>we live in the age of a device that contains all of humanity's knowledge easily accessible
>the smartest people of our time are those who read archaic books instead

Greatest irony of our time?
>>
Greatest ironing of all time is that we are damned if we do and damned if we dont

Those devices also enable a constant stream of useless information, all encouraging quickly moving your focus in an adhd manner to satisfy an insatiable maw of distraction and escapism.

Ancients didnt have this. They could sit and think for years and were fine with it, their brains weren't fried. Their thoughts were much deeper than modern man's, unless he has escaped the trap.

Children today are constantly on phones, tablets, and vidya and i fear for their future well-being.

Don't think so. Show me something better than The Iliad.

Also, remember: "Want to stay up to date? Read the classics."

I suffer from this too. I'm always shifting attention from one source of information to another, incessantly looking for new content to fill my boredom.

How do I fix this problem?

Remove your distractions. I broke my computer and since then my life has felt clearer and less jumbled. I stopped playing vidya and watching porn or masturbating.

With that I've also sat down to read frequently. Read as much as you can before you get sick of reading. Find texts you enjoy enough that you hunger to read even when doing other things. Dont read lazily. Seek books where you do not immediately understand everything you read in it, and dont move on until you feel you have grasped what a line or passage. This seems to excersize my mind and makes me feel so much more calm through the day.

Alternatively or additionally learn basic meditation.

Learn to appreciate little things. Sit outside for 20 minutes just enjoying solitude, maybe a drink and music.

I would get rid of my phone but the dictionary apps are way too useful while reading. I hate being at the beck and call of others though. I want to be unavailable, but the e worst part is that I've conditioned myself to respond promptly by periodically checking it in small intervals.

I would like to buy a cheap watch eventually and start leaving it at home more often.

It's because reading utilizes the many functions if a brain. Memory, comprehension, abstraction, logic, contemplation, etc. One commonly held notion is that you don't need a memory in the age of information, and I have to agree with people like Harold Bloom and Peter Hitchens who talk of furnishing your mind with beauty. Beautiful words, phrases, poetry and prose. I watched a clip of Boris Johnson reciting the illiad in Homeric Greek. He went on and on for at least 3-4 minutes and I was amazed not only by his memory but also by his delivery. Harold Bloom can recite paradise lost in huge chunks as well.

The memory of a computer only implies storage. Human memory is storage, but to effectively store information you need to also experience it and comprehend it. It's implies a deep relationship with the memorized text.

Became a philosopher?
Been doing that my whole life, there's no cure. You'll learn a lot about the world, people will understand you less and less. At the same time you'll consider them stupider and stupider as every day passes and you'll eventually realize there's nothing you can do to save them from their self inflicted bliss.

This too.

When my main PC's monitor broke several years ago was the day I started reading non-stop.

Also, Methylphenidate.

second statement is not true though
apparently reading archaic books makes you come out with bollocks like >>8231344 or >>8231512 and think it is meaningful
>>
Greatest irony of our time is that I have two personalities: nicest person you'll ever meet and twisted fucking psychopath.

This is such an edgy anti-humanist view. Can you not grip how dull and mindless the average person was in the time of Hobbes compared to the average person now? We're much better and much more progressive. It will take a long time before we live in a society where only imperative knowledge exists, if that's even possible

Nah.

Or maybe the ancients were rare exceptions and everyone here are glorified peasants which is why a fucking nobody is not the next plato you reactionary retard
