That is true. But the storytelling itself in many episodes of S5, especially those post-hiatus, have been lackluster, I think.
Also, I had imagined it was set that S2 was better than S1.
I will be very honest with you: This is the best season of the show!
Not only because of Starlight Glimmer, CMC getting their Cutie Marks, the 100th episode (fuck you I love this episode!) or more, but mostly because that's the season in which shits change and grow up! I know some of you are scared about the eventual ending of the show, but better let the birds grow up and fly in their own direction rather to hold them in a cage in which they will never learn anything...

First half was pretty dank. Second half kinda started to bomb a bit and I blame Meghan. Still better than S4 I think because shit is actually happening in the story for once unlike S4 which was just the premiere saying Twilicorn would be a big deal, ignoring her literally all season, and toss the Mane 5 aside in the ending so Twilight can have a DBZ fight and get an ugly ass castle.

I think it'll always be troublesome to rate the first instance in a series compared to later instances, like saying Gen 1 Pokémon is the worst or what have you. Later advances in a series doesn't detract from the first instance's appeal, because it set the status quo you are comparing it agaist. It doesn't make sense to say that the first instance "should have been" anything.

Probably the first villain in My Little Pony to bring an ideological conflict perspective in the show.
Starlight Glimmer and Twilight Sparkle believe in friendship but not the same way, so that makes a gray moral about how good and evil are relative...
First half was good but second half almost felt half-assed somehow. So many generic plotlines and zero surprises.

8/10. This season focused on world building which everyone on /mlp/ besides me hates. Though What about Discord was a genuine turd that ruined it for a while.

It was better than Season 4 overall, but the last few episodes have been rather underwhelming. However, in Season 5 I only hate Princess Spike and rather dislike Appleoosa's Most Wanted. Everything else was either "meh", good or really great. In Season 4, Daring Don't, Rainbow Falls, It Ain't Being Breezies, Power Ponies, Equestria Games and Somepony to Watch Over Me were all shit.
The second half of Season 5 was rather unimpressive compared to the first half, with the exception of Crusaders of the Lost Mark and perhaps today's episode, although it wasn't nearly as good as Crusaders of the Lost Mark. Canterlot Boutique was also good, but everything else was just really forgettable. I liked Hearthbreakers for the characters, but the story itself was pretty shit.
The first half had two episodes I really hated and a few rather good episodes. Amending Fences in particular was really good and I liked The Lost Treasure of Griffinstone. Slice of Life was so weird that even now I have trouble explaining what the fuck I have watched. The season opener was great, certainly one of the best.
So far, I'd say it was barely better than Season 4 simply because it had fewer episodes that I consider to be complete garbage. There were a lot of episodes that were just average and some that were really good. The question is now whether the season finale will be better or worse than Twilight's Kingdom. I'd be glad if we didn't have any more DBZ fights, but judging by the preview it might be heavily action-based. We'll see how it will turn out.
Season 5: 8/10
Going by averages, Season 5 is shaping up to be my favorite season.

I don't know, watched years ago as I said and I just remember hating it. I think it was something to do with Rainbow Dash being totally out of character and me naturally disliking anything to do with the ponies' pets.
