Equestria Games was ultimately great for him but /mlp/ bitched about a scene designed to build up the ending and a "bad" conclusion to the Games arc. It was one of the best lessons and episodes for his character but no one gave a shit because it wasn't 22 minutes of generic sports movie expys.
Spike is at his best when he plays the straight man, and acts as a foil to the crazy and nonsensical characters around him.
When he's not doing that, yeah, it's pretty boring.

That one diamond dogs episode way back was the only one I can say that tired to develop his personality a bit. Love struck but wants to help his friends, and knows he can't on his own.
I still see him more on par with the CMC than the Main 6. He a baby more or less but you expect him to be more than paper thin.

Having the EQGames be about the actual games (and maybe a dilemma surrounding it) wouldn't be bad, actually. It would have made sense to see more of the competitions after all the build up in prepping for the event we had before it.
It was still a "good" Spike episode despite the buildup for his crowning achievement, but I can understand the complaint that the Games had little to do about the Games themselves.
