Copernicus was actually very hesitant to publish his theories at first, notably because he lacked a lot of outright observable evidence (even Galileo had problems with this, in fact, he only expanded on prior theories through observation of Venus, never really proved or disproved anything) and there were holes in his theories he knew very well about. Bishop Giese really pushed him to publish, which actually was met with interest, particularly with Pope Clemont VII
Both Galileo and Copernicus built upon prior theories from Oresme and Albert of Saxony, plus a plethora of others
