The cruelest irony of all is that Marxism, too, essentially takes the view that culture is rapidly degenerating in proportion to the globalization of capitalism and the institutionalization of multiculturalism, both of which are rightly abhorred by the so-called alt-right. A proper Marxism must always also be reactionary, for it bemoans the persistent slippage into the past of political literacy and revolutionary potential. What the alt-right calls "cultural Marxism," Marxism calls an ideological strategy of containment, the false appeasement of minoritarian labor power to ensure the latter' perpetual incorporation into capitalist production—the accumulation of capital literalized at the level of culture, a spectral mimesis whereby the expansion of slavery is recoded as the expansion of "rights."

Thus, though they forecast radically different ideas of what should come next, traditional monarchy on the one hand, communism on the other, the alt-right and Marxism might for the time being make good bedfellows, sharing a common vision of the destruction of the capitalist mode of production.

yes

>A proper Marxism must always also be reactionary
no. You don't know what reactionary means

there is such a thing as a "revolutionary nostalgia." the idea, in a perhaps recklessly vulgar form, is one step backward, two leaps into the future, bringing with them the variously more revolutionary ideologies that existed around the turn of the 20th century. we see this kind of nostalgia again and again in Marxist theory—Lukasc is a prominent example, as is Benjamin.

Wrong
The only reason a Marxist would want the alt-right to win out would be to get the workers so pissed off at Trump's horseshit that they begin the revolution
>>

there is already a revolutionary energy latent to this alt-right which the Left (and I mean the real, revolutionary left that does not even have a face in this country) could potentially redirect.

Who can read Marcuse's comments on the one-dimensional man and not feel his longing for some prior time of "psychological depth"? Who does not hear the ring of the un-reified past in the diagnosis of the "society of spectacle"?

Err, no it doesn't. Marxism takes the view that global capitalism is an inherently progressive force in historical terms. It's the opposite of "degenerating".

the funny thing is that this horseshit is still probably better than most 'political discourse' that goes on

I'm going to agree with this poster. You don't know what reactionary means. It's a specifically socialist term to describe the forces which resist revolution. So Marxists cannot be reactionary. Of course reactionary has a more mundane definition, but if you're going to talk about Marxism, you can't use one of it's buzzwords. It causes confusion.

'the left' has been reduced to imagery and incorporated into consumer culture and the liberal establishment. The Alt-right is a reaction to this perceived cultural establishment, but it's far from a threat to capitalism, in fact it's extremely proprietarian and probably more related to neo feudalism and austrolibertarian philosophies than to fascism.

good use of scare quotes. 'the left' and marxism are very different things.

in fact, the bifurcated meanings draw attention to the aporia I'm trying to pitch upon, and which you anons have pointed out. yes, reactionary usually means right. but it also means radically nostalgic, and in this dual meaning i find the potential for a Marxist "reawakening" of the alt-right proletariat
