Larson hated the idea of "pandering" to the audience and he was never proud of Slice of Life. He mentioned it many times that it was idea forced to him by Hasbro (most likely Stephen Davis since Meghan is chill and don't force anything upon anyone) and he was never keen on doind this episode.
Initially he suppose to write the gryphon episode while Amy Rogers would handle the 100th episode.
Later the script writers were switched for some reasons, and Larson end up with the Slice of Life plot being written in 10% by AKR(she came up with Donkey wedding plot) which he later continue after researching the fadnom stuff on WIKIA (yes he mention researching wikia)
So now he hates himself that he had to put things from fandom (Derpy/Doctor, Lyra/BonBon, VinylOctavia) just because Hasbro execs wanted to him to be "cool" with the bronies.
After "Magical Mystery Cure" this is yet another bullet that Larson had to take and get the blame on himself. He saved Meghan in S3 and now AKR in S5

An episode that is essentially a journey into the mind of each pony and takes a different artstyle which each pony traversed.
Rainbow Dash would be a modern Cel shaded style with lots of red and stripes.
Pinkie Pie would be a world out of fluff and confetti, with the style of puppets on sticks, strings, and hands.
Rarity would be a dynamic black and white pencil sketch style, with jewels and other precious things being the things of color.
Fluttershy would a "Everything has big eyes and looks super cute style.Like Hello Kitty/Hamtaro sweet."
Applejack would have a sepia film filter and with the world set as an old time stage, each pony having a part to play in the audience of her mind.
Luna would be Tim Burton esque stop motion figures.
Discord would actually be very neat and tidy, however very aware that someone would visit his mind and gets offended when they expect it chaotic.
Celestia's mind would be the endless boundaries of space, each star representing another friend she had made in her life.
Spike's mind would be the dark streets of Trottham, ponies being the residents of, and himself, a learning Mousey to Twilight's Cat-Mare.
And Twilight's mind?A giant library, done in the style of the actual show.

M.A Larson was the writer of many of my favourite episodes, including Sonic Rainboom, Call of the Cutie, Return of Harmony, Amending Fences. I think he really has the right idea for the show and I would greatly appreciate it if he could get complete creative control. Unless it's the George Lucas sort of deal, which I doubt.

Well he said in a podcast that when he joined S5, the premises were already done and he was taking over editing after Meghan did half of the work done.
S6 should be fully made by him as the story editor. He will be the one who decide which stories are accepted on what will be the main story arc for the season. If Hasbro execs won't mess around then we should get 100% Larson season based on his design.

I actually thought it was one of the best S5 episodes of the bunch.
It's Twilight repeatedly showing she's not Miss Perfect Princess or even Mary Sue power-levelling through a problem. It shows how even the Element of Friendship herself can forget old friendships and maniacally work on one set of new friends while virtually ignoring the old.
