system that's pretty fun, though it might not be your thing if you really hate charts (you'd have to homebrew the critical hit charts so that instead of the ponies losing limbs or exploding upon death, something cute happens instead). You'd also have to homebrew pony profiles for each pony race, and maybe change the names of some of the classes and magic. I always liked the magic channeling system in WHFRP
>>
>>25792068
>RP night at my University
Good man, it's important work to keep those little communities together. I might hit you up later, I'm pretty serious about trying to get this game off the ground.

>>25792081
How well does it handle non-combat? Left up to players to RP or does it have a lot of rules for it?
>>
>>25791868
I know you said that you're sick of Pathfinder. But you can always use Ponyfinder and just adapt it a bit, it provides a lot of pony stuff and you don't necessary need to go death and destruction.
>>
>>25792223
>off by one
But this.
>>
>>25792193

It's pretty loose as far as I know, mostly up to the players. They can roll stuff like Bluff and Fellowship to sway NPCs, but as the DM you can assign difficulty ratings based on how well the players RP (so like a +40% bonus if they give a really convincing speech or something, or you can just forgo the roll entirely if it's plausible)
>>
>>25792223
>>25792243
I already picked up Ponyfinder, actually. I realized pretty quickly that a lot of the content was designed to integrate pony races into a pre-existing fantasy world, and in a world where everyone is already a pony (i.e. Equestria) they stop being relevant. I thought all the dieties and NPCs were pretty underwhelming (why use expy Celestia and Luna when you can have the real thing).

I could just go Pathfinder, but I don't like having to either deal with the massive amount of power bloat that the universe of supplements give or arbitrarily restricting the expansions people use.

>>25792281
Grabbing that and Mouse Guard from /tg/ archives, thanks m80s.

I'm actually starting to lean toward Ironclaw, which is normally a >furry system set in Renaissance Europe, but allows flexible, intuitive character customization (career system rather than class), has an interesting mechanic for dice (skills add dice to a pool), and deals very well with a non-combat heavy game.

>>25793085
>being a memester
I actually love CoC, especially the non-d20 version, but I want to run a pony game that's only slightly darker than the show.
>>
>>25793085
CoC has a great system for universalization. Just pick your skills and roll d100 for everything.

Honestly though, I find that the best system is to go as rules light as possible. Rules slow down the game. Let me describe what I consider to be the best RPG system:

1) When a player describes what they want to do, roll a die, ignore the result, and do whatever is best for the plot.

2) If you want to create dramatic tension, tell a player to roll a die and then ignore whatever number they got. If you don't care what happens, you could even tell them what to roll against beforehand.

3) If players want a more standard system, have them list some advantages and flaws on a sheet of paper.
>>
>>25793129
>like CoC but don't want dark
Use BRP. It's the generic form of the percentile system used by CoC and pretty much every other Chaosium product. All you need to do to make BRP a pony game is change what skills are available.
>>
>>25793261
Oh shit man that sounds perfect. Have a best horse.

Now I just have to tweak the setting and spin all these story seeds into actual campaign hooks.

And find some fucking players

Thanks for the best horse. Have fun with BRP. I've used it for everything from high fantasy to cyberpunk and it runs beautifully.

It's the best sixteen page long RPG you'll ever play. Completely generic, has all the functionality you need, and isn't all up its own ass with rules.
>>
>>25793159
I like the Role for Shoes system because of this.
Its so rule light that when the story gets going we some times forget to make roles or use experience points.
It becomes more of 'Whats going to happen next' than 'What do i have to role'.
>>
>>25793728
>I had asked the players if they were doing anything to prepare for the dungeon before leaving town. One of them said he's checking to see if "he has his heirloom shield" with him. He rolls and botches, and so I say: "Your father is a shoemaker. You are not sure why you ever thought you had anything even remotely close to a shield."

This system sounds incredibly entertaining. This seems like a good way to run quick RPGs in threads.
>>

Did you let him embark on a quest to get heirloom boots of kicking?

>I've been thinking of running an MLP tabletop RPG

You dumb nigger.
>>
>>25791868
I've run pony RPGs using storytelling (Mage: the Ascension, played with adults) and fate (The Dresden Files, played with mixed company). Both can be pretty loose, and as long as everybody's on the same page it doesn't have to get too dark.
>>
>>25793159
You just described freeform RP. Freeform RP is for kids and ERP.
>>
I've been tossing around an idea for a game ran in the shadowrun system. Savage world's is a cool plug in system, same with fate. Ponyfinder isn't to bad once you get rid of the whole pre-built setting. I've been running a Roll20 game with some anons from here, we've put close to 120 hours and it's a blast
>>
>>25795405

>>
>>25796427
Did you just throw a recruitment thread out to find players, or did you pick people up from a quest thread or similar? I'm probably going to use roll20 myself, my friends in RL who like pony don't enjoy tabletop RPGs and my RPG friends don't care about pony.
>>
>>25795583

Just remember, fate core a shit. You want fate accelerated or one of the published games based off it (like dresden).

D&D 5e is a good system. Much quicker combat/character creation/everything than 3.x.
Also /tg/ tends be chill about GR15, as long as you're polite.
>>
>>25803548

I dunno about that.

You might be able to squeeze it into another thread, but a pone OP image is gonna raise an immense amount of rectal trauma.
>>
>>25803575
Trick is to not reveal your power level until a few posts in. Start by explaining what you want, and then after you get a couple replies, say, "oh, and I'm running a game for my pony-loving friends, and we want it to be set in Equestria."
>>
If Fallout: Equestria is your thing, here ya go.
If you want badass spells, go for this one: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_nrgdTME3IPaDAtaFBQaVVfZTg/edit?pli=1

>>
>>25791868
High Magic, Low Tech GURPS setting maybe?
It'd take some sorting out to do at the start but probably be easier in the long run.
>>
>>25791868

Heroes Unlimited, published by Palladium Books would make a pretty good starting point. It contains rules specifically for intelligent animal characters, and contains a fairly comprehensive magic section.
>>
>>25796427
>shadowrun

So basically, Shadowrun where everyone is an Aspected Magician, Adept, Magician and Mystic Adept?
>>
>>25803647
I'm gonna give BRP with some skill adaptations and maybe magic tweaks a try. I think the "generic system stuck in Equestria" route is the best way to go, and I've played BRP-based games before but not FATE or GURPS.

>>25803575
I post in /4ccg/ too much to have any faith that anywhere else on this website will be chill about GR15. Not like I'd run in there with a big fucking pony OP, at any rate.

My current character in the 3.5 campaign I'm playing in is an unabashed Twilight Sparkle expy. It's a blast to roleplay 'socially incompetent, unable to deal with other people' S1E1 Twilight.

>>25815137
It's even more fun as DM.

I ruled that unicorns feed on magic, so places and people that experience a lot of magic tend to attract unicorns. Ever morning the party's wizard wakes up with a unicorn chewing on his hair, and he has to chase it away with a stick.

Eventually it started offering to throw him a party if he would stop chasing it away.

If my knowledge of the arts of taxing doesn't fail me, you gotta elude taxes rather than evade them.

Once you get the auditor arguing about technisisms and how buying 10 and 11 packages of product rather than 21 to avoid paying taxes in over 20 units is completely legit, you have succeded and he won't notice nor care about the cute little pony drawn under the T account.

This is a third-world country tactics though, don't know if they would work in 'Murika or if they even have the difference between elusion and evasion.
