Also what should I read after this? Do I go to short stories or start with the trial?

Both are great, but I would recommend The Trial. Translation will probably be shit though as Kafka writes as German as can be.

His short stories are great, I'm working my way through them now but I would recommend The Trial first. Then you can either go to his short stories (Judgement, In The Penal Colony, Description of a Struggle and The Hunger Artist are my favourites) or to The Castle, his masterpiece imo

eww bugs gross
>>
His turning into a bug is a representation of how he is viewed by his family and his peers, just a means to their ends. When Gregor reveals to his co-worker that he's a bug, he reveals his primary concern to maintain his job to continue to support his family.
At first you see that he is happy to give for his family, and his family is happy to receive. But, as soon as he transforms, his family reveals their true feelings for him, that he really is nothing but the money he gives them. When the money is stripped away, his family has nothing but disgust and contempt for them.
In the end, the mother and father, after killing Gregor, look at his sister and desire to do the same thing by thinking that she could marry a rich man.

He's basically saying that the people who might seem the most secure in your life, the ones who are supposed to love you, the ones who are supposed to care for you, are not necessarily looking for your best interests, and when your intrinsic value is called to question, you might just find yourself all alone.
