So apparently the Equestria Girls movies did well enough on Japanese Netflix that they're going to pick the show back up in Japan. However...

>Order is for 52 newly dubbed episodes

Japan just can't do anything right.

>Japan just can't do anything right.

I think the reason MLP didn't catch on the first time is because the merchandising was advertised to American tastes. They emphasized the brushable ponies, but Japanese kids aren't really into brushable dolls and, autistic thought it may be, prefer "show accuracy".

So this time around they'll apparently be focusing on plastic miniatures (the Funko toys are confirmed as the main line). That seems more Japan's speed.

Though hopefully the show will get a better timeslot that 7am on Tuesdays. And hopefully they won't edit 2 minutes out of every episode for time, but there's probably no way around that.

I read the comments on Nico whenever a new episode is fansubbed.

They call Rarity "Obaasan" (Auntie) and view her as a middle-aged woman (mainly due to her wearing makeup, which in Japan is associated with women who are older).

The Japanese see her as being greedy and rude and "too American". Which is funny, since they fucking LOVE Applejack and think of her as being "fundamentally Japanese" (despite all the cowgirl American south trappings to her).
>>

This is great news. I really enjoyed watching through seasons 1 and 2 dubbed.

I could do TL scripts for the show if anyone is interested in doing the timing/editing for them.
>>
>>25738103
>I forget, what did Japan think of Spike? Didn't they see him as a stereotypical annoying younger brother?

They're pretty ambivalent toward Spike. They don't seem to hate him the way Americans do.

There are certain episodes they didn't like, but usually when the lesson of the episode clashes with their cultural values.

They DESPISED "Testing Testing 1 2 3" for its message, but that's a complex cultural situation with their intense views on studying and HOW to study and their merciless attitude toward people who fail tests.
>>
>>25737846
That's pretty cool, what do they think about the rest of the mane 6?
>>
I'm happy to hear this. S3, etc. obviously change the show's tune a bit and getting a new audience to filter that through will be interesting as a fan.

Hopefully they start during the S5-6 hiatus.
>>
>>25738155
>That's pretty cool, what do they think about the rest of the mane 6?

Generally:

>Fluttershy is best pony and everybody's waifu
>Twilight is kawaii but typical main character; not as interesting as supporting cast
>Rainbow Dash is cool but not one of the favorites; not despised like Rarity, just not popular because she's too masculine. The dub made her a bokuko, so nobody wants to waifu her
>Applejack represents Japanese values so they like her a lot, probably second favorite behind Furatasou
>They like Pinkie but think she's too American much of the time. They don't seem to like it when the show takes on Chuck Jones style squash and stretch American cartoon aesthetics and those are more common when Pinkie's around. They love Maud, though.
>Rarity is least favorite and they don't seem to like her much at all, but we've been over that.
>>
>>25738199
Do you have any impressions of what they thought of S5 episodes? I remember seeing a blog that summarized a general reaction of Japan to certain episodes.
>>
>>25738199
They seem to have top tier taste, except for fluttershy being everyone's waifu.
>>
>>25738174
>Hopefully they start during the S5-6 hiatus.

Pinkie's actress (Mimorin) tweeted in October that she was recording episodes of the show and did 2 in one day, so they may have it ready by April of 2016 (the show premiered in April the first time around).

It's the 52 episode thing that worries me. There are 65 episodes available to dub and there's no way they can slice it where they won't have to either skip episodes in order to get the season openers/finales in there to fit 52.

The Best Selection thing was so fucking stupid. They added 13 episodes to the show's original 52 episode order, but they went with reruns instead of dubbing the 13 episode season 3.

Maybe they'll add 13 episode again at the end of the new 52 order and that'll get the 65 they need without skipping episodes.
>>
>>25738252
Do you think they'd just skip over season 3 entirely?

>>
>>25738235
>Do you have any impressions of what they thought of S5 episodes?

They really liked Starlight. Japanese bronies seem to keep their fingers on the pulse and during the Sombra segment of the finale, lots of commenters were bringing up Radiant Hope from the comics (the IDW books started to get a translated release in Japan, but stopped after only a few volumes; they never made it to Fiendship is Magic so whatever they know about Radiant Hope had to come from scanlations).

Likewise, they seemd to get ALL the inside fandom jokes present in Slice of Life which was impressive. Even the origin of Steven Magnet's name which would be a complicated thing to explain to a Japanese speaker.

They seemed to be moved by "Amending Fences" and a lot of viewers sympathized with Moondancer. Japanese social hierarchy can be pretty brutal so I think her trouble socializing struck a cord with them.

They loathed that trilogy of Rarity centric episodes in the middle of the season, but seemed to be pretty okay on Rarity Investigates because of the noir style and Rarity actually being cute and helpful instead of a greedy cougar.

They lost their shit at the end of Crusaders of the Lost Mark. However, they thought the moral of Diamond Tiara talking back to her mother was "too American" (in Japan you NEVER talk back to your parents, never fucking EVER).

They wouldn't stfu about Lady Gaga during The Mane Attraction.

Scare Master was probably the most popular episode of the season beyong Crusaders and the opening/finale. But that's Furatasou for you.

They went straight from the end of season 2 to Equestria Girls, so any kids watching the film on Netflix had no idea where the fuck Twilight's wings came from.

The Japanese DVD box set of the series is getting nothing but 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon Japan:

>http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%8B%E3%83%A1%E3%80%8C%E3%83%9E%E3%82%A4%E3%83%AA%E3%83%88%E3%83%AB%E3%83%9D%E3%83%8B%E3%83%BC%EF%BD%9E%E3%83%88%E3%83%A2%E3%83%80%E3%83%81%E3%81%AF%E9%AD%94%E6%B3%95%EF%BD%9E%E3%80%8DDVD-BOX-%E6%B2%A2%E5%9F%8E%E3%81%BF%E3%82%86%E3%81%8D/dp/B00YFTD1TY/

The only criticism is that they're the TV edited version and the cut scenes weren't restored (which is something Japan never does; they cut the episodes before dubbing, same way with Transformers and TMNT; it's stupid but that's just how they do things).

One thing I've noticed in the comments is that the Japanese, like the rest of the world, REALLY associates fat people and overeating with Americans.

Whenever a character stuffs their face, the comments just explode with

>Towaisan is so American in this scene

>Americans are so gross
>Pinkie is American

It gets pretty annoying. Weird how they love an American cartoon but seem to hate Americans...

Someone in the comments explained the reference, but yeah, most of the viewers needed a hand with that one. It's like that with a lot of the more American-centric pop culture stuff. Someone had to explain the Big Lebowski reference to them during Slice of Life, but there's always at least SOMEONE in the comments who gets the references and comes to the rescue.

I was more surprised with the Hooffields and McColts episode, as EVERYONE seemed to get that historical reference which I figured would be a very esoteric American thing. I guess that History Channel miniseries got a Japanese release or something, because they were ontop of that.

Record labels pay them to include their songs (which is why the lyrics never have anything to do with the shows they're attached to). It's part of the show's funding.

The record label that supported MLP during it's TV Tokyo run was Pony Canyon, so all the commercials during their timeslot were for Pony Canyon albums and bands.

Every time Rainbow Dash starts to throw herself a pity party and call herself dumb the comments light up with

>Yep

>You sure are

The Japanese have zero tolerance for people who fail academically and the lesson about "different studying methods" REALLY didn't gel with them, as the Japanese believe in a singular style of studying (the state instituted style) and anyone who can't cope with it is generally considered to be worthless.

So yeah, if they do skip any episodes to fit season 3-5 into 52 episodes, I'm betting they leave out Testing 1 2 3 (even though it's important narratively to RD's evolution as a Wonderbolt).

Actually, Applejack is probably the most Japanese of all the ponies.

She works hard and doesn't complain, she values family and tradition over profit and efficiency, she's much more a follower than a leader, and she has a single minded obsession or two which she truly excels at rather than a plethora of hobbies where she performs mediocre.

Compare to Pinkie, who does a little bit of everything kind poorly and does it all at top volume and against everyone else's will and is really only good at eating all of the cake and entertainment.

Who's the real 'Murica the Pony?

>>
>>25739791

Don't believe that Anon.

The Japanese are actually very tolerant of people who fail exams, provided they keep trying.

The reason is they have a LOT of tests, and they're all very hard, but you need to pass those tests to get the certificates in order to advance in life.

The only really big MUST pass test is the transition from middle school to the high school you want, and that's because you only have that one year of your life.

College entrance exams you can postpone, or retake.

Think about how many anime and manga are about lovable losers. If the Japanese hated people who fail tests, how would Doraemon and Nobita have lasted this long?

The Japanese don't actually idolize karoshi (death at the office from overwork) They get more holidays than US workers, actually.

But they do value hard work and no whining. Praise of gaman (enduring in silence) is still very much alive.

Of course, everyone is different. Pretty much ever character type in the world exists in every culture.

But AJ definitely embodies some of the more traditional Japanese values.
>>
>>25738988
That's great and all but only neets watch MLP and they failed ont that front.
>>
>>25739960

Actually, the Japanese are not able to speak English because ironically they are not able speak English.

They read well enough to give it the ol' college try by email, and indeed a lot of the quirks of "Engrish" are just dictionary translations of Japanese phrases. But they have trouble speaking because there's damn few places on their islands for them to practice.

America kind of has the same problem with everything but Spanish. If you live anywhere buy one of the big cities, you never get a chance to speak anything but English. Boom, monolingual society.

Compare to Europe where some countries are small enough to jog across in an hour. Everyone can speak multiple languages because you can put every new word or phrase to use immediately and often.

But, funny as it is, My Little Ponies opened up my eyes.
Anime "characters" today are nothing but huge breasted school girls, and stock face and built faggy guys everywhere, and the shows themselves overly sexual. There are two variants to this, the "oh so mature and edgy" shows that have shit writing standards and are alway trainwrecks, or child shows, which unlike MLP will not ever think of, or acknowledge their adult fandom.

Interesting thing to despise.
Most ancient/medieval histories are similarly gruesome and brutal, its hard to despise one without despising another. Usually that means theres more of a personal element at play.

Pretty much any culture in antiquity was barbarous and fucked up, and most of them only got worse after the classical/ancient period when the medieval period began.

On the subject of the one you're speaking about? There are cultures alive today which are pretty much worse in every way pic possibly related

But still, pretty much any culture has some degree of beauty to it. Its stories, its art, its philosophy. Even if the larger whole is cruel or harsh now, it doesn't have to detract from the parts that are really quite pleasant.

I can see why you'd have loved it. I can see why you hate it now. Moderation is key. Be aware of whats good and bad both.

Japanese dub ended at ep52.
There are 65 eps available to dub (s3=13, s4=26, s5=26)

Understand that all these opinions on "what Japanese fans think" comes from a single source: Nico Douga.

So it's just one sample population.

Then again, there really isn't any other place for Japanese mlp fans to talk about the show. 2chan generally frowns upon discussion of non-Japanese cartoons and so most threads about American cartoons get deleted or ignored.

And Nico is the only place for fansubs of the current episodes, so it kind of IS the main hub for Japanese opinions on pony.

>Gaijin not understanding why Japanese didn't like Testing 1, 2, 3

In Japan, there is a singular state-sponsored method of studying for exams that is taught from elementary school and enforced through the rest of grade school.

And when I say "state sponsored" I mean that officials from the school board perform annual inspections on the homes of each student to make sure they have study spaces and materials up to the state code for their study methods.

There is only ONE way to study in Japan and it is enforced by the government. Those who don't adapt to it are pretty much ridiculed and left to rot (in Japan, there isn't the idea of academic achievement being something embarassing or pathetic; it's academic failure that makes you an outcast).

The comments on Nico during Twilight's speech at the end of the episode were all pretty irate, denouncing the moral. There were a lot of

>Do Americans belive this?
>This is why Americans are stupid
>American test scores are bad so they should not be giving advice
>Bad lesson

And so on.
>>
>>25741696
weeb
>>
>>25741696

ON THE OTHER HAND

Applebuck Season was an episode with a moral that really, REALLY hit the mark in Japanese culture.

Japanese people work 12 hour days, often 6 days a week and the threat of overworking oneself into injury or death is very real and a common outcome.

So the lesson that Applejack learns about being too generous to the point of overworking herself and getting sick/hurt had a lot of resonnence in Japan.

It's one of the reasons why she quickly became a favorite character, because her first spotlight episode very succinctly encapsulated a Japanese cultural problem.

>>This is why Americans are stupid

>And so on.

Which is funny, because the Japanese school system is basically "no child left behind" cranked up to 11. They teach kids how to take exams, not how to learn.

Specifically, they only teach them how to take entrance exams, not anything practical or useful which is why a lot of Japanese kids flounder when entering the real world and often resort to suicide.
>>

>implying anyone who's not American or Canadian sees any difference between the two

Japanese use "American" as a synonym for "foreigner" very frequently. When you're in cities in Japan it is common to see signs on the doors of restaurants and shops that say "NO AMERICAN".

It doesn't mean American specifically but all foreigners are not allowed. Japan equate foreigner = American.
>>
>>25741765
The Japanese seem to have trouble even making a difference between Europeans and Americans, so the difference between Canadians and Americans is a difference that is too small for them to even notice.
>>
Can we just admit that most cultures are pretty shit regardless of where you are because less than 200 years ago we didn't even have fucking steam power? We're barely into the technological age and culture takes a long time to change. In cities where there are nearby US military bases then yes, it is extremely common.

Not without merit, though, as most American soldiers stationed in Japan are terrible, awful people who cause a lot of trouble in the nearby cities without consequence because American military protects them from the law.
>>
>>25741744
It's written in Los Angeles
>>
>>25741765

Even when there aren't "no foreigner" signs on doors, the employees wil often throw foreigners out as soon as they set foot inside.

Common method is to hold out both hands and make an X with index fingers and then drive the foreigner out of the door and back onto the street like stray animal.

Most Japanese natives don't see the signs on doors or know about the foreigners getting thrown out because it has no effect on them so why should they care.

>So I've never heard the Japanese dub, do they actually translate the names that can be translated considering most of them are real words like Twilight or do they do that thing where they use the English word but add an o at the end for some reason?

They stick to English names almost exclusively. The extra vowel sounds are an artifact of Japanese language having only 6 main phonetic sounds (AH, EE, OOH, AYE, OH, N) and the English names, when adapted to that phonetic structure end up sounding weird.

When they change names to Japanese, it's usually for minor concepts like the Everfree Forest becoming 帰らずの森 "The Forest of No Return".
>>
>>25741845
>Doesn't like half their economy rely on America buying their shit?

Just because they need us doesn't mean they like us.

And Abe has been trying to move them away from American reliance ever since he took office. He wants to remilitarize Japan so they'll no longer need American military to protect them (also so they can attack China over those stupid little islands).

>The craziest thing about all of it is that while high school and higher education entrance exams are hell on earth, once you actually get into a university it's smooth sailing. Bachelor and Master degree courses in Japan are an absolute joke

Its one of the reasons why comparing international test scores based on numbers without a curve is an awful practice.

68% is a failing grade in the US while 50% is a failing grade in Japan. So of course Japan is going to have higher graduate levels and test scores than the US or other countries that have tougher standards.

Then there's China, where you can pay someone to take your exams for you, but that's another discussion entirely.

They kick foreigners out of shops and restaurants like that because most of them are either tourists who don't speak Japanese (and the Japanese don't want to deal with people who don't speak their language) or they're Air Force and the Japanese HATE HATE HATE US Soldiers on leave in their cities (not always without good reason).

When in Japan, you kind of have to eat from vending machines or international chain restaurants to survive as many locally owned business refuse service to gaijin on principle.

God damn nips will never fail to make me chuckle
>>

This is some pretty shitty reasoning right there. What use is a big population if all the old people gradually die off anyway?
>>
>>25747700
It becomes a smaller, more sustainable population?

You really need to question your assumptions about perpetual growth.
>>
I think Japan is just doing what we're all going to do soon. The human race is going to die out a few hundred years after we develop full immersion VR because no one will be having sex.

>Figma tier Equestria Girl Figures

I can believe.

She fits into the Yamato Nadeshiko archetype. Yamato Nadeshiko are essentially supposed to be the ideal Japanese woman. They usually possess some or all of these virtues: loyalty, domestic ability, wisdom, maturity, and humility. They prioritize the needs of their husband and/or family over her own but will stand firm against any forces or individuals that would threaten said husband or family.
>>
>>25747945

So they like Fluttershy because she's mindless and loyal.

Like a pet.

Miyazaki was right about Japanese anime fans and their views on women.

I don't know why but I find this hilarious

>Japanese MLP twitter supposedly announced Funko Figures and 52 new episodes of the show heading to TV, but we can't seem to locate that
>but we can't seem to locate that

I didn't believe it when it was posted, and I still don't believe it now. I loved how cute the voices were and was pretty sad the show ended there. Until I see some actual proof, I'll just continue to watch the jap dub once every few months.

Japanese housewives are literally just expensive dishwashers you can show off to your friends
>>
>>25747972
I wouldn't say that's all there is to a Yamato Nadeshiko. You know how Fluttershy cares for her animals? The way she makes sure they are comfortable and all their needs are taken care of? That's much how a Yamato Nadeshiko takes care of her children. Also you remember how she confronted that dragon in Dragonshy or the Cockatrice in Stare Master? That's how a Yamato Nadeshiko would confront a bully that's antagonizing one of her kids.

>>25747972
Those kinds of anime fans are the ones who spend a shitload of money, though.
>>
>>25748165
This
The reason the anime industry is so shit is because it's an industry, if it doesn't have at least 5 female love interests with at least 4 of them having bright neon hair than it gets swept under the rug.
>>
>>25747724
wisdom oasis in a desert. unfortunately though the other anon has a point, perpetual growth is our model, so they are fucked in the economic sense, in the long term though they are making the right choice.
>>
>>25748149
you know, its horrifying that in japan town the ideal japanese woman horse has crippling social anxiety.
>>
>>25748248
Yeah. Miyazaki gets a lot of shit for being a grump, but there are many people who bemoan the fact that waifufags and the like absolutely dominate creative output like you said.
>>
>>25748337
Most Japanese women (and men) have completely given up on actual relationships, though. Japanese men have these unrealistic standards that are based on centuries old dated moral codes that no woman could possibly live up to in the modern age.

So they just remain single and prop up an entire industry so they can have their demure, emotionally crippled waifu. After all, ew, all those women out there are spending their own money and having jobs.

>" Fucking Westerners filling their heads with ideas and taking my rightful waifu that someone embodying samurai ideals deserves," cried Hiroya, weeping into his body pillow

>>25748388
I can't wait until VR becomes easily available. It'll be so interesting to watch Japanese society crumble.

In 2chan, no one call her "Furataso" but "Furata(Flutter)",
and I think "Furata" is not most popular pone among them

Well she isn't the most popular, but she is considered "Honorary Japanese" by the fandom there.

The scalper's market is killing me. It took me months to find a Figma Saber that isn't stretching it to a hundred dollars

It depends on what audience they're trying to gain. For example there's a bunch of series without as many waifus but still captivates readers through intrigue, anger, sympathy, character-apathy and philosophy.
>>
>>25748388
you would be a moron to not understand japanese women are just as awful. not that anything you said is wrong, just that its an incomplete picture of a broken relationship picture.

I remember a picture lurking around /a/ whenever someone discusses anime industry on how the creative teams are forced to pander to the obsessive market, and you can see the pain in his eyes as he says it.

Also love the fact that they refer to her as a Yankee. Her ranting at SciTwi was pretty well liked.
