you see OP, back in the early to mid 80's we had the Regan presidency and the 'just say no' campaign, which is why the stoned pony is dark in color (in this case darkness is equated to evil), then we have the stoned pony in the 2010's, notice the lighter coloration (it lighter because attitudes have become more positive on marijuana use and the lighter color reflects that)
As for why it's allowed. Simply put society allows it.

Season 1 had more G1 nostalgia because Faust was something of a fan.

I still expect a guest spot from a G1 VA someday. They had WAY more celebrities and well-known voice artists than G4 ever did.

I know G1 influenced some G4 concepts, like younger ponies not having an icon, and Big Mac being a "Big Brother Pony".
>>
>>25334183
I wonder if ponies like alicorns are partly based on G2 MLPs.
>>
>>25334183
G3 also had some influences that can be found in G4

>Butt pictures being called "cutie marks"
>Breezies
>Ponyville
>Some of the same characters/character names/personality traits
>Some of the same voice actors

And some other subtler influences in style and marketing, combined with Faust's childhood G1-fueled imagination.

The Crystal Empire had the same shtick as Tambalon.
"Dragon Quest" was essentially "Spike's Search" with a shitty ending. Seriously if anyone's still mad about DQ's moral, watch the last 2 minutes of SS for a way better moral.

Forgot to mention the G1 ponies used the Rainbow of Light to defeat their enemies. The Elements of Harmony's rainbow laser is an obvious homage to that.

Funny story, when we saw the leaked rainbow-ified M6 months before the S4 finale, I thought it would be a neat idea if they brought back Tirek since he was defeated by the Rainbow of Light in the original. And lo and behold they did!

FiM is not just a reboot of My Little Pony n' Friends, but rather a reboot of the toyline and its accompanying animated tie-ins altogether. Sure, like >>25335131 said, a lot of its adventure-fantasy material can be traced back to G1 and the 80s series, which is what Faust grew up on (moreso the toys than the series). But Hasbro wanted the brand to be taken in a new direction.

From the Wikipedia article:

Animator and writer Lauren Faust approached Hasbro, seeking to develop her girls' toys property "Galaxy Girls" into an animated series. Faust, who had previously worked on Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends (both created by her husband Craig McCracken), had been pitching original animation aimed at girls for years, but had always been rejected by studios and networks because cartoons for girls were considered unsuccessful. When she pitched to Lisa Licht of Hasbro Studios, Licht showed Faust one of their recent My Little Pony animated works, Princess Promenade, "completely on the fly". Licht considered that Faust's style was well suited to that line, and asked her to consider "some ideas where to take a new version of the franchise".

Faust was initially hired by Hasbro to create a pitch bible for the show, allowing her to get additional help with conceptualization. Faust said she was "extremely skeptical" about taking the job at first because she had always found shows based on girls' toys to be boring and unrelatable. My Little Pony was one of her favorite childhood toys, but she was disappointed that her imagination at the time was nothing like the animated shows, in which the characters, according to Faust, "just had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying". With the chance to work on My Little Pony, she hoped to prove that "cartoons for girls don't have to be a puddle of smooshy, cutesy-wootsy, goody-two-shoeness".

It's not too bad, but there are definitely serials that should be avoided. Start of with the two original specials (Rescue at Midnight Castle + Escape from Catrina) which were both pretty well done for old '80s cartoons and see how you feel from there.

G4 in its current state is nowhere near similar to G3.
>>
>>25337325

>>
>>25337325
>In it's current state
Some might argue otherwise, citing Twilight's ascension in comparison to g3's Princess Prominade. It's a dumb comparison, but there are those who will make it.
I'd say it's more because g3 videos was what Lauren was given and asked to make better, might hypothetically translate to some inspiration being drawn from it, but not anything like a direct reboot.
>>
>>25337474
Princess Promenade ended with every pony in Ponyville becoming a princess.
No no, not in the "We're all princesses in our own way, so in doing this the title of princess means nothing" sort of way. That was the message they may have been going for, but literally every pony gets her own tiara and robe and is deemed a princess. You think MMC was bad, just be glad it didn't end like PP.

>>25337457
Beyond that. It had almost no semblance of conflict. Most of the conflicts were self-resolving. The characters never got mad at each other - in fact, the closest display of anger was, ironically, in G3.5 between Scootaloo and Cheerilee (who were sisters) and later on with the female dragon.

G4 actually has characters that are individuals with their own wants and interpersonal conflicts.

That doesn't sound that more dumb and childish than the alicorn reward bullshit.
>>
>>25337563
>every pony in Ponyville becoming a princess.
Well shit. Hopefully FiM never goes a similar route of just making the main 6 all alicorns like what some people around here want.
>>
>>25337579
For one, it only happened to one character (though I have seen arguments on why it might have been better if the whole Mane 6 became alicornized).

For another, Twilight's alicornification came as a reward for graduating in her studies of friendship. It was a mark of progress. Yes, alicornification didn't need to happen. Yes, the episode and Twilight's ascension could have been handled better. But it wasn't random and out of nowhere like in PP, where Wysteria was crowned Princess simply because she touched a flower that Spike was holding onto for 1,000 years. And then she spends a good chunk of the movie reaching a conclusion we knew right off the bat she would get to - just because you're a princess (or in any title of authority) doesn't mean you have to give up what you love or being with your friends. Cue town-wide princesshood celebration.
>>
>>25337585
Considering how much they seem to be emphasizing Twilight being "the alicorn princess", I doubt it will happen. Besides, it would make McCarthy's "every girl wants to be a princess" comment seem even more against Faust saying "there are many ways to be a girl".

i still love the G1 character design. look at that cute thing...

being hand drawn make them more squeezable than flash/cg vectors stuff.
>>
>>25338733

The g1 designs look fine when they're not being animated by overworked koreans, which wa sadly 90% of the time.

FIM style is mostly ugly outside of the basic mare design , but atleast it looks consistent.
>>
How many G1 villains are there left for FiM to use without resorting to those human witches?
>>
>>25338766
Like 20 or so, but they're mostly shit and boring. Why do you care? They already made Tirek a generic villain barely related to the original, they should just make new ones if they'll end up wasting them anyway.

G4's Tirek was a derivative of Arabus, actually. Since Nightmare Moon had already covered the "bringer of an eternal night" gimmick, they just flat out copied some other G1 bad guy nobody remembers, since he already had the makings of a decent end game antagonist anyways.

I do agree, though. G4 should try sticking to original ideas more often to keep this new generation fresh. Starlight Glimmer's shaping up to be a pretty solid character, and Queen Chrysalis could use a decent episode somewhere down the line as well.

2011 - Get stoned by a DnD Cockatrice
1986 - Get stoned by a giant rock dog monstrosity with hands instead of paws.

Funnily enough the 86 series was made by the same team behind the dungeons & dragons cartoon, you know the one with the blonde archer and small little dwarf DM, with the giant hydra dragon and the white-faced Donut Steel Skeletor rip-off.

Needless to say they both sucked as design and writing. Those monsters were ugly and stretched as fuck.
The DND series had 1D stereotypes
The MLP series had 0D characters, aka no personality whatsoever.

I always liked Razzaroo. She's got the party-planning skills of Pinkie Pie and the bookkeeping efficiency of Twilight.

Which is weird because G3 Pinkie Pie was supposed to be the party planner. Instead, she became more of the de facto leader of the ponies (a role I enjoyed seeing her in).
>>
>>25340443
Wasn't G3 Pinkie Pie also more of a Twilight-style everypony?

In a way. She had some quirks, PINK PINK O GOD I LOVE PINK being one of them, "Pinkie Squinks" being another. Regardless, she's my favorite G3 character.

Actually, a lot of previous gen "leaders" suffered the bland flawlessness treatment. Starlight, the leader of the 7 Pony Friends in My Little Pony Tales, was probably the blandest of the group. I haven't seen much of G1, but Megan always appeared to be near flawless.
