Wow, I've just realized the Shinkenger's disc gimmick was based off of Musashi's Book of Five Rings.

Anyone here seen Sun Vulcan? I'm pretty new to sentai (up to date with Ninninger, seen Gekiranger, Carranger and Gokaiger and about to start ToQger) and I wanted to watch an older one next (I was going to start with Battle Fever J but I can't find subs anywhere), is it good?

It's a sequel to the Sentai before it called Denziman. It's a pretty goofy series, back in the days when Marvel helped Toei make shows. Sentai have mechs because a Japanese version of Spiderman had one.

The top tier 11 are Changeman,Flashman,Maskman,Liveman,Zyuranger,Dairanger,GogoV,Timeranger, Dekaranger, Gekiranger and Shinkenger.
Though if you're asking what /ssg/ likes most I'd take Zyuranger, Dairanger and Go-Busters out since everyone hates those here. Carranger and Hurricanger should definitely be there.

The Kakuranger series has a few monsters that got repainted for random background youkai creatures.

Liveman was the first sentai I watched when I decided to go back in tokusatsu 3 years ago, and now that our dear GUIS is going to finish their V2 soon I decided to finally watch it again. Currently on episode 20 and it's still definitly my favourite sentai.

It had elements of that, yes. Maskman was the first mystical sentai and their powers were centered around meditation and control of spiritual forces. It gave the show a pretty nice tone at times.

I've watched the first half of the series and liked it quite a bit.
As far as I know there's no subs. Not even sure about raws.
The dub's mixed bag. Their Brits trying to sound kung fu movie sorta. It comes out a little heavy on the ching chow, but it's got some really great line reads and a pretty sharp sense of humor.
It doesn't try to hide Taoism or Buddhism or heaven or hell or anything.

I like the molded mouths like on Zyuranger or Carranger the most because I grew up on Power Rangers. Also a fan of the mouth plates like Mega or Deka. Though I'm not a fan when the mouth piece is the entire bottom half like on the old Google V or Denjiman helmets. But I will say the Magiranger helmets are still some of the best overall.
