What do you do before deciding a new book to read? What considerations do you make with regard to notoriety, author, setting etc?

I'm pretty open-minded, I'll read anything as long as it's written by a white man and isn't genre fiction

i just go through various /lit/ charts i have saved lmao

Usually get it into my head that "I am going to read this book because of...". Also helps with not quitting for another book.

I go through my to-read list and just pick what I'm in the mood for.

this, although I don't mind reading apolitical female authors. then i just kinda pick what seems most interesting to me based on the movement/theme/subject. i end up reading a lot of works from the 1800s. i try to avoid books that give off a "working class" vibe.

also i try to read 2 or 3 books at a time. having a work of fiction, a work of non-fiction, and a short story or poetry collection to switch between really helps prevent me from burning out.

I mostly read non-fiction on Roman and Greek civilizations, ss each book is full of references to other books.
