Have fun with it; FMW is a great series. The guys at Sanbondo definitely put a lot of love into these games, and it paid off.
I'd advise starting with Reimu (her route makes a better introduction to the series with regard to both gameplay and story), but since you have to play the first game with both protagonists anyway, I'd recommend picking your Marisa playthrough to carry over to the later games. Her route splits tend to be the more interesting of the two.

I think they're very rare but "Hitomi's Pendant" (Escaflowne reference) gives you SP Regen as a skill.
There's an item whose name translates to something like "Man-Made Aura Barrier" which gives a unit a barrier that's based off their Aura Power level (from Dunbine) but it also affects skills that are renamed variants of it, so units like Gurren Lagann can also benefit from it (because Spiral Power is a renamed AP).
