Yeah, I've read Brighton Rockand seen both film versions. Pretty good book. Helps if you know a bit about what England was like at the time. There's a bit of Catholic nonsense in the story but it can just be read as a bit of a seedy underworld plot / cynical doomed romance without losing anything.
