Textbooks.

Self help books are not a step by step guide.

Okay, well should I start with mythology by Edith Hamilton? Because that's what I've been reading

Statistically, no. At least in terms of self-help seminars. They tend to fade after a while.

I did enjoy (and still use a few of the practices of)
"How to win friends and influence people"

The only book that matters, the Bible

Holy shit this. It's not technically a self-help book, since it heavily satirizes them, but damn is it good. Walker Percy is criminally underrated.

It's a little more complicated than that. The question is very general.

For some, certain self-help books come at a timely circumstance in their lives.

To think that there can encompass a "whole life" philosophy where self-help books are either all good or all bad is absolutely simplistic.

Again, it's all about timing. The truth is that it really doesn't matter, but beneath that some people need a surrogate parent and reading someone's philosophy that you like can be comforting.

Also, anyone who tells you that, "THIS is the one book that everyone should read," is a zealot.
