Judging by the reactions, Apple Bloom and Scootaloo definitely follow the popular music scene if they're so familiar with Sapphire Shores and Countess Coloratura's works. Even Sweetie Belle seemed a bit more acquainted with the latter; perhaps her friends saw to some remedial musical education after that little adventure to Canterlot. But they're probably not the only acts in Equestria, either. That is, there must be some middle ground between them and the Pony Tones. Quite a few ponies love to sing and dance, and it's not far from there to organizing a production of it.
That goes back generations, too - Granny Smith would have known a much different scene in her youth. Maybe she has some old records in storage, even?
