Okay, "realistic" probaby isn't the right word for what I am trying to say. I think less stereotyped and more believable is more along the lines of what I am trying to say.
It just sort of killed my suspension of disbelief, probably because I know about the special Education system.
Like imagine if you were reading a story that took place in a plane and you know a lot about planes. If the author goes out of the way to identify the type of plane but gets the number of engines the plane has wrong and bases an important plot point around that fact, it takes you out of the story, even if the rest of the story is really good (which this one is by the way).
