I'm feeling shitty and depressed. So I want to see some of your guys' artwork. Art you've done. Seeing other peoples' artwork makes me feel happy, good or bad. I want to see how the effort of the things you guys have done, and to see you each talk about each other's artwork and give some good constructive criticism.
Basically, post your art shit.

OP here
These are all adorable. You guys have some good skills, and it's pleasant to see your guys' effort on these!
>>
I can copy images I see pretty flawlessly, but I can't just draw things from my head and have them turn out looking okay. That's without using so many references that it doesn't feel like my drawing.
>>
>>25376251
Grind out those references until you can draw them without it. Once you're confident enough to draw them without references, start stylizing them.
>>
OP here
>>25376251
Bah, nonsense. There is nothing wrong with using references for your drawings. Branching out to start using them only as references instead of recreating them piece for piece is one of the harder steps. A lot of artists have the issue of not liking how they turn out "looking okay." That's what practice is for!

No clue. I have a standard Bamboo Wacom Pen & Touch that I got half a decade ago. It still works, but it's a pain in the ass to get the drivers proper on my OS.
It really depends on how well you can use hand-eye coordination with fine details/dexterity. I can't do it for shit, and I'm looking into either making something like a Cintiq or buying one that's cheap...

I drew these >>25389666 with a Motion Computing LE1600 tablet. It's an old inexpensive Windows XP tablet from 2006 that has a screen you draw directly on. I have an Intuous3, but it is too difficult for me to draw without looking down at my hand since I got so used to drawing on paper. Go check ebay for Motion Computing LE1600 or LE1700. They go for under $200, and they're their own PC you can carry around. They're a bit underpowered for full-on Photoshop, but Paint Tool SAI works beautifully on them.

This guy draws on the same tablet with SAI, so it's pretty fuckin good.

Developing artfag here.
I'm having trouble making good looking lines, like they just look kinda pixely, not really that smooth and fluid. Any tips for brushes to help out with that?
I rock a wacom intuos pro and usually Photohop CS6.
>>
>>25391793
That is likely due to your pressure sensitivity not working with Photoshop. Turn on your shape dynamics for your brush. Refer to vid.

Also be sure your tablet drivers are up to date. Re-install the correct drivers for your intuos pro.

Work on your circles and shapes man. Once you learn that you can draw anything quick, with a little practice here and there. I did >>25392332 in roughly ~20 minutes. Its shit, but with time I'll get better, even though I just started to draw.

>>25394805
Hey now, that's no way to talk! You just gotta practice! It's hard in the beginning, but with perseverance, you'll be able to be drawing quickly in no-time! When I drew >>25377845 , that took about an hour or so. I've been doodling for years now. Those artists that do perfect drawings in under 20 minutes? You're only seeing those drawings, AKA the outcome of the hard work. You're not seeing the frustration poured into it, the hours upon hours of time, and all the failures they encountered to reach that point. You can do it, you just gotta keep trying! Learn from your mistakes and practice!

pic related when I was still new to painting. Took literally almost a day, 20 hours straight. If I were to try and recreate it now, it might only take a few hours at most.

Just go at your own pace, and over time, you will get better, trust me.

Me again. Here is the tablet I use. I found new ones on ebay for $68 shipped. That's cheaper than how much I paid, used. I HIGHLY recommend these LE1600 tablets since they're basically a standalone Cintiq. Just upgrade the RAM to 1.5gb (the max), and install the Wacom legacy drivers from the website. SAI works beautifully on it.

Bah! I am shit.
I can't even draw a fecking straight line.
What you did was ok if not good.
>>
>>25401709
It's old. Back before the iPad, Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to make tablets. It failed, and this tablet is among that group. The upgrade to this tablet, the LE1700, can go up to 4GB of RAM. People install Windows 7 on those, and you get a bit more resolution (drawing space). But they're usually above $200. This one is $68 which is well worth it -- especially as a take-anywhere tablet.

-The pen that comes with it is a Wacom pen (like on a cintiq or intuos).
-The flex dock might not be your first choice, but the thing is sturdy as fuck. It's really helpful.
-Be absolutely sure to install the wacom LEGACY drivers (means old shit). Otherwise pressure sensitivity won't work.
-Stripped versions of photoshop kinda work on it, but not perfectly. Learn to draw with Paint tool SAI. It's a bit better with painting. Photoshop just has all the neat effects.

I started like that, still kinda am actually.

Pic related. Last drawing I made some months ago. Spent /several/ hours just doing that. I started seeing how other people did the same or even better than me in less than 30 minutes while I spent so much time in only one picture. Lost motivation, sure, but you just gotta know that if you want to draw something good you have to practice and practice until you're used to drawing shapes.

Then again, every time I drew a line I always saw some kind of disfigurement. Too much of a perfectionist?
>>
OP here. Sneaking away from school shit to pone
>>25402002
Very cute. One way you can get around it is by sucking it up (as mean as it sounds). You gotta accept that not every line is gonna be fantastic. Instead of doing long lines for the sketches, try short strokes, actually sketch it. It'll help lay out where your final lines are going to go, and it'll save your sanity in the long run.

The drawfagship was even more hugboxy if you ask me. Encouragement is fine. But sometimes you need someone to tell you when someone is is down right shit.

Looking at the /ic/ requests in the drawthread right now and they all have the same exact problem that's been discussed hundreds of times over my many more experienced artists. Symbol drawing and bad lines caused by lack of control due to bad posture.

First criticism I would give to any aspiring /mlp/ drawfags is to make sure you get your proportions right, particularly legs, head, and wings. Don't forget to take into account perspective.
>>
>>25376444
was that from the Wehrmacht in Equestria threads?
>>
>>25404201
Understandable. Some people need the encouragement to get started, but others do need a cold hard shove in the right direction.

>>25404267
Fundamentals in general. Know them in and out before you break them. Even if you just want to draw cartoon ponies I'd suggest doing irl horse figure drawings. You need to constantly push yourself, make everything look right, and evaluate what you did wrong or you'll never get better.
>>
OP here. School shit took longer than I wanted it to, and I goofed off doing other stuff, too.
Not sure how good at criticizing I am, since I've kind of had it pushed into my head that criticism is bad because "BUT MUH ART STYLE" by Tumblr
I'll give it a shot...
>>25404225
Alright, well, for >>25402462 , I will say that the hair is good, but the proportions of the legs and body are off. The front legs should probably be enlarged more to make them look less stunted. The neck could use a bit more definition at the back, but otherwise it's not terribly bad~!
>>25385377
Same here. You've got a lot of the little details down great, like the hair shape, ears, and snout. The biggest issue to look at is the front legs to make them more proportional to the rest of the body to make her seem less short and stout.
>>25396061
Very cure, and the hair is still good. The wings kinda throw me off a little bit in terms of the feathers, and basically, it's just proportion issues I'm seeing, mostly the back legs this time. The big thing is to address the inking/outlining. I know it's a little doodle, but if you look at the back of the neck behind the hair, it looks like the neck makes a little point, and the lines don't connect in a natural way. Do you know what I'm saying? Drawing from the bottom layer upwards is probably a the ideal route. Drawing the basic shapes, adding in the details later, and not being afraid to go back over lines and areas. Try sketching everything out first, and going over your base lines and getting a general feel for the drawing before doing any final lines. Basically, don't go for the final lining right off the bat. Does that make sense? If not, I can show what I mean.

Phew... alright. Anyone else? Did I do alright?
>>
>>25404627
I like you. Not everyone realizes that giving critique is a skill all on it's own. To answer your question honestly, your crit crosses the nitpick line. It's one thing to point out what's wrong, it's another thing to point out why they made the mistake.

>>25396061
This guy for example. The kind of crit I'd give is that he is for a fact symbol drawing and needs to study basic form. The placement of the wing gives it all away. -Always- think in 3-D even when drawing with simple lines. Also the line quality in general I can tell you're gripping your pencil a lot tighter than needed. The harder you hold it the harder it is to control, it's also bad for your wrist in the long run. Make sure your drawing from your shoulder and elbows as well.
>>
>>25405516
Of course I should also add that only beginners need this kind of crit. For better pieces people tend to over think the technicality when, "The lighting looks shit," or, "Study anatomy and use references to fix X problem." will suffice. I can go on about the nitty gritty down to a lengthy 1-2 physics lecture about how light and color works and the different variations of scattering. Or even name all the muscles and functions in the human body by heart, it's a pun but when someone has made it that far, I feel like they can learn better researching why it happened on their own. Kind of a teach a man how to fish thing.

One way to help with stuff like legs is to either a) draw them as cylinders first, stopping at each joint, or b) using circular loops over and over, the edges being the edge of the shape and circles/loops getting larger as it approaches closer to the camera to give it foreshortening/perspective. Does that make sense? I can give an example if no.

Very nice! This is what I was kind of referring to when I was saying short and simple strokes for sketching. The eye and snout look a bit off, and the rump and upper part of the knee are kind of angular when they should probably be softer, but otherwise very good! I do recommend lifting up on the pressure you're putting on the lines if only to save your paper, lead, and your arm. Light strokes go a long way! Also, I noticed the post-it note and the notes in your sketchbook. I assume this was for an art class, where the teacher picks up your book and checks your progress?

Was this a better critique?

The reason why construction can feel stiff is because structure and gesture are on two opposite ends of the spectrum and you need to find a balance. Read up on studying gesture, it'll probably improve your line quality as well. Try New Master's Academy on youtube.

Not only dark green looks strange as a pone's coat color, but it's also an "acidic" color, and mixing it with dark blue makes both colors to be very standing out and unappealing to the eye. It's like these black-and-red OC'es.

When the body is turned 3/4s, the hip is hidden by the stomach (see pic). It's often overlooked. Also you'll want to extend the lower legs -- they're almost as long as the head. Nostrils are on the front of the snout. Artist's choice, but I like to put ear fuzz on the rear side of the ear (left, pointing right in your pic). Raise her cutie mark up, and make it bitter -- it should span almost her whole thigh. Her thigh is very round. I like big butts, but I cannot lie that it's too big for her legs.

I fucked up... though I am curious as to what differentiates Anthro vs Satyr for the sake of avoiding rule-breaking and such

Holy fucking shit. You are the reason this board won't gets its golden age again.

Hey, man, all I did was ask about the difference. And the post got deleted anyways, so it's not a big deal anymore. Let's just move on and keep sharing artwork.

wouldn't blame it on you but protip: if you want to keep up on drawing and such, don't let yourself intimidated by autists going all like, "i'm oiffended by X" you have freedom of speech. use it.

dunno what ot draw, might just make some lewd appleblewm

here's mine
I wish I could paint ponies more often. I have almost a foot in muh professional art with some professional artists from Riot or from big animtion studios in my contacts, it's getting complicated... I'm afraid they laugh at me if they see that I only like to paint fanarts, they're pretty intolerant with this

Oh wow, this is really nice. You said you painted this? Like, paint and canvas? Or a paint program? Damn you, pros. Got any tips for getting results like yours? All mine seem to be really sharp-looking, while yours and a lot of great artists I've seen have that really soft feel to it.

kek, I know some people that work for them. I doubt they actually really care. Actually funny story, A friend and I drew pony porn as a social experiment. Some guys that work at ubisoft asked for my portfolio and I accidentally sent them that and then said, "I was supposed to take that to my grave." We all laughed hardheartedly and went back to drawing.

As long as you don't put it in your main portfolio, no one cares.

Combination of different brushes on my part. I'm very particular with how I organize my brushes. The important thing to remember is to start whit big brushes and work your way down.

Ah, I see. I'm stuck using SAI right now... Thinking about trying to get away from using outlines and such. But that's good to know, using the larger brushes first. Hrm.
>>
>>25425555
Thanks to Trojan Horse was a Unicorn, I met a lot of very well known artists like Craig Mullins and popular studios were interested in hiring me, you should take a look on it it's a very great convention !

>>25425563
thank you, I painted it digitally with Photoshop CS6. The tip I can give you is that if you want a smooth render I advice you to use a soft brush with pen pressure. Serge Birault is a master on "smooth look" and realistic portraits. On his masterclass he adviced to put the opacity of the brush very low and be careful at every of his brush strokes. Just control your movements and take your time while painting ! Look at references too it helps a lot. I have like 5 references images next to me while I paint
>>
>>25425614
You don't have to stop using outlines, just use clipping masks, lasso tool, or something and a big brush to block in the general shapes.

>>25425620
>CS6 masterrace Mah nig.

TFW had a ticket to THU but had to sell it because my grandmother abroad died and I needed to use the money to go there. All my mates told me I missed so much. Even Iain McWafu getting all sweaty doing pushups on stage.

The people that host THU were really nice about it though when I asked them about the ticket transfer, they sent their condolences and gave me 33% off for next year. Really good people there and I'm definitely going to go.

woah sucks, if I knew a fellow horsefucker would be here, I was like the only one there with my curious giddy up pony t-shirt. Ian McCaig is awesome on stage and fucking Kim Jung Gi. Daisuke Tsutsumi's panel was very interesting too, he's one of my biggest inspiration !
I'm not sure if they will continue THU next year because Andre was very exhausted of this year... But for sure in two years THU will continue, it's a very great experience and everybody is so nice. (you can go to THU meet ups too)

i know that's certainly an unfinished piece but so far it looks beautiful. and relaxing~
i'm sure there's plenty things to explore left in matter of subjects.

perso, i'm just stuck in a uninspired-phase-therefore-draw-gloomy-stuff.
would make an alternate mlp world comic if i had a lot of time in my hands for it.

merci Patachu C: nope it's a speed painting ! that's why it looks unfinished, i made it in one hour approximatively

I know this phase you're into ! Good luck with your comic :D

Aye, I think I'll do just that. I know a lot of my study mates in UP and Netherlands save up go to massive Drink and Draws in Germany and the like. They always want me to come along but I'm stationed in Asia saving up my freelance money so I can invest in a business or more land and real estate later on.

Kek, if I saw someone in that shirt I would have complemented it.

Don't worry about speed, just take as much time as you need to understand something. Speed comes with skill and familiarity with workflow.

it was amazing, i'm sure the FRAC would rant you a gallery to expose them. all you need is a hipster smug asshole saying things like,
"So deep, This work explores the relationship between the body and midlife subcultures. With influences as diverse as Kierkegaard and Erwin Schrodinger to inspire Anon, new tensions are generated from both simple and complex meanings.
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the theoretical limits of the mind. What starts out as contemplation soon becomes finessed into a dialectic of futility, leaving only a sense of unreality and the unlikelihood of a new synthesis.
As momentary forms become clarified through diligent and repetitive practice, the viewer is left with an epitaph for the limits of our culture."

So much this. Read, understand, apply and evaluate. Just learn in general as well. Even picking up something else to do along side it like writing helps a lot with design and composition more than you think.
