It gets shat on a lot for being pretentious and very obviously written while he was an undergrad, but I actually liked it more than Infinite Jest. It was a lot funnier than most of his later stuff when he started writing more self-help like things.
It's fun and funny. You could basically write a biography of the author based on his projections onto the male characters. I think it's a good place to start or end with DFW.

I particularly enjoyed Rick's short stories.
The Antichrist is also pretty cool.
