anyone else think the "High Water Mark" speech in Fear and Loathing is bullshit?
>>
What speech? Dammit OP I haven't read it yet.
>>
>>8145913
why?
>>
>>8145924
"Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas" etc.

it seems disjointedly floral and pretty for Thompson, and the subject, baby boomer nostalgia, is just gross. the 60s sucked and weren't special, but he's making it out to be the exact opposite, just because he was there

>blanketing an entire decade as shitty
Edgelord over here. Don't pretend to have an opinion as if you lived through the decade fuckface
>>

The whole point of the speech is that in the end it wasn't special at all. The idealism, the counterculture, all of it was a farce that broke against the tide of reality.

this, OP's an idiot.

Nope, I love it. Hunter was a really good writer and the Higher Water Mark speech is fantastic as well.

How old were you in the 60s?
>>
It's his eulogy for a collective halllucination he hoped could replace the dreary reality of the America he had in front of him, against all hope and reason. He hoped the shared consciousness of America could use it as its new Dream as the old one was fading in a shredded dreamcorpse that people kept humping aat six in the morning in a predawn Vegas casino. The 60s were an era of martyrs, of people giving their all to an ideal that failed them - and in the end, they just accepted their fate and cried themselves into a delusional parody of normal life, crippled by acid flashbacks and paranoia, wearing the mask of all-american acceptance. Kind of similar to the Kierkegaardian Knight of Eternal Resignation; HST's gonzo persona tried to counter it, to be the knight of Faith of the American Dream.

>HST
>Beats

This be bait.
>>

Yeah thought about that only after I posted. Have a nice random statement of beat hatred then.

You get it, OP does not.
