Are we sure that Mecha Collections VF-171 is the only VF-171 model we're getting from Delta?

>>
>>14435849
Shame. Even more of a shame that I need to convert it.
>>
>>14435744

I'm pretty sure they won't be the only model, though it might take a while before we get anything else.

First of all, Hasegawa will get around to it, eventually. There's too many official schemes for the thing floating around for them not to, it's just a matter of time - since Hasegawa only really makes one new Macross kit per year, or thereabouts. They might up the pace a bit with the Macross Modelers thing, but don't expect miracles.

Bandai...might or might not make a transformable VF-171 kit. Basically, they didn't even try making grunt VFs in the 1/72 model kit lineup for Frontier before the project was discontinued; when they eventually did make them for the DX Chogokin toyline, they sold like hotcakes, but at that point the 1/72 kit line was two years dead.

Now, they know people are interested enough in grunt VFs to buy the ridiculously expensive DX toys, therefore they'll probably be even more interested in buying the more reasonably priced 1/72 kits. And as I said for Hasegawa, there's room for more than one release of the 171, because I've spotted I think three separate schemes for it in Delta alone, plus the ones that show up in Frontier and Mac-30.

Also, I think Bandai might test the waters at some point with a VF-25A kit, because that is literally only a color swap of the VF-25G with the gun from the other kits, and the only engineering they'd need to pay for is a new decal sheet with more numbers suitable for grunts.
>>
So Kawamori announced something at Anime Expo?

http://www.project-the-next.com/message.html
>>
>>14435987
What is the standard price of Chogokin anyway? I've seen them for about $175 on Amiami, and on Amazon for anywhere from $200-$500.
>>
>>14436014

The toys were marketed with an MSRP of between 14,000 and 20,000 yen depending on which one, with the VF-25 and VF-171 versions being on the cheap end, the VF-27 and YF-29 somewhere in the middle, and the YF-30 and the Renewal Super VF-27 (the only one that retailed with Super parts IIRC, all the others had the super parts sold separately) at 20,000 yen.

The thing is though that they are all limited edition - they only make small-ish batches of around a thousand at a time, and if you miss them then you're stuck buying them second hand at huge markups due to being them collectibles.

Also, make note that there are two versions of the VF-25 and VF-27 toys out there, and at least in the case of the VF-25, the first version isn't worth the asking price. Any asking price, if I've understood the complaints right.

>>
>>14436145

That's the VF-171, IIRC. The original VF-25 toys didn't (just) have quality control issues, they had outright design flaws, like using plastic pegs for load bearing parts. Anymoon.com has a comprehensive review of both versions that point out the differences, and it's quite illuminating. The DX toys really didn't start to become good until the YF-29 toy.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these things, as they're way out of my price range. Being a certified /a/utist and /m/echaphile, I've spent way too much time looking at reviews and shit though...

The holograms in Macross are so advanced that even in Frontier Sheryl was able to hold concerts where she was basically fucking herself. And that was 8 years ago. If they wanted to they could have 50 Mikumos gyrating independently on the deck of the Elysion.

Tried that before, didn't work very well. After umpteen tries when it just wouldn't recognize the kanji despite a really high rez scan, I decided screw it, I have a slate with a pen and I can damn well write them in by hand. It still takes google a few tries before it recognizes some of the characters, though.

Anyway, the stat blocks are basically all translated at this point, but that was the easy part. The descriptive blurbs will be more difficult, there's a crapload more text... but I'm starting to recognize certain kanji as I go, and I'm basically copy-pasting every kanji I get right into a notepad so I can paste it back instead of having to write it again, which speeds things up a bit

It doesn't have to. SR-71 proved that if you can fly or accelerate fast enough, you don't have to dodge. Sure, even Quarter is a big target but it carries greater firepower and even AA destroids will be dangerous for mobile suit en masse.

>>
Macross noob here. What's the difference between the VF and YF designations?
>>
>>14438910
VF- Production version.
YF- Prototype
>>
>>14438910

YF means it's a prototype. VF is the designation for mass-produced models.
>>
>>14438910

A YF indicates a prototype, like the YF-19 and YF-21 in Marcross Plus. A VF designation indicates a production version, though it might be limited in production or customised heavily. So the production versions of much the same machines as Plus are called the VF-19 and VF-22 in Marcross 7. The production versions are better too, since the kinks are worked out and performance increased due to the years between allowing more testing and better materials and so on.
>>
>>14438910

VF is the general designation of a Variable Fighter model.

YF is reserved for prototypes units, which often are not exactly what enters production. This is a term that is actually taken from certain real life contracts.

So the test unit for the 19 model plane was the YF-19, but the version that was actually produced and sold was the VF-19. If there was a redesign during the development process, you might even end up with a YF-19 and a YF-19B and so on, but the end result is still the VF-19.

>>14438939
>>14438947
Thanks guys. They must have done a shitload of tweaking to allow normal pilots to use the pilot killer that was the YF-19 though.
>>
>>14438992

They also didn't mass produce it much. After the YF-19 penetrated Earth's global defense net, Earth decided not to let any of the offworld colonies have access to it. Even decades later, by the time of Delta, you don't see 19s in colony hands even though VF-25 and later generations outdo it in basically every aspect.

Though, it is worth noting that the later generation VFs are no longer UN spacey produced. They are made by PMCs like the SMS and Xaos. So it may very well be that the actual UN spacey forces still have not caught up to the 19 yet, and small numbers of late generation VFs under the control of independent contractors handle the situations that require heavier machines.
>>
>>14439048
>After the YF-19 penetrated Earth's global defense net
They really should've improved on that, the fact that Isamu solo'd it alone thought just speaks about his skill
>>
>>14438992
Yeah, they made changes.

http://www.macross2.net/m3/macross7/vf-19f.htm
>The fighter form of the YF-19 boasted astounding maneuverability performance but had a fatal decrease in maneuverability control. The VF-19 aimed to improve the balance by reworking the fuselage structure, but the VF-19 Custom daringly maintains high maneuverability by following the original YF-19 concept. Other differences from the YF-19 prototype can be found in both "F-type" and "S-type" Excaliburs, such as replaced engines with more stable output and a simplified airframe body. These changes found in the VF-19 Excalibur create a comprehensive performance that not only allow average pilots to control the craft but also exceed the prototype unit.

>>14439048
>Earth decided not to let any of the offworld colonies have access to it.
But we do see colony worlds and UN planetary bases with Excaliburs. The Macross 7 fleet had a couple, and the Zolan forces had one.
>>
>>14439048

There's at least one VF-19 on Zola in Dynamite 7, which is worse than the production model ones Emerald Force use in 7 TV according to it's stats.

The NUNs forces also still use VF-171EXs by Delta. They're only a colonial arm on a world far, far from Earth though. It's in a satellite cluster to our galaxy it's so far out really. Closer or more important worlds probably use better stuff like a VF-28 or one of the other unused destinations.

>>14439123

I wish people would stop saying he solo'd the defense net or using it as an example of his skill given that he not only didn't he solo it, he didn't even try. He literally turned off all power and hoped he wouldn't be detected because the defence net was too busy with all the other ships. He said himself it would be purely down to luck, though he thought of that as another skill of his.

>>14439144

Basara's Fire Custom actually exceeds the prototype in all aspects, at least statistically. And considering it apparently has the same fuselage issues, it's probably at least as difficult to control.

Zola has monkey models VF-19s though, yea.
>>
>>14438459
Clever
>>
The VF-19 was actually nerfed repeatedly, not really because the Earth government was worried about it, but because it was such a handful to fly. And the first-generation production machines were so expensive a lot of buyers went "fuck it, we'll wait", until the VF-19F and S came out. Which were still expensive, but at least flyable by a slightly above average fighter pilot.

The VF-19P is nerfed further still because it's sold to civilian agencies, who don't need the performance.

The thing is though that all versions of the VF-19 still retain the airframe toughness necessary to handle the YF-19's performance - which is part of why they're still expensive even dumbed down - and if you're willing to spend the money, you can bring even the monkey models up to performance rivalling or exceeding the YF-19. And with modern technology such as the Inertial Storage Converter which was still in its infancy during Project Super Nova, you can actually make a VF-19 model that's superior in every way to the YF-19 and still flyable without being Isamu Dyson.

Which is exactly what happens in Macross The Ride, where several of the competitors in the Vanquish races fly updated versions of the VF-19 that were developed by their home fleets, rather than Shinsei's HQ on Earth. Other people take those same technologies and apply them to older airframes, including the VF-11, VF-1, VF-0 and Sv-51 - can't check right now because my lap is full of cat, but IIRC the VF-0 version in M:tR has VF-19 engines...
>>
>>14439685
VF-19F/S have higher engine output than that YF-19 and simplified airframe for easier control. They are capable of more consistent and faster performance than the YF-19. They don't have to be modified for greater performance, they already are better.
>>
>>14439704

They're faster, but the first generation VF-19s had way more maneuverability. It was just that the edge of the envelope was kind of razor sharp, one second it's still under control, and the next it's completely out of it, and unless you're Isamu Dyson or Max Jenius with the reflexes of a rattlesnake and instinctive understanding of exactly what to do, you're not getting control back in time to save the plane.

The monkey-models can be modded back to that level of maneuverability by applying improved tech that wasn't available at the time the YF-19 was built - such as the ISC and more advanced computer control that's been developed in the almost 20 years since the YF-19.

The VF-19F/S were retooled from the VF-19EF which was the export monkey model.
>>
>>14440336

The monkey model thing for the VF-19 confuses me a bit. The VF-19EF is the monkey model, but is the VF-19E a monkey model too? It's listed on the Macross Compendium as an SMS unit, but it doesn't make it clear if that's a monkey model too, or if the monkey model was just created from the VF-19E. I see a VF-19 Advance listed there too, which just adds more confusion, since I've no idea what unit that is and I don't see it there itself. Is that the one Isamu flew in Macross Frontier: The Wings of Goodbye?

t/n: Only have the Macross Quarter and its component ships left to do stat blocks for, and I don't like the assumptions the book author made for those ships as they match the DX toy and anime shooting model very poorly.

Then again, so do some of these, as the Battle Frontier (which is the one in the picture that goes with the "Second phase type") has twelve twins and 4 triple "Induction Convergent beam Guns", plus a couple of twin guns that the book doesn't mention on the shooting model.

Also, the main gun of the Battle Frontier is a different type from the guns on all the other New Macross-type ships we see, including the Battle Galaxy, going by the anime footage.

Delta's girls are inoffensive. They aren't unlikable (except Makina and Rei because their voices are a little grating) but it kind of takes away from the drama because there's no reason to really want one over the other, it's just waifu vs waifu and whichever design panders to you more is your waifu. Personally I think this detracts from the usual dynamic but it also makes discussion a lot simpler. Nobody gets into shitfits about waifus, so we can just quickly discuss and just as quickly move on to talking about VFs and the story.

It's not make up. She had an interest on joining Walkure when Arad scouted her for Delta. She is infatuated with Minmay and admires her aunt Mylenne. All those envious looks she gives to Freyja isn't for Hayate, it's because she's living her dream while she's stuck doing what she considers "her duty."

>Decided future designs would keep that in mind and try to address it
>20 yrds old, new pitch for a series Genocidist(?) which featured gerwalk-style designs was rejected
>Had an overnight meeting with his friends and they brainstormed what would become Macross (Giant enemies, transforming battleship, town inside a carrier)
>Justification for giant robots was to have giant enemies
>Wanted to focus on "Vitality of a private citizen," an individual that aspired to be a singer, thus creating Lynn Minmay
>Kawamori and Mikimoto studied mechanical engineering in college
>Would have meetings in classrooms but would frequentely get kicked out

He's just a hardcore perfectionist who isn't afraid to result to insults to get the job done.

>Shit talking the Gonzo CGI team during Blassreiter's production to get them to do a better job.

He's not even afraid to call out old friends for some dopey stuff. Like the "Michael sniping from an asteroid" thing in Macross F.

Designing VF-1

>Wanted a design that was less toy-like and more military
>Trying to figure out how to make it transform without looking silly
>Toymakers told him "airplanes do not sell"
>Thought to himself that if something won't sell, it has a big chance. He wanted to be the one who wanted to show it can be done.
>studied airplanes and plastic models (F-14)
>noticed that there was enough space between the engines for arms to fold in between the gap
>Next day designed first draft, had really stocky proportions
>Next attempt had an issue where you could still see the arms folded in place from the top of the plane form
>Next revision became what is now the VF-1
>had a mock-up made and showed it to the toy company and exactly how it could transform
>Executives that once shot him down gave him the go ahead
>Began working on Macross storyline

War Without Weapons

>Wanted to distance Macross from Star Wars and other Sci-Fi pieces at the time
>Came up with idea of Zentradi, who had no culture, and the singer Minmay
>ideas came together as the idea of culture shock
>Staff was not confident in the idea but as a lead member of the team, Kawamori went through with the idea
>went to create the episode "Love Flows" (Episode 27 of SDF)

TV -> Movie

>Wanted to get away from trend of movies being recut compiliations of TV shows
>New ideas like the Minmay hologram concert (pointed out funny how it is now becoming a reality)
>At this point, he is 23 yrs old and in his 3rd year of college, decides to drop out for his career
>Afterwards takes a 10 year break from Macross

You guys think they'll release a model of the SV-154 soon? Would want to give it Bundes-Luftwaffe decals, really.

Brief mention of Macross 7 (Worried about time left before we get kicked out)

Macross Plus
>Researched by trying to pilot at Air Combat USA in Anaheim
>Itano also piloted a plane
>Dogfight in Plus is based on their experiences flying against each other
>Staff was hesistant about the inclusion of AI / Virtual Idols

Macross Zero
>Beginning of use of computer graphics for design
>Genesis of Aquarion is when the studio became more confident in using CG for humanoid mecha

Macross Frontier
>The prison Sheryl is held in in Wings of Goodbye is based on Alcatraz from when Kawamori visited San Francisco

Macross Delta

>Hope fans enjoy the rest of Delta

I just realized that the other detachable carrier on the Elysion is another reference to something Greek; in this case, one of the Primordial deities of the Greek pantheon.

>>14442065
It's an Ace Combat Zero joke; it's the epitaph of one of the enemy aces in the game.
Would be scary if that was really the case tho.

The team is Hayate-Freyja. The original set up for Delta was singer-pilot pair in a school club.
>>
I like the Elysion's design so much more than Quarter. I find Quarter to be not really eye-pleasing for some reason.
>>
>>14442189
Maybe it's the split-up hull design that Quarter had? She does look like a man lying down.

>>14442193
Yeah, it does look like it was designed with the humanoid mode first and ship second.
>>
>>14441499
To be fair, they got it. I love the Z-plus series.

>>
After the Macross fan event, Mirage needs Freyja to die to be a rebound after a mourning process. Every VA affirms that Freyja is the most important person to Hayate and needs her to basically function.
>>
>>14442294
It was a club of pilots buffed by their singing partners and, if you interpret and read between the lines Kawamori's statement, he wanted to try to eliminate one of the classic Macross elements (mecha, music/pop idols, and love triangle) but the sponsors didn't let him. If it already had idols and his planes, which element do you think he would have axed on a show that was supposed to be about the bond of two people: a pilot and a singer who buffed him? The love triangle.

Now look at Mirage's 'development' until now and understand a little of how much she's forced on the show.

Let's be objective then.
Freyja: First girl, main heroine, the focus of all character development and the one Hayate "needs" the "Most."
Mirage: Senseizoned literal who.
>>
>>14440814

Thanks! Google Translate can only do so much, and I'm still not used to all its features yet.

>>14440824

No, it's completely unofficial, and lower on the totem pole than the Master File books. The thing is though that Macross is a big verse, and the variants from the book are completely plausible...well, most of them.
>>
>>14441482
>>14441494

I actually thought it was a doujin design myself as I was doing the translation, I didn't know it was in one of the games. I recognized the Daedalus II because it's been posted before (Macross Mecha Manual has an article on it), but the "Kaga" (like "Osaka", the class name is in quotes in the book itself because it's unofficial - the others aren't in quotes because they're not) I didn't recognize at all.

Isn't Nothung/EF pinnacle of Excalibur development anyway?
>>
>>14442806
The pinnacle is probably the EF or the ADVANCE.

But considering that the ADVANCE was pretty much made by Neuman to give Isamu a proper VF-19 under the guise of extending the VF-19's service life, I got my doubts on whether its the best.

Doesn't the Macross 7 fleet use an unknown design which was based on the VF-19 for their grunts later? Could that be the pinnacle of the 19?
>>
>>14439685
Ugh. Vf-0 in Ride came with Messiah engines.
>>14441194
Isn't it more like, what was it's name, amphibious assault ship?
>>14442823
The Ride and Frontier's cameo are chronologically last appearance of VF-19 in cannon, so whatever really. And most of late models are specialized anyway, so saying that any one of them is THE definite version is also impossible by definition.
Nothung is especially build for superior maneuverability and it is described as VERY hard to fly, EF/A, Isamu's custom is probably just as finicky, while both planes are pretty much one off builds.
