I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Twilight was always supposed to have an apprentice called Sunset Shimmer. But that character was stolen to make the EG movies.
Thus, they created a new pony called Starlight Glimmer who would serve the same role in the main show. They are essentially the same character.
Now that EG has become fully disconnected from the pony universe (they have their own Twilight, their own talking Spike), it can serve as it's own franchise.

It amazes me some still cling that a character made exclusively for the EqG franchise would become part of the main show.
FG should have killed that line of thinking.
Even FG deleted scenes support that even further.
SS didn't want to return to equestrian out of genuine homesickness in those scenes. She LITERALLY wanted to return
because understanding magick in egland was too hard. Basically a quitter. And the alternative ending just cemented it even further because she was literally asked if she was going back to equestrian but she declined and decided to stay with the girls.
Now that the finale has happen the best you fuckers could hope is a cameo or something which seems unlikely
