The more I think about it the more I realize that the problem was the plot itself .
You had to focus on to many things. You had to focus on Twilight experiencing AJ's retarded shit so the audience understands why AJ never had time.
But you also had to focus Applejack because this was supposed to be an Applejack episode.
The plot just doesn't work as an AJ episode. If you removed all the spa scenes nothing would have changed because AJ wasn't needed to understand why she never had time.
I mean even if you had this as a two prater in the same way as Just for Sidekicks and Games Ponies Play were you'd miss the entire point. And while Twilight doing various stupid rituals could have work as a standalone episode AJ and Rarity's spa adventure would have been way to hard to stretch over 22 minutes. There's only so many things you can do at the Spa unless you had the entire episode centered about AJ fixing everything possible in the spa. Even if you added the Dash sneaking around subplot it could only add so many scenes before it became a stale joke.
This wouldn't have worked in any possible way.

Like, the start was okay, but by the 10 minute mark they should have introduced the conflict... and there just was no conflict. Even when they got back to the farm, there felt like there was no real conflict.

The start had me thinking they were going to repeat Applejack's first centered episode, about working too hard and not receiving help, then it went in a totally different and better direction with her working not being a problem, but an asset by working smarter.
Then they tied friendship into it because friends DO offer an outside perspective.
It's about the most practical, clever, and absolutely gender neutral lesson done in a good way with nice pacing I've ever seen on the show. This is a Lauren tier episode. It would've fit right in the first two seasons.

The spa is essential, it STARTS in the spa, and the problem was AJ not having time for the spa, so they go and see why AJ does not have enough time, so they MAKE time, and then run into a similar problem, except AJ fixes it. They go back to find that AJ also needed help and her friends fixed it.
It was pretty seamless, Twilight was only there to show in a more ridiculous and obvious way the same thing Applejack did at the Spa, being an outsider with a fresh perspective

The begging scene with the spa establishes only one thing, that AJ doesn't have free time. It's necessary because it give Rarity and Twilight a reason to go help Applejack.
That isn't the problem.
The problem is the rest of the spa scenes. It's a nice parallel to AJ's problem but it's completely unneeded, drags too much, and is boring scene that could easily be shortened.
Also the thing is that the entire problem could have been solved way faster if they had seen from the start that AJ's rituals are inefficient and she doesn't realize that. They then just told her okay AJ most of those things aren't necessary and AJ agreed instantly. She didn't need the spa scene to see that.
The spa scene could have been completely replaced with Twilight just doing more silly stuff and thus be more entertaining but the episode needed to be about AJ.
The set up of the episode is good. Twilight being used to let the viewer see why Applejack doesn't have free time is great. The way they solve that problem at the end and the moral of the episode is also great.
Everything else though? Not as much.
Compare it with Applebuck season.
Again the set up is perfect. Big Mac is injured, AJ is overworking herself to a ridiculous degree BUT is too stubborn to accept help and understand she can't do everything alone. Twilight offers the solution early in the episode but AJ's stubbornness is what prevents the conflict from being solved instantly. The entire episode is just one single plot. Simple ,well done, good pacing.
That's not the case here and while all the good elements are there the way they are tied together is a mess.

The plot was fine, it was just written like shit.
They wasted half their run time on the spa scenes that only had like two jokes total and could have been compressed down to like 30% without losing anything. Most of the jokes were too straightforward and just not that funny, all the stuff with Dash in particular.
AJ was just too retarded. The idea was fine, but there's a threshhold at which suspension of disbelief fails and her complete incompetence at the only thing she has ever supposed to have been good at was way over it.
The basis of the episode is fine. The moral works and even fits AJ quite well. The parallel sideplots of Twilight trying to follow AJs list while AJ fixes the spa ciuld have been great if they had actually done it, but instead they just kind of didn't and did nothing instead.
It just feels like an episode made of scraps of ideas that haven't actually been developed into something good yet.

Eh, just watched the episode; it was harmlessly forgettable.
I agree it felt like a S1 episode where it took a single fairly basic social lesson and walked through it in as simple way as possible while using humor to keep the audience engaged. Some of the jokes worked, other didn't but they didn't fall completely flat or become cringe.

Things they could of done better: First Reduce down the spa time, there was a lot of needless filler here and jokes that were setup but didn't go any where (Like AJ follows a pipe through the whole building: where were all the background jokes? and the laws of comedy dictate the piping leads back to the room next to the steam room). Also It would have been better if as soon as AJ started her 'I can't believe they got so stuck in their ways' speech Twilight turns up to check on them. AJ asks if she go through the pigs and Twilight off offhandedly remarks she did that in ten minutes and has been pottering around doing other stuff on the farm for the passed hour. She then goes on a rant about how she took some time to streamline her lists workflow and recommend she hire a system annalist or something as she wasting a lot of time. Mean-while unnoticed by Twilight in preach mode, Applejack has done a wild take and ran off screaming about what Twilight has done to her farm. As a swerve to expectation it turns out the Goddess of Freindship can handle a little manual labor without fucking up and we have AJ struggling to comprehend that she may have been overworking for no reason, Twilight offers to look over her work processes to help her cut time and things play out like they do already.
Because a lot of wasted time has been cut from the episode (Oh the Irony) it now leaves time for a scene with Rainbow Dash of AJ passing on her lesson that Rainbow has got stuck in this rut of having to go through this ritual of pretend she doesn't like the spa even when she does and no one judges her for it.

then who knows, the pump broke, there was a leak, there was a problem, it's irrelevant, and because of that Applejack had to do it one pipe at a time. And it took so long to fix it because who knows they had other problems at the farm, who the fuck cares, the point is that it has become a reflex. She did it without realizing, she did it without thinking.

Well, after the entire pig thing when Twilight and Rarity pointed out that she doesn't need to do something inefficiently anymore Applejack understood that some of the things she was doing were inefficient. She learned her lesson.
My question is this. After learning her lesson, after understanding the problem and now that she was thinking about what she was doing why did she need Rarity and Twilight to show her what she was doing wrong? Why didn't she think on her own?
I mean fuck, okay she, was doing it so long that it went beyond being a reflex, that she forgot how to do it right. But she knew at one time that all she had to do was open all the pipes at the same time so she should have figured it out on her own this, without having Twilight and Rarity show it to her.
Unless of course the original supposition was wrong and she never did know that which makes the situation no longer related to the lesson she just learned.
And in that case you have the issue that Rarity and Twilight were better at farm work than AJ.
