This also doesn't explain their power reserves either. In the battle, they were mostly using the same basic spells (long, regular and pulsed lazors with shields). Starlight was also using a self-levitation spell. If that were easy, it would've been seen before. Starlight had higher energy usage, but they exhausted themselves at the same time ergo Starlight has more power.

That's one way to approach it, but I don't buy it. At best you could argue based on that that they have roughly equivalent powerlevels. Otherwise, if Twilight were actually stronger she could just overpower Starlight without making a scene.
