spoiler: yeah, I still like and watch PR. Dino Charge is pretty good (Yoshi Sudarso is based), looking forward to the game show adaptation of Ninninger too, sounds super hot. There are some series that are basically the same like Shinkenger and Samurai, but Go-Onger and RPM are hugely different, it's actually kind of amazing that they got RPM out of Go-Onger. I think if you can get over the immense cheesiness of PR and haven't watched it since MMPR, it's worth picking up again.

It may seem like it is but it isn't.
The major difference between an average episode of Rider or Sentai and an average episode of Precure is that stories in Precure usually have sweet fuckall to do with the action part. It's like two different shows. First it's a slice of life for really little girls, then suddenly a bad guy shows up and shit's on. Sometimes they'll use the guest character as the power battery for their evil plans (because Sailor Moon did this, essentially), but not always.
Look at this week's Zyuohger. Everything that was happening was tied into the storyline, both for this week and at large. Look at... I actually don't follow Maho week-to-week, but pick one after they returned from magic school (again Precure seems like it'd have the wherewithal to integrate the setting into the stories but fuck that I guess). In fact I bet if Bandai could get rid of the superhero part without sabotaging the brand they would, the idea of a fighting superheroine was just too good to last.
So screw every single last of you who tells people to watch Precure when somebody asks for more heroines (impossible as it is). That no pump-a-rum.

Tusk really isn't the problem. A stiff actor is not a death sentence if they're playing a stiff, awkward,autisticcharacter. Unfortunately, Arakawa's two episodes thus far (Ghost crossover and the dream episode) weren't as strong as the other episodes by Komura. Tusk's focus episode last week had a cute moment or two, but it wasn't a necessarily promising debut for new toku screenwriter Jin Tanaka either. Both Arakawa's and Tanaka need to step it up if they're going keep up with the bar Komura has set.

I like to consider Rio and Mele to be the Tristan and Isolt of Sentai. Only big downside is that the show could use a better translation (which won't happen any time soon), though at least the video quality is fine.

Slightly ot but I feel like Ninninger could have been a fantastic comedy season if it didn't keep trying to take itself seriously. If you introduced Ariake no Kata earlier and gave Kinji less "me family dead" angst and let him just be Shinken Brown-- uh, Starninger, it really could have been great. Yakumo and Takaharu had great potential for hilarity, they just tried to push a serious rival plot instead. It seemed like they only figured out Takaharu and his brainlessness was best as the butt of jokes instead of a hero 2/3rds of the way through the show. It's really a shame.
As for other comedic sentai... Go-Onger's the only other straight comedy sentai I've watched and that went full retard with the anime jokes. The cars didn't help. It's that difficult middle ground that made Carranger good, it had that self-referential self-depreciation and the lack of any real danger that made such shitty heroes funny instead of annoyingly incompetent.

There's some decent comedy in anime like Slayers. I mean, it's still kind of heavy-handed and often even slapstick-y, but it's actually funny a lot of the time, so it's not like there are no funny Japanese shows.
I also laughed pretty hard at Rodan and Godzilla both laughing their asses off when Mothra webbed the other one in Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster.
So it's not like Japan can't do humor. It's that Toei isn't funny.

Takegami mainly writes anime, unlike Urasawa's more well-rounded resume, so the quality gap is obvious (much like an aging Arakawa and his own pupil Komura). As for Shimoyama, the execs didn't let him do anything too drastic (much like how KR Ghost was for a while).

Japanese have no problem with humor, it's just that culturally they're humor is different than ours. Sentai's problem is that the humor they put in the show these days is usually bottom of the barrel dumb because it's a children's show for baby children. They don't need to write smart humor for adolescent kids that only want to see the badguy go kablooie.
